Nathxena Fey Character in Faerûn | World Anvil

Nathxena Fey

"Every time, she's always just that tiny bit quicker than me. It's infuriating, and I love it."
Nathxena Fey (born 17 Eleint 1471) is a female half-elf adventurer. Born in the Underdark to a drow mother and human father, she grew up in the deadly house politics of Menzoberranzan. Although rejected by drow society due to her half-human heritage, she nevertheless found her calling as a member of the Ardent and later the Arrowheads.

Table of Contents

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Nathxena is a small and slim half-drow. Although she posesses little physical strength, she has excellent flexibility and coordination.

Apparel & Accessories

Nathxena usually dresses conservatively, preferring covering leathers and metals for her armour. When in places with strangers, she often wears a hood to at least partially disguise her drow heritage. When not wearing armour, her typical dress style is smart-casual and comfortable, such as shirts, pants, and dresses. Given the opportunity, at more extravagant events such as galas, Nathxena enjoys wearing very regal and opulent dresses.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Nathxena is the product of an affair between her drow mother and human father. Born into the house of Fey-Branche in 1471 DR, she was quickly removed from her House and placed in the care of her uncle, who lived on the outskirts of Menzoberranzan. A scout, he spent most of his time exploring and reconnoitring the caves surrounding the city. Nathxena would learn a great deal about scouting from him, including theoreticals about the surface. However, in 1488 DR, her uncle was accused of spying by House Fey-Branche, and quickly executed. Nathxena's already existing hatred of her House had inflamed into a fury. She agreed to rejoin the house to act as their spy - but planned on using the training they gave her to turn against them one day.
"What a worthless creature. She'll never amount to anything."
— Byrtyn Fey

Over the following years, Nathxena played the part of a dutiful young female drow. She followed the instructions of the priestesses, her mother, and her matron, as distasteful as they were, and they never suspected a thing. Over time, however, she managed to grow distant from House Fey-Branche. She was able to leave the city of her own accord more frequently and for longer periods of time, and, eventually, was able to break ties with her House permanently. She drifted about the Underdark and occasionally the surface, acting as a scout-for-hire. It was during one of these trips to the surface that she met the half-elf Sariel Liadon, and was convinced to join up with the Ardent.

Following the events involving the Ardent in late 1493-early 1494 DR, Nathxena, Sariel Liadon, and Valna Mellerelel formed the Arrowheads as an independent team within the Ardent. Nathxena has since gone on multiple missions to help slaves escape from Menzoberranzan.

Education

Being born into a Menzoberranzan Lolthite drow family meant that much of Nathxena's early education was focused entirely around intrigue. Despite her human heritage, House Fey-Branche viewed Nathxena as an asset that could be useful in their various skirmishes and intrigues against the other houses of Menzoberranzan. She also learned much in the streets of the city and the tunnels of the Underdark, essentially a trial by fire for her youth.

Employment

Throughout her life, Nathxena has had essentially one job: to spy and scout for whoever she's working for. In Menzoberranzan, she did whatever was asked of her by her house, following every order given as her life depended on it. However, after joining the Ardent, her tasks became much less distasteful and she gained a significant amount of personal and professional freedom.

Mental Trauma

As a half-drow conceived as the product of an affair, Nathxena was always treated much more harshly than other young drow - especially by her mother. Her mother was abusive to her both physically and mentally. Society in Menzoberranzan wasn't kind to Nathxena either, but she tried to keep her head down and make do as well as she could. Her poor upbringing has led her to be very untrusting of almost everyone, but she's also more resilient to the kinds of difficulties she was put through.

Morality & Philosophy

Nathxena has a fairly simple philosophy: she hates tyrants and loves freedom and self-determination. This was molded by her experiences in the totalitarian drow society of Menzoberranzan and its deadly politicking. She has dedicated her life to helping those in need, and breaking the chains of all of those enslaved by her kin and race. At any chance she gets she will try her hardest to stop any form of enslavement and unjust imprisonment. These morals drove her to leave her place of birth and seek a better life.

