Laranians (luh-RAY-nee-ens)

Naming Traditions

Family names

Most Laranians follow a simple patronymic pattern in lieu of a true surname. For men, the prefix is P', Pr', or Per', followed by a variant of the father's name. If no father is known, a mother's name is acceptable but generally looked down upon. Sometimes the prefix with the mother's name is bastardized as well (pun only a little intended).   Examples from my FMC's Family:
  • Yanto P'rees (Yanto, son of Reese)
  • Gwion P'yanti (Gwion, son of Yanto)
For women, the consonant is an F, but the prefixes are otherwise the same, taking the father's name. Women don't usually face the same stigma about unknown male parents, so a woman whose patronymic is "daughter of" and the mother's name is less likely to face social pressures than her brother, "son of" a woman's name. This is somewhat due to the preference for male children, and the knowledge that sometimes daughters are not claimed by their fathers for whatever reason.   Examples from my FMC's Family:
  • Cadi F'aughn (Cadi, daughter of Owaen)
  • Ria Fr'eyan (Ria, daughter of Yan[to])

Major organizations

Clan Ilara is the familial origin of the term Laranian. All Laranians are descended from Clan Ilara and from that clan's local friendlies.

Chailara is the kingdom/nation-state that was founded by Clan Ilara's settling in a specific region and claiming the area for themselves. Most Chailarans are Laranian, but not all Laranians are Chailaran.
