Emilia Leveva

"Emmy's always ready with a riposte, even when she doesn't have a sword on her."
— Sariel Liadon
Emilia Dragomira Sergeyeva Leveva (born 27 Flamerule 1473) is a human adventurer hailing from the Cormyrean hinterlands. Originally from the Lev noble family in Cormyr, she absconded from their estate in the Storm Horn Mountains to seek adventure. She is now a core member of the Arrowheads adventuring group, located in Waterdeep.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Emilia has a relatively short and slender frame compared to the average human, but her slight build belies her fitness and athletic ability. She is very limber and surprisingly durable considering her small stature, but after years of exercise she still struggles to perform feats of strength at even an average level. Emilia also suffers from severe against-the-rule astigmatism, and requires expensive corrective lenses to properly focus her vision.

Apparel & Accessories

Emilia's wardrobe may be best described as a compromise between her desire for modest practicality and her love of noble fineries. When not adventuring, she almost exclusively wears comfortable and unrestrictive shirts and trousers in muted colours, yet these practical garments are typically adorned with ruffles and frills and made from high-end materials such as silk or velvet. Emilia also loves fancy neckwear and tends to wear such a piece, usually a silk jabot, regardless of the restriction it might cause to her neck. Her only staple 'accessory' is her spectacles, which she requires due to her severe astigmatism. Despite her flair for fineries, Emilia generally prefers to dress modestly and avoids accentuating her physical features, much to the confusion of some of her adventuring partners.

While adventuring, Emilia is typically clad in armour, considering the weight and discomfort preferable to being left vulnerable. While Emilia has experience with medium and heavy armour, and adventured for several years in semi-flexible half plate, her current set is comprised of mithral plate armour. In her choice of armour one can see the same conflict or compromise between practicality and opulence. Her armour tends to be practical first and foremost, offering protection wherever possible and ideally allowing some manoeuvrability, but is then decorated with intricate patterns, often incorporating a floral motif and the House Lev colours of black and gold. Her most recent set also features the House's coat of arms, demonstrating her loyalty to her House despite her direct defiance of its head. Underneath her armour she typically wears plain, snug clothing to cushion its weight and avoid contact with the steel.

Emilia has a dislike of the cold and cold weather, and so usually dresses in stuffy clothes designed to retain heat. In winter, she tends to wear multiple additional layers and covers up as much as possible. Conversely, the heat really doesn't bother Emilia - or at least doesn't bother her enough to surmount her modesty - and so she tends to wear her standard, stuffy clothes even in decidedly inappropriate temperatures.

Emilia additionally owns one or two very extravagant and impractical ballgowns and accompanying accessories, that she only wears on very special (and very formal) occasions. It is only for these 'ballgown events' that she drops any concerns for modesty and practicality and focuses entirely on noble extravagance, and may consequently look near unrecognisable. With how rarely such events actually take place in the life of an adventurer, few if any of even her close friends have actually seen these outfits, which otherwise stay well out of anyone's view.

Specialized Equipment

At present, Emilia's standard equipment for combat consists of a suit of mithral plate armour, a shield, a frost brand longsword, and a concealed +1 dagger. Emilia, having previously consistently struggled with the weight of heavy armour, was overjoyed to acquire a set of mithral, which provides the same protection for a fraction of the weight. Her shield, still non-magical, bears the emblem of the House of Lev.
"Keep two weapons with you at all times: one revealed, as a deterrent; and one concealed, for emergencies."
— Brun Scalorax, Precautions for Travel