Taboos

Having grown up without a supportive family, the love and care that families show each other is completely lost on her. She believes in the strength of friendships and developed relationship over families. She finds these family dynamics and family kinship as a difficult to understand topic.
"The idea of spending time with someone and caring for them just because they are related to you is ludicrous."
— Nathxena Fey

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Nathxena's main motivation is to prevent what she views as the evil drow from expanding their domains and wreaking havoc aboveground. She's also motivated by her desire for freedom, both personal and for others. Since her escape from the Underdark, she's been strongly motivated by her desire to defend the strong friendships she has made with the other members of the Arrowheads.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Nathxena possesses a wide variety of skills learned in her years in the Underdark. One of the first and most important skills she developed was that of stealth, avoiding both dangerous creatures and rival drow in the narrow tunnels. She also excels at acrobatics, leveraging her light frame and excellent coordination to her advantage. As a half-drow, her house used her to scout on the surface, where the bright light of the sun blinds full-blooded drow. While avoiding surface-dwellers, Nathxena learned how to survive in the wilderness as easily as in a tavern. Between a silver tongue and very attractive appearance, Nathxena also finds that persuasion, deception, and all manner of social skills come easily to her.
"I had to correct her a few times, but Nathxena's really good at knowing plants! And shooting bows! And talking to people! And being sneaky! And... I should stop now, shouldn't I?"
While Nathxena is capable of impressive acrobatics, her physical strength isn't particularly impressive. She finds it difficult to move heavy objects or engage in hand-to-hand combat with even average-sized people. Aside from her strength, she is completely hopeless when it comes to dealing with animals in a way that doesn't involve eating them. She has no ability whatsoever to tame them, and often struggles to even mount a saddled horse.

Likes & Dislikes

Nathxena's favourite colour is blue. She particularly likes rock and mountain climbing, especially after scaling Mount Waterdeep with Sariel Liadon soon after meeting. Another like of hers is burglary and theft - the more wealthy the target, the better. Nathxena also enjoys playing the harp, sunbathing on the beach, going for hikes, and reading books on the outdoors or biographies of explorers. Having read a number of books since she joined the Arrowheads, Nathxena has developed a skill for writing. She enjoys writing about her adventures in a journal, and writing fictional stories to sell to chapbooks.   One thing Nathxena doesn't particularly enjoy is swimming, after several near-death incidents while adventuring. She also doesn't care much for those who would lord over others as tyrants, such as the drow matrons who rule Menzobarranzan. She also feels somewhat uncomfortable in cities and caves, instead preferring wide open outdoor areas. It should be noted though that she does not have claustrophobia. Nathxena doesn't like admitting it, but after her formative years living in the Underdark, she is afraid of lightning. After several visits, Nathxena has developed a dislike for the Feywild, as she finds it to be "too happy, bright, and doesn't make sense".

Virtues & Personality perks

Nathxena is very dedicated to herself, her cause, and those she cares about. She's willing to take risks when needed, but usually doesn't overextend herself. She cares for and looks out for those who cannot defend themselves, especially those oppressed by tyrannical rulers. Nathxena is also very cunning, often coming up with elaborate, risky plans that more often than not work out well.

Vices & Personality flaws

Although determined to see her goals completed, Nathxena is often easily distracted by anything that catches her interest. In addition, she can at times be overzealous in her actions, sometimes dispensing retribution rather than justice. Nathxena has also been known to desire carnal pleasures too much, sometimes to the detriment of her mission.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Technically, Nathxena is still a member of House Fey-Branche in Menzoberranzan, as they are unaware she has gone rogue on the surface. Due to this, she still maintains a number of contacts within her house and the drow city. However, her current life is on the surface above the Underdark, with the Ardent. She has, since late 1492 DR, gotten to know most of the members of the Ardent, including her employer Aial Vock Tal, the various managers of the group, and other adventurers. However, her best and closest friend is Sariel Liadon, who convinced her to abandon the drow. The two are very close, and often work and go out together.
"Nathxena Fey, I hereby award you the position of Chief Scout of the Ardent."

Family Ties

Nathxena was born into the middling drow noble house of Fey-Branche. Due to her poor treatment in her upbringing, she despises virtually all of them, especially her parents. She has cut ties with every member of her house and has tried to scrub any trace of herself to them. She will not mention her family name or her history to anyone she doesn't trust completely.

She has undergone several sabotage operations against the wealth and assets of her family - most importantly her involvement in the Battle of Menzoberranzan and her information gathering against the devil-aligned houses, of which parts of her family aided the ringleaders.

With a focus on forged relationships, Nathxena sees the Arrowheads as the closest thing to family. There she has found the love, support, and help she needs, when she actually asks for it. Her relationship with her girlfriend Sariel Liadon has deepened since the creation of the Arrowheads and their subsequent time spent together.

Religious Views

Unlike most Menzoberranzan drow, Nathxena rejects Lolth, instead worshipping Eilistraee, goddess of beauty, dance, song, and most importantly to Nathxena, freedom. If this were to become known by her familiy, she would become even more of a pariah.

She isn't very devout for religion, however still respects the faith. She sees her devotion to freedom and the breaking of chains as something that fills its place in her life.

