Draenen ddu

The draenen ddu is a rare species of lizard that lives in the leaves and briars of The Three Crone Tree. Small and obnoxious they defend the toxic tree with it's poisonous thorns with hissing and spitting an irritating sticky goo. They will also bite. Their bite causing a quick sharp pain. The diet of the draenen ddu consists of small insects which would damage their trees and the medicinal berries which healers harvest after the spring bloom.
In appearance the draenen ddu is a splotched mottled brown with a paler underside. They grow to a length of six inches. They nest within splits in the tree trunks and hollows around the roots. Packing these spaces with leaves and flower petals for insulation during the winter. They hibernate during the winter, however, it is not a continuous sleep. Draenen ddu often scamper about to drink and eat from their winter stores. 
The draenen ddu mate in early spring and give birth to, on average two or three live young.  The young grow rather quickly reaching maturity before their first winter hibernation. 
Live is not easy for the draenen ddu. They have birds as their primary natural predators. Especially the smaller Zython Hawk which is agile enough to dodge the thorns of the as they dive in and strike. The Sloe Weasel is another predatory which will raid nests.
Most unfortunate for the draenen ddu are the magical students from the School of the Black. These young mystics care not about any environmental damage they might cause. They are more concerned with the quick gaining of magical power and use the limbs of Three Crone Tree to construct their wands. This of course ruins any home the draenen ddu might have made within the boughs of the tree. 
Only time will tell if the draenen ddu will survive and continue on.
