Medari Fairwind Character in Faerûn | World Anvil

Medari Fairwind

Medari Fairwind (born Midsummer 1470 DR) is a human woman, former sailor of the Blue Dragons, and Warlock of the archfey Elias Alastai. Born to a family with a long tradition of sailing, she enlisted with the Blue Dragons at the age of 17, shortly after the Cormyr-Netheril War. However, she left after two years, opting to become an adventurer instead. In spring of 1491 DR, she was narrowly saved from a permanent death by an emissary of Elias Alastai, who had appreciated her accidentally allowing him to eliminate a rival that had fled to the Material Plane. Medari accepted an offer of employment by him, becoming a Warlock. In 1494 DR, she also accepted an offer from her friend Emilia Leveva to captain the Twilight Wanderer for the Arrowheads adventuring group.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Medari is slightly above average height for a woman, slim, and athletic. She has somewhat above average strength, and can hold her own against men larger than her. She is very dexterous, with a good sense of balance and ability to do some acrobatic tricks.

Special abilities

Medari has always had some skill with arms, but her (relatively) small size prevented her from using her favourite - a trident - as effectively as she could. However, when she became a warlock of Elias Alastai, she was granted a Pact of the Blade. She learned how to summon a weapon from the Weave itself, and the instinctual knowledge on how to use anything she picked up (so long as she doesn't think about it too hard).

In addition, she has learned to use magic and cast spells, like other warlocks. She particularly likes mirror image, as she believes it allows her to assert her dominance over a foe more effectively. Her fey magic also gives her the ability to cast mage armor on herself at-will, which is useful when diving (as she fully disrobes when swimming). In addition, her eyes are enhanced by magic, allowing her to see perfectly at a fair distance into pitch darkness.

Apparel & Accessories

For her casual clothing, Medari typically dresses in a short, sleeveless tunic and knee-high leather boots. Onboard ships, however, she wears a more conservative ensemble of leather boots, pants, a frilled shirt, and a jacket. When diving, Medari strips down to her smallclothes, relying on her mage armor to protect her. Medari doesn't like attending events that require formalwear, and only goes when forced to by Emilia Leveva. As such, she deliberately tries to annoy her friend by wearing as revealing dresses as possible.

In battle, Medari wears a set of blue dragon scale armor, made from the scales of a powerful blue dragon. She received it as a gift from her patron, Elias Alastai, who believed she had strong romantic feelings towards a blue dragon (in reality, she still felt attached to her experience with the Blue Dragons). It consists of a metal formfitting chest piece overlaid with dragon scales, which fully covers the arms. The leg pieces are thigh-high metal boots, also covered in dragon scales. In addition, it has a short skirt made from scales, which partly covers her legs.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Medari Fairwind was born on Midsummer of 1470 DR. Her father, a Mate with the Blue Dragons, and her mother, a treasure diver, lived in the city of Suzail. While not the richest family, her mother's treasure diving allowed Medari to experience a modicum of wealth growing up. However, the nature of treasure diving meant that the nature of the wealth was quite inconsistent.

In early 1484 DR, Medari's mother managed to recover a sizable treasure haul. It was enough to allow her father to retire from the Blue Dragons and purchase a small cargo ship of their own. As war broke out between Cormyr and Netheril, Medari aided her family in running their ship, sailing cargo between Cormyrean ports. During this time, Medari's mother also instructed her on free diving and treasure diving, and her father taught her how to use various weapons.

In 1487 DR, Medari enlisted in the Blue Dragons. She had seen enough of the safe coasts of Cormyr, and instead wanted excitement and adventure. She barely passed the physical tests to join, and was inducted on the first day of Mirtul, 1487 DR. However, Medari quickly discovered why there were significantly fewer women than men in the Blue Dragons. As the only woman aboard her vessel, she was constantly the subject of sexual advances by the rest of the enlisted crew. Despite this, Medari found ways of making herself a respected member of the crew - often through accepting those advances, niceties, deception, or outright intimidation.

After three years in the navy, Medari had enough, and resigned in 1490 DR. She returned to her parents to help with their ship, but also took up adventuring on occasion. Over time though, adventuring took up more and more of her time, and it became her career. She would travel around the coast, helping people with minor problems like missing pets and marauding monsters.

In mid 1491 DR, she had heard of a 'creature' terrorising the folk of a small fishing village on the Cormyrean coast. She managed to track it to its underwater lair, and went to confront it with nothing but her trident. When she made her way into the flooded cave, she discovered that it was no creature, but an eladrin warlock who had betrayed the Court of Coral. She fought him, and in the process, destroyed a magical ward concealing the cave. The warlock flew into a fury, breaking her trident, and pinning her to the cave wall until she drowned.

However, a number of Shiere Knights of Elias Alastai transported themselves to the cave and apprehended the warlock. As Medari had helped them eliminate a traitor to the Court of Coral, she was brought with them back to the Feywild, revived with magic, and granted an audience with the archfey Elias Alastai himself. He offered her the traitor's position in his court as a warlock, which she accepted.

She received martial training and magic from the Court of Coral. After a time, she was permitted to return to the Material Plane. Her newfound abilities granted her the ability to pursue more dangerous quests, taking on powerful monsters by herself. For the next few years, she adventured solo, but didn't become particularly wealthy. She would often return to her parents to aid them with anything they required.