Social Aptitude

Nathxena is very charismatic, willing and able to say whatever she needs to get her way while the other person thinks they're getting theirs. She's very extroverted and loves talking with people as well. Nathxena is very confident in everything she does, sometimes to the point of overconfidence or foolhardiness. Part of her charismatic ability is her talent to switch her persona on the fly depending on the situation. She's very capable and confident regardless of the situation, be it mingling with nobles or peasants.

Mannerisms

Nathxena doesn't particularly have any set mannerisms, instead preferring to change them depending on who she's talking to. In general though, she's nice and positive towards others, but has somewhat of a rebellious streak and dislikes being given orders. In addition, she very often flirts with whoever she wants.

This flirtly personality has stemmed from her youth and desire to be rebellious growing up, which she has tried recently to quell, after settling down and being grounded by her friends and girlfriend. She still however, maintains her rebellious views and distrust for tyrants and powerful governing bodies.
"Sariel, please be careful. At least let me know when you get back safe."
— Nathxena Fey

Hobbies & Pets

One of Nathxena's favourite hobbies is rock and mountain climbing. She also enjoys playing the harp, and the thrill of stealing from somewhere she isn't supposed to be. Nathxena also likes to go sunbaking on the beach, camping, and exploring the great outdoors.

The smell of trees, the dirt, and the smell of morning dew in the air are her favourite things to experience. These are her favourite as they are the complete antithesis to her childhood. The feeling of the strongest breeze at the top of mountains makes her feel more free than anything else.

Speech

Nathxena speaks with a very calm, collected, and paced manner. She speaks with a refined accent and speaks with an elevated vocabulary, from her education in her youth. She tries to remain calm and proper but has been known to get aggravated and loud when she is being spoken over, or someone is not taking her seriously.

History

"I know she's a thief, because she stole my heart."
— Nathxena Fey

Sariel and Nathxena met on 2 Uktar, 1492, in a tavern in Silverymoon. They quickly took a liking to each other, drinking and swapping stories. Nathxena was looking for a way out of Menzoberranzan, and Sariel was the first person the half-drow had ever felt she could trust. The next morning, Nathxena accepted Sariel's offer to join the Ardent.

The duo have been on multiple adventures, including getting a major criminal arrested by way of a fancy ball, surviving on a mystical island in the Feywild, and stopping the schemes of several giant lords. The two have become extremely close during these adventures, and rarely spend much time apart.

Nicknames & Petnames

Sariel's nicknames for Nathxena are usually just her name shorted to Nat or Xena. Nathxena's nicknames for Sariel are usually Sarry or Ell, also shortened forms of the latter's name.

Relationship Reasoning

While Sariel just liked Nathxena from the start, Nathxena found Sariel the first person she could really trust and open up with. While the two find each other very attractive, it's this unique trust and openness that Nathxena has with Sariel that really draws them together. This is compounded by the fact that Sariel was the first person to offer Nathxena a safe place to live and an exciting job. Over time, their shared experiences and hardhsips adventuring have forged an incredibly tight bond between the two.

Commonalities & Shared Interests

The two have a large number of similarities and shared interests. They share general goals of justice and freedom, as well as defeating various threats to the Sword Coast. Their strengths are also similar - acrobatics, skill at stealth, archery, persuasive talent, and attractiveness. Further, their weaknesses are aligned as well - a lack of physical strength, and both have a tendency to fall for a pretty face. They both share hobbies, such as rock climbing, archery, theft, sneaking where they shouldn't be, running on city roofs, and sharing a drink at the tavern.

Shared Acquaintances

Both Sariel and Nathxena are members of the Ardent, and both know most of the adventurers and staff in it. They both share a friend in Valna Mellerelel, who is a member of the Arrowheads. Both of the half-elves are also close friends with the young bronze dragon Zelifarn, regularly going on adventures together. Both are co-owners of The Bronze Dragon, and personally know all the employees well.

History

Nathxena was brought to Aial's attention when they were introduced by their mutual friend, Sariel Liadon. After a brief introduction period, Aial offered Nathxena the position of Chief Scout in his newly formed Ardent mercenary company. Nathxnea's actions were vital during the conflict with House Helvirae, and Aial came to greatly respect her.

Following the establishment of the Arrowheads, Nathxena and Aial see each other far less than they used to. Despite this, they still have a mutual respect for each other.

History

Valna and Nathxena met as part of the Ardent. They remained acquaintances for many months, until Sariel Liadon invited the latter to archery practice with the former. Since then, Nathxena has been training Valna is several roguish techniques she has learned. In early 1494 DR, Valna, Nathxena, and Sariel formed the Arrowheads, and now often spend time adventuring together.

Nicknames & Petnames

Valna and Nathxena do not use nicknames for each other. They always refer to each other by their full first names.

