Emilia Leveva

"Emmy's always ready with a riposte, even when she doesn't have her sword on her."
— Sariel Liadon
Emilia Dragomira Sergeyeva Leveva (born 27 Flamerule 1473) is a human woman and adventurer hailing from the Cormyrean hinterlands. Originally from the Lev noble family in Cormyr, she absconded from their estate in the Stormhorns to seek adventure. She is now a core member of the Arrowheads adventuring group, located in Waterdeep.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Emilia has a relatively short and slender frame compared to the average human, but her slight build belies her fitness and athletic ability. She is very limber and surprisingly durable considering her small stature, but after years of exercise she still struggles to perform feats of strength at even an average level. Emilia also suffers from severe against-the-rule astigmatism, and requires corrective lenses to properly focus her vision.

Apparel & Accessories

Emilia's wardrobe may be best described as a compromise between her desire for practicality and her love of noble fineries. She almost exclusively wears comfortable and unrestrictive shirts and trousers in muted colours, yet these practical garments are typically adorned with ruffles and frills and made from high-end materials such as silk or velvet. The only purely decorative element of Emilia's general wardrobe is the silk jabot, which she nevertheless nearly always wears. Her only staple 'accessory' is her spectacles, which she requires due to her astigmatism. Despite her flair for fineries, Emilia generally prefers to dress modestly and avoid drawing too much attention to her physical features, much to the confusion of some of her adventuring partners.

While adventuring, Emilia is typically clad in armour. Her standard set is a relatively light (for solid steel), black half-plate with an ornate gold pattern. In general, Emilia preferences light or medium armour with some level of maneuvrability, preferring to dodge or deflect blows where possible. To provide a modicum of comfort Emilia typically wears simple thermal underclothes under her protective gear, an outfit she also prefers to practice her fencing in.

Emilia particularly dislikes being cold, and so in colder seasons or climates preferences warmth over all else in her wardrobe. In addition to wearing more layers and covering up with fur coats, she aims to cover as many extremeties as possible, donning gloves, fur boots, a fur hat, and a large scarf. While these additions may sometimes hinder her both in and out of combat, she considers these hindrances preferable to the cold.

Emilia additionally owns a few very extravagant and impractical ballgowns and accompanying accessories, that she only wears on very special (and very formal) occasions. It is only for these 'ballgown events' that she drops any concerns for her outfit's practicality and focuses entirely on fashion, and may consequently look near unrecognisable. With how rarely such events actually take place in the life of an adventurer, few if any of even her close friends have actually seen these outfits, which otherwise stay well out of anyone's view.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Born in Lev's Keep to Baron Sergey Levev and Eyrika Bagryany, the sister of a promising Cormyrean 'frontier baron' whose royal charter was stripped days before Emilia's birth (when it was revealed that his allegedly prospering frontier town was in fact deserted). Her mother reportedly died in childbirth, and Emilia was wet-nursed.

A daughter in the House of Lev was unprecedented, and Emilia's small frame led her father to quickly deem her unfit for the typical martial education pursued by the House. With the lion's share of the House's resources placed on Sergey's energetic heir Ivan, Emilia was often left to her own devices.

The Stormhorns can be a treacherous place, and not a great spot to raise a daughter. Emilia didn't get to leave the house much, and had to find ways to keep herself occupied. Like most nobles, she was taught to read at a young age, and soon became a voracious consumer of books. Her great-grandfather Nikolay, always more of an administrator than a warrior - despite having the strongest blood ties to Lev the Axe - had amassed quite a library in the manor, so Emilia was reading fairly advanced treatises on history and administration from a young age. Reading quickly became a passion of hers, and on the rare occasions she was able to leave Lev's Keep and accompany her father to Suzail she'd always be on the lookout for new literature, both fiction and non-fiction.