Wishing for more independence from her parents, Medari aventured far afield from Suzail. Rather than pay for inns, she would persuade people to let her stay overnight at their home. In Eleisas of 1493 DR, Medari met another adventurer, Emilia Leveva, who had recently arrived in Suzail. Medari had been thinking about settling down more permanently in one place, and convinced Emilia to share the cost of a renting a home within the city. The two would live together for several months, before Emilia ultimately elected to move on from her homeland to the far-off city of Waterdeep.

With her roommate gone and lacking a suitable replacement, Medari had to take on larger, more time-consuming, and dangerous quests by herself to continue her lifestyle. Even though her friend had moved to Waterdeep, Medari was able to correspond with her via courier regularly. In early Flamerule, 1494 DR, Emilia returned to Suzail to reunite with her friends. She caught up with Medari, and presented her with a job offer: Medari could be the first mate of the Twilight Wanderer, which would be a de facto captain. Before Emilia had left the city, Medari agreed. She spent the next tenday preparing to leave and saying goodbye, having one last (early) birthday celebration with her parents in mid Flamerule.

In Waterdeep, Medari was introduced to the Arrowheads and the Twilight Wanderer. With her at the helm, the ship made its maiden voyage in late Flamerule. She was entrusted with the ship by Sariel Liadon, its owner and Medari's employer. Since then, Medari has sailed up and down the Sword Coast with her crew, carrying cargo, salvaging treasure, and transporting the Arrowheads.

Personality Characteristics

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Having grown up on the sea, Medari is particularly adept at all things nautical - tying ropes, maintaining a ship, navigation, and the like. She was also tutored by her mother in deep treasure diving, and can hold her breath for a considerable time. Medari is also skilled at using various weapons and fighting, both above and below water. She is stronger than many of her friends, and is often relied on for moving (relatively) heavy objects.

Outside of her particular areas of expertise, she lacks much in the way of general knowledge. While not ignorant, she is less aware of most details - especially when contrasted with her intelligent friends, like Emilia Leveva.

Social

Social Aptitude

Medari has a very strong social aptitude, capable of identifying the correct way to proceed in a social situation. She is adept at using intimidation, lying, charm, and simple persuasion to navigate a conversation. She holds herself properly, standing up straight, almost at attention most of the time. She only allows herself to properly relax in casual situations, like drinking at a tavern with friends. Those who know Medari from a professional situation are often surprised by how laid-back and casual she is in a casual setting.

Mannerisms

Medari acts however she feels she needs to in the moment. When she's on duty or requires responsibility, she is loud, intimidating, and commands respect. When she's off duty and having fun, she acts in a completely different manner - happy, cheerful, outgoing, and even flirtatious on occasion. She is capable of swapping between her two moods at the drop of a hat, even mid-sentence. Her forceful personality developed as a response to being the only woman onboard a Blue Dragons vessel with a crew of fifty, and aided her in gaining the respect of her male crewmates. Her experience onboard ships has also given her a sailor's vocabulary, and she often swears profusely.

Special Equipment. Medari wears a set of blue dragon scale armor. She can summon a magical trident of rupturing.
Pact of the Blade. Medari can summon any simple or martial weapon, or her trident of rupturing, as an action. Any weapon summoned in this way is considered a +1 weapon, and can act as a focus for her spells. If a weapon requires ammunition, it is provided. Her trident of rupturing and any weapons summoned through this feature are made from magical energy and can only be wielded by her. Medari uses her Charisma modifier for attack and damage rolls with her summoned weapons.
Action Surge (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). After taking one action on her turn, Medari can take one additional action.
Fey's Sight. Medari can see normally in darkness, both magical and nonmagical, to a distance of 120 feet.
Armor of Shdows. Medari can cast mage armor on herself at will, requiring no material components.
Spellcasting. Medari is a 9th-level spellcaster. Her spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 15, +7 to hit with spell attacks). She regains her expended spell slots when she finishes a short or long rest. She knows the following warlock spells:
Cantrips (at-will): eldritch blast, mage hand, minor illusion, prestidigitation
1st-5th level (2 5th-level slots): dimension door, darkness, dispel magic, faerie fire, hold monster, mirror image, misty step, shadow of moil, summon fey, teleportation circle

Actions

Multiattack. Medari attacks three times with a melee weapon.
Trident of Rupturing. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8 + 5) piercing damage and 3 (1d6) cold damage. Once per turn, when Medari hits a large or smaller creature with her trident of rupturing, she can force it to make a DC 15 Strength saving throw. On a failure, the target is pushed back 10 feet.
Eldritch Blast. Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 120 ft., one creature. Hit: 9 (1d10 + 4) force damage. When Medari casts this spell, it creates three beams. She can direct the beams at the same target or at different ones. She makes a separate attack roll for each beam.
Fey Presence (recharges after a short rest). Each creature in a 10-foot cube originating from Medari makes a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, the creature is charmed or frightened by Medari (her choice) until the end of her next turn.

Reactions

Misty Escape (recharges after a short rest). When Medari takes damage, she can use her reaction to turn invisible and teleport up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space she can see. She remains invisible until the start of her next turn or until she attacks or casts a spell.
