Gael Character in Faerûn | World Anvil

Gael

Gael is a young half-elf man and member of The Guild in Baldur's Gate. An accomplished acrobat and burglar, he and his crew are specialists in getting in and out without ever being seen. In late 1487 DR, he recruited Sariel Liadon to his crew, and later became her boyfriend for a time. After her departure in 1490 DR, the crew's fortunes turned, and they were forced into hiding for a time. Once the heat died down, Gael has attempted to rebuild his crew, to some success. He was able to recruit Lureen Greycastle and Maxwell as well as some new faces, but the others he could not obtain.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Gael is above average height for a half-elf, slightly stronger than average, and quite lean. He is flexible, acrobatic, and athletic, but not particularly tough.

Apparel & Accessories

Gael tends to wear fancy, if aging, overcoats, with a shirt underneath and simple pants. While he occasionally wears boots, he prefers to instead wear formal shoes. His clothing is either dark or light colours, accentuated by gold accents. For formal occasions, he simply wears his regular clothing, as it fits in well enough with the suits of other well-dressed men. His thick overcoat protects him during combat, offering protection about equivalent to basic leather armour.

Personal history

Gael was born in 1468 DR in the city of Baldur's Gate. Growing up in the Outer City, his parents were abusive towards him and each other. They had little money, and forced him to steal to get by. By age fourteen, Gael had enough, and ran away from his home. For six months he survived by stealing and sleeping wherever he could. However, he eventually ran afoul of The Guild (by causing a footpad to be arrested), and given a choice - find some way to pay back his debt monetarily, or replace the man he had gotten imprisoned by joining the The Guild. With little hesitation, he chose the latter.

Gael ended up with a small group led by Grigor Kulenov, operating in Eastway under the area's kingpin. Grigor had a strong nostalgia for the 'old days' of crime in Baldur's Gate, and preferred to perform burglaries and heists over shakedowns and smuggling. Gael found himself quite adept with a rapier, often called upon to defend the crew (at least until Maxwell joined). He also took up a position within the Baldur's Gate Circus Troupe, in order to find a good acrobat to join his crew.

He met that acrobat in Ches of 1486 DR, when he met the fifteen-year-old Sariel Liadon. She had been recruited by Archibald Milner the previous year to join the circus, and was beginning her tenure as it opened back up for the year. He was made her performing partner, and the two quickly became romantically involved. After several months, he had been convinced by her skills, and extended an invitation for her to join The Guild. She accepted, becoming the group's acrobat - though Gael himself had picked up a number of acrobatic skills.

Under Grigor's leadership, the crew executed many successful heists over the following years. Although Gael drifted apart from Sariel, who had become more and more lascivious, the two stayed somewhat close. He continued with his position in the Baldur's Gate Circus Troupe, where he and Sariel became minor celebrities for a time (her revealing outfit and their implied relationship helped with that matter). Gael's skill at thievery eventually got him promoted to an Operator within The Guild by his Kingpin.

After a particularly successful heist in 1490 DR, Sariel Liadon had received permission to depart from The Guild. After she left the crew, they found it difficult to maintain their success. A poorly executed heist several months later left three Flaming Fist mercenaries seriously injured and Gael with too much heat to show his face. A year later, in 1494 DR, Grigor announced his retirement, promoting Gilbert to leader. However, a month after Grigor retired, Gilbert did as well.

Even as his crew was falling apart, Gael made efforts to keep it together. He persuaded both Lureen Greycastle and Maxwell to stay, and instead focusing on smaller-scale jobs while he found new blood. He attempted to get back in touch with Sariel, but she had long since departed for Waterdeep. Over the following years, Gael slowly built up his new crew - not to the same heights as his peak, but enough to maintain respect from his fellows in The Guild.
