Garret Rider

The Lost Werewolf

"I ain't very smart or strong, but I don' need to be. I'm perfectly happy being Garret. "
Garret is a young, homeless teenager afflicted with lycanthropy who lives with Astrid Estelle in her 'home for monsters' in Dusk Valley after she found him in the woods.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Physical Appearance

Garret is a young man with tanned skin covered in freckles. His golden eyes are tired and baggy looking from his poor sleeping habits. He has shaggy brown hair that he rarely brushes, and he has been known to cut his own hair, resulting in it looking rather messy. He is average built though this is after getting some meat on his bones after spending a long time malnourished and thin. He is covered in scars from his werewolf attack, the most prominent one being a bite scar that is still a deep red color.   His werewolf form resembles most of his kind, he is a mix of human and wolf features and he walks on all fours. His front 'paws' still resemble hands and he can still use his opposable thumbs in wolf form. His fur is the same shade of brown as his hair and grows out longer to match his hair length making his fur very fluffy and soft around his neck and chest. His eyes also glow golden yellow in this form.

Apparel

Garret does not own much in the way of clothes, as he has a bad habit of tearing through them when he transforms. His is found simply wearing t-shirts and jeans as they are cheap
and easy and he doesn't have to think about them. He will also wear out clothing long before they have 'died' so to speak. He is often seen wearing a red flannel jacket during colder months.

Special abilities

Garret is a werewolf, meaning every full moon he turns into a half man, half wolf beast. In this form he has canine-like hearing and smell. He is also much stronger and faster and can heal wounds in this form. He has limited control in this form, but his variant of lycanthropy comes with a mutation that allows him to retain the memories of what he has done in wolf form, despite not being fully conscious in it.   Even in human form, his hearing and smell is sharper than most, often to the point that he is sensitive to loud sounds. He also frequently has 'dog moments' where he will subconsciously display a behavior common in dogs or wolves before snapping out out it.

Personal history

Garret was born and raised in a small town, in an even smaller trailer park, smack dab in the middle of Arkansas. Garret is just one of five children his parents Glenn and Suzie-may had, him being the second oldest. With him there was also his older brother Grant, his younger brother Geoff, his little sister Ginnie and his baby brother Gabe. Garret and Geoff were only two years apart, thus were the closest out of all the siblings. Geoff was a timid, fragile kid that relied on his stronger older brother for protection.   Garret was never used to having a lot of money, and his family made do with what they had, even if it meant using cheap, tacky or otherwise bizarre solutions to problems that would otherwise require money. His father was an anti-government conspiracy nut, thus he taught his boys to hunt, fish and survive in the wilderness, often proclaiming that he was gonna take the family 'off the grid' on several occasions. Despite his eccentric father, Garret enjoyed being active and being outside and frequently went out by the lake in the woods with Geoff to fish.

The Attack

Garret's parent's have always had a pretty broken marriage and fought loudly all the time. Glenn was an alcoholic and addicted to pain meds after messing up his knee years ago, which made him lash out at his wife often. The thin walls of the trailer made it overwhelming for the kids, and Garret often snuck out his window and went to the lake when this happened.   One night he did just that, and wandered off to the lake alone as his parents fought. He fished for a little bit and then when he finished up he decided to head home. However on his way back he heard something large creeping in the woods, growling. Soon enough, a large, black wolf creature crept out of the darkness, it's glowing white eyes fixated on Garret. The monster lunged at Garret, chasing him through the forest.   Garret tripped in panic, which allowed the monster to pounce onto him and attack him, biting and scratching. The creature took a nasty bite out of his side, by his hip, before gunshots went off. Bullets fired at the creature scaring it off, the source was Garret's dad, who had heard him screaming and rushed to help him. After running the monster off, his dead scooped up the bloody, shaking boy and rushed him to the hospital.   Garret had sustained significant scratches and bite wounds that had to be patched up, and suffered a week of explainable aches and fevers, but he managed to recover no worse for wear. He was able to continue on normally like it never happened. But then a month later...

The Shift

Garret had started feeling those same aches in his body and feeling sicker than usual for a few days. That night was just another fight from his parents. Garret didn't feel good and wanted out, and decided to head to the lake, despite what happened last time. Worried for his brothers safety, Geoff insisted he go with him 'just in case'.   The two hung out by the lake for a little bit, when Garret felt a sudden surge of pain through his body. Suddenly it was like his bones and organs where writhing around inside of him. Scared and in agonizing pain, screaming for help, Garret transformed into a werewolf right in front of Geoff. Geoff was frozen in shock at what had happened to his brother, and didn't have time to run before the beast that was once Garret, attacked him.   Garret woke up the next morning in the middle of the woods, naked and caked in blood and mud, and more sore than he'd ever felt in his life. Suddenly, violent memories of what had happened that night flashed in his head, and he got sick at the realization of what he did. He mauled his brother to death. He sobbed until he couldn't anymore, and then he decided to try and make his way home. When he got home, everyone was gone, his dad's truck was gone. He knew it'd be a matter of time before Geoff's body was found. Garret packed up everything he could and ran away before anyone spotted him.