Despite the heavy restrictions placed on her comings and goings, Emilia was able to occasionally sneak out of Lev's Keep and explore the Stormhorns. This led to her developing somewhat of a love for adventure, but her ability to sneak out diminished as she grew older. She also developed a love of chivalry and tales of the Purple Dragon Knights, who rode across the kingdom to defend the innocent.

The Stormhorns can be a treacherous place, so while Emilia didn't recieve a full martial education she was taught how to defend herself. The axe, the standard weapon of the House of Lev, was too heavy for her, so she was instead trained with daggers and shortswords. Dagger-throwing became a favourite idle activity of hers - she would often engage herself physically by throwing daggers at a target while reading, and it turned out doing this for a few years made her very good at hitting targets even when otherwise preoccupied. She also came across a book on fencing and quickly became interested: here was a weapon that relied more on techniques and tactics than it did on brute strength or perfect reflexes. She was able to convince her father to buy her a rapier for her own protection, and spent a lot of time practicing fencing. There wasn't really anyone around to spar with: while her brother Ivan was happy to engage her, he was far more of an axeman, and lacked the fancy manoeuvres necessary to pose much of a challenge.

While Emilia was capable of explaining precisely how she intended to win a fight, her execution often left much to be desired. She was eventually able to convince her father to hire her a fencing instructor after much pestering. The man he selected was Khezeir, a master swordsman who had won some renown fighting in the Purple Dragons. Khezeir was known as a harsh and relentless trainer who did not ease up against less proficient sparring partners, and Sergey hoped a few quick defeats at his hand would demoralise Emilia into giving up the hobby. Unfortunately for him, Emilia was galvanized by her defeats and Khezeir's critiques, and her instructor was determined to fix her sloppy execution. After just a few years of gruelling training, Emilia was able to execute the advanced techniques she could so fluently describe.

It was on her eighteenth birthday that Emilia decided to leave. She was an adult now, and her boredom and innate curiosity had triumphed over her timidness. She wanted to explore the world. Of course, it's not quite as easy as just leaving. As a scion of the House of Lev, she was answerable to her father, who hoped he could marry her off to increase the House's social standing, much to her chagrin. Unluckily for her father, the House of Lev remains very much on the periphery of the Cormyrean nobility. Maybe some prestigious noblewomen could be persuaded into marrying his handsome and energetic son, but it would take a desperate nobleman to go for his bookish, uncooperative daughter. Still, Sergey did not relent. Eventually Emilia confided in her brother Ivan, who agreed to help her escape the Keep and play ignorant as to her location. With Ivan's help the plan went off without a hitch, and Emilia was in control of her own destiny.

On her own for the first time in her life, Emilia quickly found employment as an adventurer. Due to her noble status, she was able to avoid needing peacebonds on her weapons. Also due to her noble status, she was concerned that her father was attempting to track her down, so she kept her distance from the Stormhorns. For several years, she found odd jobs mostly around the King's Forest (including more than one run-in with orc bands prowling the area). She eventually decided on a change of scenery, a better work-life balance, and to better avoid her father's trackers - one of which was her former fencing trainer. She made her way to Waterdeep, where her saved-up gold was enough to sustain her for some time. In 1494 DR, she joined the Arrowheads adventuring group.

Education

Emilia recieved a basic education like most nobles, although she was often left to her own devices. She learned to read at a young age, and spent much of her childhood and adolescence in the family's library, picking up on a bevy of historical information and administrative techniques. Alongside her formal and informal studies, Emilia received intense fencing training which led to her becoming especially proficient with a rapier. She remains a quick and effective study, and has ample time to practice her administrative and combative skills within the Arrowheads.

