Ancient Elvish Language in Fantasme Imagination | World Anvil

Ancient Elvish

Ancient Elvish is an ancient language once used by the elves as until the 1500's, where they adopted the modern common language. Very few people still speak it as their first language, leaving it a dead language, but many linguists will still learn it for fun or for translating historical documents.

History & Usage

Ancient Elvish were used by many Elven cultures for centuries, and can still be found in ruins, books, and monuments dating back before the inception of the Mages Council. This includes old spells and spell books.   It's unknown what caused the sudden shift from this language, many historians blame the sudden influx of humans entering elven cities. However, there are a handful of conspiracies that put the blame on the Mages Council and their sudden banning of hundreds of Ancient Elvish books and literature. It's believed that they wished to ban the usages of spell books and spell scrolls that powerful incantations written in them in Ancient Elvish.   Efforts are still being made to keep the language from being forgotten completely, especially as it is vital for historians and archeologists to decipher ancient history. And too this day, many city names, as well as names for individuals in the Empire stem from Ancient Elvish etymology.

Modern Elvish

A modern form of Ancient Elvish still survives in the Dank Elf people. It has undergone a number of alterations in its grammar and vocabulary, but much of it is still discernable as being Elvish. This is likely due to the Dank Elves descending from an elven culture that existed before the The War of the Gods, and the fall of Suhkorium. Without contact from the isle above, they wouldn't have had the opportunity to be introduced to common.