Homelessness

Garret spent the next year wondering around on his own, with nothing to his name but the clothes on his back and a bag of his belongings. He was able to survive in the woods thanks to all the survival training his dad made him do, but he also got by through dumpster diving, theft, and the occasional generous donation.   All the while, his werewolf transformations kept happened, but Garret had no idea what was wrong with him, or how to deal with the problem. Many times making the mistake of being around people when it happened, and every time, remembering the gory, violent details in the morning.   He was quickly listed as a missing person in his home state, so he began hitchhiking to get out of the state, to ensure he wouldn't be found. He didn't want his family to know what had happened to him, feeling better with them thinking he was dead. Through this, he ended up outside a small town in Oregon known as Dusk Valley. Here, he ended up staying at an abandoned cabin in the woods, after he accidentally ate it's previous tenant, and eating the food that was stored inside.   He ended up getting sick, from a mixture of the upcoming cold season and his malnourished body he didn't take care of. His cold got worse as the full moon closed in, and in his sickly sluggishness he wasn't able to make it back to the cabin before he shifted. Shifting did not heal his cold, and the bitter September rain just made things worse. Garret began to suffer symptoms of hypothermia and collapsed in the woods.   A witch named Astrid Estelle was conveniently wondering the same woods for magical ingredients that only appeared in the rain, when she saw the pitiful werewolf. Feeling sympathy for him, she brought the wolf boy back to her car, warmed him up with blankets and took him home.

The Home for Monsters

Since the incedent, Garret has been living with Astrid, who promised to find a cure to his lycanthropy for him. He's made friends with a few other supernatural folk and as a result feels less alone, and more willing to deal with his condition in a healthy way.

On days where he is maybe hurting or stressed out, he enjoys just vegging on the couch and watching whatever is on TV.   He not as much into social gatherings as he used to be. He gets scared being around crowds, terrified of turning and hurting people. He hate activities like reading or studying, finding them boring and mind numbing. Another thing he hates is being called, or compared to a dog. He tends to distance himself as far from his werewolf side as he can, thus such comments are offensive to him.

Vices & Flaws

"You don't wanna know me. You'll just get hurt."
On the surface, Garret's biggest flaw is that he is slow. He's not stupid by any means, but he often makes armature mistakes and is quick to forget things he has been told. He's self conscious about this fact and get's angry and upset being called stupid.   However his biggest problem is depression and anxiety, brought on by his PTSD. He avoids people or situations out of fear and stops acting like himself. He gets into moods where he feels weak and helpless and is unwilling to stand up for himself. He considers relationships temporary and refuses to get close to people, just to have something happen to them. He doesn't take care of himself and insists he'll be okay on his own.

Her hesitance almost got her killed when Garret pinned her into a tree, but in a stroke of luck, it was time for Garret to revert back. He reverted in front of her and collapsed in her arms.   Realizing just how young and weak Garret was, she felt bad for him, and brought him to her place to sleep off the post-transformation tiredness. When Garret appreciated waking up in a warm house on a soft bed and thanked Lucy profusely for helping him.   Over time the two would form a close friendship as they got to know each other, and Lucy began to question her initial views on werewolves and supernaturals in general. Garret found Marina while he was fishing on the lake in town. A large object bumped the bottom of his boat which startled him. Investigating the issue, he sees the shadow of a 'massive fish' swimming below. As he leans over to get a closer look, a mer suddenly pops out to greet him. Garret attempts to communicate with the fish lady, but she is unable to speak with out human vocal cords, instead just making a serious of dolphin like chirps and whistles.   Garret keeps coming back to the lake and eventually decides to teach the mer sign language to communicate, and slowly learns her story of how she ended up in the lake in the first place. Garret eventually names her Marina.   One day Garret returns to the lake to see a naked young woman sitting on shoreline. When he questions her, the woman signs to him, telling him that she is Marina and that she has a 'land ape' form. After this Garret asks Marina if she wants to stay at Astrids house, and she agrees as long as there is a place to swim.   Marina joins the house and is quickly accepted as a new housemate.

History

Vasile was the first resident of the home for monsters that Garret met (at least in human form). Vasile was hostile towards Garret at first, knowing what he was by his smell and finding werewolves gross. However he wasn't out right cruel to him during his first month at the house.   When Garret's first full moon after coming to the house came, Vasile was morbidly curious of how werewolves shift and sneakily followed him as he ran out of the house. However he was unprepared for how violent and brutal a werewolf transformation could be. Shocked by this revelation, his stance on Garret shifted to one of sympathy. Vasile started going out into the forest early in the morning to help Garret home after shifting back, giving them the opportunity to open up to each other and get closer.

Relationship Description
Vasile and Garret are like a cat and dog, and butt heads often. Their personalities clash often and they get into arguments over silly things. But at the end of the day they get over it and have a laugh about the situation. Their fights are always pretty, like sibling fights. But they also will protect each other like siblings no matter what.

Relationship Description

History

Nymph was one of the first people Garret met after arriving to Astrid's home. At first Garret didn't really 'get' Nymph and was very confused by them. It would take a while before Garret would understand Nymph fully, but he'd eventually become more friendly with Nymph after learning more about them.

Relationship Description
Garret finds Nymph to be odd, as he doesn't completely understand things like magic and magical races. A lot of things go way over his head, but he still tries his best to related to nymph and be friendly with them.   Nymph finds Garret interesting as they've never spoken to a werewolf before, and they find the whole concept fascinating, if not a bit scary. Nymph uses their optimistic outlook on life to try to make Garret feel better about himself and more accepting of who he is.