Employment

Born to a well-off noble family, Emilia had little need for employment during her youth. After absconding from Lev's Keep, Emilia worked for several years as a freelance adventurer in Western Cormyr, where her status as a noble and a solo adventurer allowed her to bypass many of the Cormyrean legal restrictions on the profession. After journeying to Waterdeep, Emilia found work in the Arrowheads adventuring group. As well as participating in adventures, she acts as a planner and de facto secretary for the group, performing most of the administrative duties that were simply not being done before she joined.
"The Arrowheads wouldn't be around without Emilia. I mean, we'd probably still be adventuring, but I'm pretty sure we didn't officially exist until she started doing the paperwork."
— Nathxena Fey

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

While Emilia is at heart a good person, and strives to uphold and maintain the rule of law, she is mostly motivated by curiosity and personal improvement. She adventures because it is engaging and exciting, and because her curiosity cannot be sated - helping those in need is merely an added bonus. At the same time, she is very responsible and considers herself bound by her obligations, prioritising them over her own whims or wishes. Emilia is not particularly motivated by money, but is also not so naïve as to not appreciate an income. If someone was interested in recruiting her for a mission, they would be best off talking about the potential experiences instead of the potential profits.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Emilia is proficient in a wide variety of fields typically associated with nobility, such as fencing, statecraft, money management, and the study of war. She has a good memory and is capable of learning new skills quickly when she applies herself. In addition, her wit and her dagger skills are notable.

Although nimble, Emilia is physically weak. She struggles with improvisation, is easily flustered, and isn't great when put on the spot unless she's well-versed in a topic. This also leads to her being bad at lying. Although she's a very good speaker when prepared, she struggles when things go off-track.

Likes & Dislikes

Emilia's favourite colour is black, coincidentally the colour of House Lev. She dislikes foods that are too sour or too salty, but has a taste for bitterness - her favourites are bittersweet foods like grapefruit or almonds. Her favourite drink is red wine, although she has developed quite the taste for Mintarn almond brandy since moving to Waterdeep

Emilia has a love of reading, and prefers a good writing style over any specific genre. She enjoys learning new skills and facts, even ones she has little use for. Her hobbies include fencing, stargazing, Dragonchess, and poetry, although she's unlikely to admit to the last one. While she may not always show it, she very much appreciates the company of friends, although she can be uncomfortable around strangers.

Emilia is supportive of the rule of law, and dislikes criminals - the fact some of her best friends are thieves is a source of embarrassment. She is quite self-conscious and doesn't like drawing too much attention to herself in most situations. Her greatest fear is public humiliation, although she's not too fond of big insects either.

Virtues & Personality perks

Emilia's strongest virtues are her intelligence and diligence. She's analytical, refuses to jump to conclusions, and doesn't let existing knowledge cloud her perceptions of new information. She's also a fast learner. Finally, Emilia can be a loyal friend, albeit one that that can be slightly slow to trust.

Vices & Personality flaws

Emilia is very self-conscious. She can be overly cautious, leading to her being slow to act or take the initative at times. Even though she's tried to adapt to a life outside castles and ballrooms, she occasionally comes off as pretentous or haughty - albeit inadvertently. Emilia is also mildly cynical, and can be described as neurotic.

Social

Social Aptitude

While not necessarily unconfident in social situations, and more than capable of holding a conversation, Emilia is typically self-conscious around others and somewhat introverted. Well-versed in etiquette, Emilia is most comfortable in more formal scenarios and can struggle to act informally. She doesn't particularly enjoy being the center of attention, but will not go to lengths to avoid it either. While she usually tries to conduct herself with tact and decorum, Emilia has a sharp tongue which she sometimes has difficulty controlling. While she is capable of being persuasive, she is not much of a "smooth-talker," usually appealing to facts and reasoning rather than attempting to sway people. Emilia prefers not to lie to people, and often does a poor job when she does do so.

Mannerisms

Emilia usually attempts to stay polite but somewhat reserved in general conversations, an endeavour which is sometimes undermined by her sharp tongue. While she is not malicious or even intentionally rude, she is often prone to dry or sarcastic comments. Emilia makes an effort to be composed in her daily life, and consequently tends to express herself quite subtly. She rarely if ever shows her teeth, causing her smiles to appear quite wry, and usually expresses exasperation more verbally than physically. However, Emilia can be very expressive when her composure is broken, which people such as Sariel Liadon have little difficulty doing. Her eyes tend to widen dramatically when surprised, and she tends to deeply blush when embarassed. Those close to the Arrowheads are very familiar with the sound of Emilia's flustered 'What?' when she is baffled by one of her colleagues' course of action, and may be unaware that those less close to the Arrowheads probably consider her quite aloof.