Though Emilia was initially somewhat reluctant to acquire a magical weapon, fearing a reliance on magic, she later accepted it as a necessity for adventusing, and now uses a slightly unorthodox frost brand longsword. Emilia considers the frost brand particularly desirable for its useful secondary properties and because she herself dislikes the cold, making inflicting it on her enemies a compelling effect for her. Emilia's current longsword is forged from mithral and weighted more like a rapier than a traditional longsword to account for her lighter frame. However, she still occassionally needs to grip it with both hands to balance it effectively in a fight, strapping her shield to her arm to accommodate this. Despite preferring to 'fight fair', Emilia also conceals her 'lucky dagger' (in fact a +1 dagger) on her person at all times - doing so has saved her life more than once, such as in her duel with the 'Dragon King', though she would prefer not to admit it.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Emilia was born at her family’s estate of Lev's Keep a few days before Midsummer of 1473 DR, the second child of Baron Sergey Levev and his wife Irene Barian. Mere weeks before her birth, Irene’s brother Conrad, then an up-and-coming ‘frontier baron’, was revealed as a fraud and disappeared from the country, raising tensions in the Lev household. Irene reportedly died in childbirth, and Emilia was wet nursed from birth.   Emilia’s childhood was a lonely one. Growing up in her family’s comfortable but isolated estate with reasonably treacherous surrounding environs, she had practically no interactions with people other than her immediate family and servants. Even among that limited pool Emilia was relatively ignored – her father spent much of his attention on his son and heir Ivan, rarely acknowledging his quiet, ‘inconsequential’ daughter. In her mind, her closest friend and family member throughout her childhood was her pet cat, Chestnut.   With little opportunity for socialising, and largely sequestered within the walls of Lev’s Keep, Emilia developed several hobbies to stave off the boredom. Receiving an education typical of a Cormyrean noble, Emilia quickly proved herself a fast learner and learned to read at a very young age. Emilia later came across the substantial library built in the keep by her great-grandfather Nikolay Levev and soon became a voracious reader, often sequestering herself in the library for hours each day. Emilia read each book in the keep several times, even the driest administrative, economic, and political tomes, which soon caused her to develop an appreciation for the topics. Her rare visits to Suzail or other large cities were of great excitement primarily because she could augment the library with newer works.   In addition to reading, Emilia engaged in several other hobbies, most notably painting and chess. She would often stand on the battlements of Lev’s Keep and paint the rugged surrounding landscapes – a hobby she continues to this day, although she maintains her works are ‘decidedly amateurish’. Emilia became interested in chess – a popular pastime in Cormyr – after reading strategic accounts of it in some of her great-grandfather’s tomes. Emilia would sometimes force servants in the Keep to play against her, and even occasionally played her brother and father, the latter of whom abruptly quit once it appeared she had the upper hand. Emilia also played against herself more times than she cared to admit.   Emilia’s adolescence was also tinged by war – namely Cormyr’s war against Sembia and Netheril from 1484 to 1486 DR. Though Lev’s Keep was not near the front lines nor of particular strategic importance, a Netherese assault on the fort was a distinct possibility, and it was deemed the Lev children would need to defend themselves. Despite her young age (being only ten or eleven at the beginning of the war) and diminutive frame, Emilia was taught to fight in heavy armour alongside her brother, though she struggled under its weight. Though the greataxe was the traditional weapon of the House of Lev, Emilia was too weak to effectively lift or swing one, let alone fight with one. She was able to convince her instructor to train her with a sword and shield, arguing that if she was expected to defend herself she should be given more defensive tools. These weapons were still unwieldy for her small and weak frame, but with enough practice she could manage to wield them somewhat effectively. Though active war in Cormyr would last only two years, Emilia continued training with weapons as a ‘productive pastime’.   