Way-Station
Above ground, they are low, rough-hewn buildings, usually built directly into the bones of the pass. Narrow points in the pass, whether natural or built by the dwarves.
When hewn or shaped below ground, they are usually a tunnel, and the surrounding mountains are regarded as impassable for anything resembling trade convoys. Individual hunting trails exist in summer and early fall, but are else extremely difficult to traverse.
Purpose / Function
Way-Stations are the guard posts and customs houses that control the passes and roads that pass though the Bronze Crest . The Red Dwarves who operate them regulate everything that passes through, from single travellers to trade convoys.
Architecture
Way Stations tend to be built either into the bones of the mountains themselves, or when built aboveground, the stone is quarried from nearby, usually in such a way to ease defense or approach.