Relationship Reasoning

Nathxena enjoys Valna's company due to her high competency, and the fact that Valna is the most genuinely nice person that Nathxena knows. Even though Nathxena doesn't have much tolerance for naivety, she makes an exception for Valna. Valna on the other hand simply enjoys being around Nathxena, who she considers fun to talk to and do activities with.

Commonalities & Shared Interests

Valna and Nathxena share a strong love of archery and the outdoors. They also enjoy reading, especially about survivalism and explorers, as well as going on hiking and camping trips together.

Shared Acquaintances

Sariel Liadon is the strongest shared acquaintance between the two, as she introduced them to each other. The three of them are also members of the Arrowheads and often adventure together. Enna Liadon and Emilia Leveva, also Arrowheads members, are two more close friends. Valna and Nathxena also maintain contact with the other former members of Beta Team, especially Altin Mellerelel, Valna's brother.

History

Emilia and Nathxena met when they were introduced by Sariel Liadon in early 1494 DR. Emilia later joined the Arrowheads, again after an invitation by Sariel Liadon. Since Emilia's joining, her and Nathxena have been on numerous adventures together - usually with others, but sometimes just the two of them.

Nicknames & Petnames

Nathxena often refers to Emilia as "Em". While Emilia usually prefers to refer to everyone by their full first name, when she is either very very casual or very very flustered she may refer to Nathxena as simply 'Xena'.

Relationship Reasoning

The basis of Emilia's and Nathxena's relationship is built on the foundation of the Arrowheads. While they didn't get along at first, them constantly talking to each other over the course of several months and Emilia discovering Nathxena's more intellectual hobbies has deepened their relationship a surprising amount.

Commonalities & Shared Interests

While Nathxena has some innate drow magic, she and Emilia often bond of the fact that they are the only two members of the Arrowheads not trained in magic.

Description

Nathxena hails from the darkness of Menzoberranzan, but wishes she didn't. A skilled sharpshooter and tracker, she is nonetheless as capable running through the Underdark as she is navigating the streets of Waterdeep.

In combat, Nathxena will attempt to find an elevated and covered position with good visibility, and hide there. She uses her stealth to remain hidden, and her crossbow's range to keep enemies at bay. Her primary targets are weaker rear-line enemies, like spellcasters or archers. If forced into melee, she will use her shortsword while she attempts to disengage and gain distance.

Ideals

"Chains are meant to be broken, as are those who would forge them."

Bonds

"I owe my escape from Menzoberranzan to the Ardent."

Flaws

"I'm very easily distract- ooh, is that some loose coin?"

Special Equipment. Nathxena wields a stirring dragon's wrath light crossbow and a +1 shortsword. She wears a set of +1 studded leather armor, a ring of lightning resistance, boots of elvenkind, and a cape of the mountebank (accounted for in her statistics).
Fey Ancestry. Nathxena has advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put her to sleep.
Evasion. If Nathxena is subjected to an effect that allows her to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, she instead takes no damage if she succeeds on the saving throw, and only half damage if she fails. She can't use this trait if she's incapacitated.
Sneak Attack (1/turn). Nathxena deals an extra 28 (8d6) damage when she hits a target with a weapon attack and has advantage on the attack roll, or when the target is within 5 feet of an ally of Nathxena that isn't incapacitated and Nathxena doesn't have disadvantage on the attack roll.
Ambush Master. Nathxena has advantage on initiative rolls.
Elven Accuracy. Whenever Nathxena has advantage on an attack roll using Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma, she can reroll one of the dice once. In addition, attacking at long range doesn't impose disadvantage on her ranged attack rolls, and her ranged weapon attacks ignore half cover and three-quarters cover.
Innate Spellcasting. Nathxena's spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 15). She can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
At will: dancing lights
1/day each: darkness, faerie fire

Actions

Multiattack. Nathxena makes one attack with her crossbow or two with her shortsword.
Stirring Dragon's Wrath Light Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, range 80/320 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8 + 5) piercing and 3 (1d6) lightning damage. On a critical hit, the target and all creatures within 5 ft. of it take an additional 5 lightning damage.
+1 Shortsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d6 + 5) piercing damage.

Bonus Actions

Cunning Action. Nathxena takes the Dash, Disengage, or Hide action.
Steady Aim. Nathxena gives herself advantage on her next attack roll on the current turn. She can use this bonus action only if she hasn't moved during this turn, and after she uses the bonus action, her speed is 0 until the end of the current turn.

Reactions

Uncanny Dodge. Nathxena halves the damage that she takes from an attack that hits her. She must be able to see the attacker.
Skirmisher. When an enemy ends its turn within 5 feet of Nathxena, she can move up to half her speed as a reaction. This movement doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks.