In her adolescence Emilia additionally developed a great interest in fencing, having purchased first an adventure book about a great duellist and then several practical tomes on the topic on one of her few visits to Suzail. Fencing captured the young Emilia’s attention as a fighting style that relied much more on manoeuvre and technique than on raw strength. At the age of fourteen, she begged her father for formal training in the subject, which he firmly dismissed as a ‘waste of time’. The ever-persistent Emilia continued with her requests until her father eventually agreed to hire her a tutor. Sergey selected Khezeir Adaskar, a master swordsman who had won some renown as a member of Cormyr’s elite Purple Dragons. Khezeir was known as a harsh and unforgiving man who would never ease up for less experienced sparring partners, and Sergey hoped that a series of humiliating defeats and harsh words at the master’s relentless hand would demoralise Emilia into quitting the endeavour. Instead, Emilia became more determined to learn and more impressed with the fighting style with each quick defeat, and Khezeir’s reprimands, while harsh, always gave useful critiques for improvement. Emilia would continue training with the blade for the rest of her adolescence, and after a few years was able to fluently pull off the manoeuvres she had only read about before. In later years, Emilia would continue to fence as a hobby, and incorporated many of her learned manoeuvres into her practical combat.   Emilia, despite all the hobbies she took up to occupy herself, was increasingly unsatisfied with her situation. She remained quite lonely and under-stimulated, and yearned both to experience more of the world and put her learned skills to use in a somewhat meaningful way. Though she explained all this to her distant father, he refused to allow her to leave the Keep, hoping to marry her off to improve the House of Lev’s standing within Cormyrean society as she came of age. Emilia, having no intention of trading one remote estate for another, protested constantly, though those protests fell on deaf ears. With her choices narrowed to either waiting for her father to arrange a political marriage or unilaterally absconding from her family estate, Emilia began considering the latter. Luckily for Emilia, few landed, unmarried noblemen would bother approaching the distant and increasingly lawless Storm Horn Mountains for a potential partner of low noble standing, and Sergey consistently failed to arrange any betrothal for her. Emilia’s beloved pet cat died just days after her eighteenth birthday, removing her main incentive to remain in the Keep, and hastening her secret departure. On Midsummer of 1491 DR, with the estate’s servants away enjoying the festivities, Emilia absconded from Lev’s Keep with her belongings, aided by her sympathetic brother Ivan, who she promised to keep in contact with.   Following her uneventful escape into the Cormyrean wilderness, Emilia quickly turned to adventuring to make ends meet, making use of her substantial combat training. As a solo adventurer, Emilia was not affected by the Kingdom’s many restrictions and regulations on adventuring parties, and as a Cormyrean noble she had the unrestricted right to carry weapons through the nation’s territory. These factors allowed her a fairly unique efficiency in adventuring within Cormyr. Emilia based herself around the King’s Forest and Storm Horn Mountains, where few other adventurers bothered to travel owing to the region’s remoteness and relatively poor and sparse population. There she established herself as a practically minded adventurer who would happily solve residents’ (usually monster-related) issues for a reasonable compensation. Over the following roughly two years of low-scale adventuring, Emilia could consistently support her lifestyle and attained a good – if somewhat modest – reputation among the townsfolk of western Cormyr for her endeavours. Occasionally operating within the remote demesne of House Lev, Emilia sometimes worried her father would send people to drag her back to the Keep, but those fears never manifested.   For several months in 1493 DR, Emilia investigated the intensified orcish bandit activity throughout western Cormyr, unknowingly interfering with the so-called ‘March of the Dragon King’. Throughout this period, Emilia was exposed to the rigours of larger-scale adventuring, spending multiple tendays away from civilization for the first time. It was in this more hostile environment that she developed some of her more advanced practical adventuring skills, but also began questioning whether she wanted to continue adventuring on her own. In Flamerule of that year, Emilia somewhat unintentionally tracked down the eponymous ‘Dragon King’, orcish bandit Nalvar, ultimately triumphing over him in a brutal, protracted duel that left her stranded in the Storm Horn Mountains with two heavily wounded legs and few supplies. Though she was luckily rescued, her many unpleasant experiences over the previous months prompted her to leave the area behind and see more of the world. Using her carefully managed funds, Emilia travelled firstly to Suzail, where she spent a few months, before electing to travel further afield, taking the expensive portal through to the grand city of Waterdeep.   Shortly after arriving in Waterdeep, Emilia made the acquaintance of fellow adventurer Sariel Liadon, after the latter approached the former in a bar. The two soon began meeting regularly, and found surprising success as partners on several small adventures. In Tarsakh of 1494, Sariel invited Emilia to her new adventuring group, the Arrowheads, and Emilia elected to join. She remains a core member of the organisation, also serving as its de facto treasurer after she stemmed the immense financial losses the group was accruing.

Education

Emilia received a typical formal tutelage in her youth, covering Cormyrean history and proper etiquette as well as things like reading and mathematics, though she was often left to her own devices. A voracious reader, Emilia accrued much of her knowledge from her estate’s oft-neglected library, which covered a range of historical, administrative, and economic topics. Alongside these formal and informal scholarly studies, Emilia trained with a variety of weapons and armour types to varying levels of success, becoming especially proficient in swordplay thanks to her many years of intensive fencing practise. She remains a fast learner and diligent study, and has ample opportunities to utilise her administrative knowledge and combat training as a core member of the Arrowheads.

Employment

Born to a well-off noble family, Emilia had no need for employment throughout her youth and adolescence. After absconding from Lev's Keep at eighteen, Emilia worked for over two years as a freelance adventurer based in western Cormyr, where her status as a noble and a solo adventurer allowed her to bypass many of the Cormyrean legal restrictions on the profession. After journeying to Waterdeep, Emilia joined the Arrowheads adventuring group. As well as participating in adventures, she acts as a planner and de facto secretary and treasurer for the group, keeping the Arrowheads financially stable despite constant setbacks and performing most of the administrative duties that were simply not being done before she joined.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

In excessively general terms, Emilia is motivated to ‘do the right thing.’ She supports the rule of law as a general good and holds herself to its standards, but ultimately wishes to do good and help people. In regards specifically to adventuring, Emilia is quite curious – though more cautious than many of her colleagues in the Arrowheads – and loves the new experiences and discoveries that come through adventure. As long as she can continue to support her lifestyle, financial rewards are a secondary concern to Emilia – though she is not so naïve as to not appreciate them, they are not likely to motivate her to perform a task she is otherwise uninterested in. Emilia also considers herself bound by her obligations, both on the small scale regarding things she has agreed to and on a larger scale as a Cormyrean citizen, noblewoman, and member of the House of Lev. However, she will not follow these obligations blindly, and will stick by her personal code – as well as occasionally follow her own desires, such as when she defied her father and began her career as an adventurer. Emilia is devoted to her close friends in the Arrowheads, and will usually back them in their chosen courses of action – as long as she is allowed to complain about it a bit.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Emilia is a fast learner and, thanks to a wealth of accessible knowledge and free time in her youth, has become proficient in a variety of pursuits. She is an adept fencer and melee combatant despite her small frame, fairly experienced at pursuits such as chess and painting (despite her claims to the contrary), and is well versed in topics such as history, statecraft, and money management, the latter of which has been particularly indispensable for the Arrowheads. Emilia also possesses a dry sense of humour and has a notable wit, though she occasionally tends to hide it.

Although nimble by human standards, Emilia is physically weak, causing her occasional issues in melee combat. She can also struggle somewhat with improvisation, and doesn’t tend to excel when put on the spot unless she’s well-versed in a topic. Emilia feels uncomfortable lying and tends to do a poor job of it. Though she can be a very eloquent speaker when sufficiently prepared, she can struggle when things don’t go according to plan.

Likes & Dislikes

Reading, both fiction and non-fiction, is Emilia’s favourite pastime. She especially loves Cormyrean literature, and a book can usually be found on her person at any given time. She enjoys learning new skills and facts, even those she has little use for. Some of her favourite book topics are history and statecraft – though secretly her favourite book is the romance novel A Scandal in Suzail. Her other favourite pastimes include fencing, chess, stargazing, and painting. While she may not always show it, she very much appreciates the company of friends, though she can be uncomfortable around strangers.

Emilia’s favourite colours are black and gold, the colours of House Lev. She has a notable sweet tooth and will also happily stomach bitter foods, but dislikes foods that are very sour or salty. Her favourite food is marzipan, to the complete confusion of her friends in the Arrowheads. Emilia is also quite fond of alcohol, with gin and red wine specially being favourites, though she is also developing a taste for Mintarn almond brandy since moving to Waterdeep.

Emilia, like most Cormyreans, is extremely fond of cats – like most Cormyreans she also considers dogs principally ‘working animals’, and is somewhat baffled that people in Waterdeep keep them in their homes instead of in a barn. Her passions for history and swordplay have also intersected into a fascination with historical or unusual swords, and she possesses a growing collection of bladed weapons.

Emilia is supportive of the rule of law, and disapproves of crime – the fact that some of her best friends are unrepentant thieves is a source of embarrassment. She is also quite self-conscious and doesn’t like drawing much attention to herself in most situations. Her greatest fear is public humiliation. Having grown up during the wars of 1484-86 DR and as an avid student of history, Emilia is also distrustful of Sembia, viewing it as a duplicitous enemy to her home of Cormyr despite the latter's conciliatory intentions and disapproving of its plutocracy, corruption, and bigotry.

Virtues & Personality perks

Emilia’s strongest virtues are her intelligence, loyalty, and diligence. She is a fast learner who typically thinks things through and approaches problems through reason. Emilia is also a very hard and tenacious worker and goes to significant efforts to ensure things run smoothly and effectively. Finally, Emilia is a loyal friend and ally who will stick up for those she trusts even to her own detriment, though that trust can be slightly slow to manifest.

Vices & Personality flaws

Emilia holds herself to unreasonable standards and has fairly low self-esteem. Consequently she is often overly self-conscious and modest to her own detriment, and can be reluctant to take initiative. Emilia is also quite stubborn and can come across as haughty or judgemental. She is sometimes poor at adapting to changing circumstances, with Enna Liadon once claiming she ‘fears change’.

Social

Religious Views

Emilia follows the Faerûnian Pantheon as typical for most humans of Faerûn. Like many in Cormyr, Emilia is particularly devoted to Tymora, the goddess of good fortune. She regularly prays to Tymora both at home and in temples, and customarily leaves a glass of whatever alcohol she is drinking out for the goddess.

Social Aptitude

While not necessarily entirely unconfident in social situations, and more than capable of holding a conversation, Emilia is typically self-conscious around others and somewhat introverted. Well-versed in etiquette, Emilia is most comfortable in more formal scenarios and can struggle to act informally. She typically does not wish to be the centre of attention, and can become uncomfortable when too many pairs of eyes are on her.

While she usually tries to conduct herself with tact and decorum, Emilia has a sharp tongue which she sometimes has difficulty controlling. While she is capable of being persuasive, she is not much of a "smooth-talker," usually appealing to facts and reasoning rather than attempting to sway people. Emilia is somewhat uncomfortable with the prospect of lying to people, and often does a poor job when she does do so.

Mannerisms

Emilia usually attempts to stay polite but somewhat reserved in general conversations, an endeavour which is sometimes undermined by her sharp tongue. While she is not malicious or even intentionally rude, she is not averse to making dry comments. Emilia makes an effort to be composed in her daily life, and consequently tends to express herself quite subtly. She rarely if ever shows her teeth, causing her smiles to appear quite wry, and usually expresses exasperation more verbally than physically. However, Emilia can be very expressive when her composure is broken, which people such as Sariel Liadon have little difficulty doing. Her eyes tend to widen dramatically when surprised, and she tends to deeply blush when embarassed. Those close to the Arrowheads are very familiar with the sound of Emilia's flustered 'What?' when she is baffled by one of her colleagues' course of action, and may be unaware that those less close to the Arrowheads probably consider her quite aloof.

Hobbies & Pets

Emilia's hobbies tend towards the cerebral. Her favourite activity since childhood has been reading, and she still has a voracious appetite for new literature. She can typically be seen with a book whenever she has any downtime. Emilia also enjoys painting, especially landscapes, although she does not consider her works particularly impressive. Like her friends Sariel Liadon and Nathxena Fey, Emilia also enjoys stargazing, though she can get wrapped up in identifying constellations and star motions and spend less time appreciating the natural beauty.

Emilia also has an interest in swordplay, and continues to practise fencing as a hobby. In addition, she enjoys studying and collecting rare or unusual swords, often showing off the most interesting finds to fellow weapons enthusiast Arafiel Selthi.

Emilia's one pet in her lifetime has been her cat Chestnut, who arrived as a stray when she was a young child and accompanied her throughout her time at Lev's Keep. Following Chestnut's passing in 1491 DR, Emilia has had no pets, although she would probably be happy to adopt any stray cat that somehow ended up visiting her room.

History

"Sariel's one of the most wonderful people I've ever met. Gods, I hope she never hears this."
— Emilia Leveva

Emilia and Sariel met in early 1494 DR in a tavern in Waterdeep. Sariel's other friends were busy that night, so she decided to strike up a conversation with who she thought the most attractive person in the room was - which happened to be Emilia (Emilia drinking red wine also helped). They talked for the entire evening, and ended up spending the next day together as well.

Sariel kept in close contact with Emilia, and after the founding of the Arrowheads, asked the human to join. Emilia accepted, and has since been one of the core five members of the group.

Nicknames & Petnames

Sariel's nickname for Emilia - and the name she prefers to call her - is Emmy. On the other hand, Emilia does not use any nicknames for Sariel, preferring to use her full name.

Shared Acquaintances

As members of the Arrowheads, both Sariel and Emilia are close friends with Valna Mellerelel, Nathxena Fey, and Enna Liadon. They are also friends with Aym Twinhorn and Zelifarn, associates of the Arrowheads.

Emilia and Zelifarn were introduced to each other by their mutual acquaintance, Sariel Liadon. They quickly bonded over their mutual love of poetry, but were hampered by the fact that Zelifarn's lair is difficult to access at the bottom of Deepwater Harbor. For some time, Emilia was only able to travel there with Sariel's aid. Eventually, she learned a safe path to the dragon's lair, and is now able to visit him more regularly.

History

Emilia and Nathxena met when they were introduced by Sariel Liadon in early 1494 DR. Emilia later joined the Arrowheads, again after an invitation by Sariel Liadon. Since Emilia's joining, her and Nathxena have been on numerous adventures together - usually with others, but sometimes just the two of them.

Nicknames & Petnames

Nathxena often refers to Emilia as "Em". While Emilia usually prefers to refer to everyone by their full first name, when she is either very very casual or very very flustered she may refer to Nathxena as simply 'Xena'.

Relationship Reasoning

The basis of Emilia's and Nathxena's relationship is built on the foundation of the Arrowheads. While they didn't get along at first, them constantly talking to each other over the course of several months and Emilia discovering Nathxena's more intellectual hobbies has deepened their relationship a surprising amount.

Commonalities & Shared Interests

While Nathxena has some innate drow magic, she and Emilia often bond of the fact that they are the only two members of the Arrowheads not trained in magic.