Hobbies & Pets

Emilia's hobbies tend towards the cerebral. Her favourite activity since childhood has been reading, and she still has a voracious appetite for new literature. She can typically be seen with a book whenever she has any downtime. Emilia also enjoys painting, especially landscapes, although she does not consider her works particularly impressive. Like her friends Sariel Liadon and Nathxena Fey, Emilia also enjoys stargazing, though she can get wrapped up in identifying constellations and star motions and spend less time appreciating the natural beauty.

Unlike most of her colleagues in the Arrowheads, Emilia does not engage in physical pursuits as a hobby. While she does ensure she gets frequent exercise, she does it for her physical wellbeing and gets little to no enjoyment out of it.

History

"Sariel's one of the most wonderful people I've ever met. Gods, I hope she never hears this."
— Emilia Leveva

Emilia and Sariel met in early 1494 DR in a tavern in Waterdeep. Sariel's other friends were busy that night, so she decided to strike up a conversation with who she thought the most attractive person in the room was - which happened to be Emilia (Emilia drinking red wine also helped). They talked for the entire evening, and ended up spending the next day together as well.

Sariel kept in close contact with Emilia, and after the founding of the Arrowheads, asked the human to join. Emilia accepted, and has since been one of the core five members of the group.

Nicknames & Petnames

Sariel's nickname for Emilia - and the name she prefers to call her - is Emmy. On the other hand, Emilia does not use any nicknames for Sariel, preferring to use her full name.

Shared Acquaintances

As members of the Arrowheads, both Sariel and Emilia are close friends with Valna Mellerelel, Nathxena Fey, and Enna Liadon. They are also friends with Aym Twinhorn and Zelifarn, associates of the Arrowheads.

"Hello, small friend! Do you need help breathing again?"
— Zelifarn

Emilia and Zelifarn were introduced to each other by their mutual acquaintance, Sariel Liadon. They quickly bonded over their mutual love of poetry, but were hampered by the fact that Zelifarn's lair is difficult to access at the bottom of Deepwater Harbor. For some time, Emilia was only able to travel there with Sariel's aid. Eventually, she tried travelling there on her own, but drowned in the process. Zelifarn was able to resucitate her, and she started a conversation like nothing ever happened. Even though Emilia can't quite make it to Zelifarn's lair on her own, she gets close enough to alert the bronze dragon that she'll shortly need resucitation.

History

Emilia and Nathxena met when they were introduced by Sariel Liadon in early 1494 DR. Emilia later joined the Arrowheads, again after an invitation by Sariel Liadon. Since Emilia's joining, her and Nathxena have been on numerous adventures together - usually with others, but sometimes just the two of them.

Nicknames & Petnames

Emilia does not call anyone by a nickname, and calls Nathxena by her full name. Nathxena, on the other hand, often refers to Emilia as "Em".

Relationship Reasoning

The basis of Emilia's and Nathxena's relationship is built on the foundation of the Arrowheads. While they didn't get along at first, them constantly talking to each other over the course of several months and Emilia discovering Nathxena's more intellectual hobbies has deepened their relationship a surprising amount.

Commonalities & Shared Interests

While Nathxena has some innate drow magic, she and Emilia often bond of the fact that they are the only two members of the Arrowheads not trained in magic.

Emilia and Esvele met at a formal function in mid 1494 DR. Although Esvele was unhappy at being forced to attend yet another function for her family, Emilia managed to brighten her day somewhat. They now occasionally meet at functions when the opportunity presents itself. However, Emilia does not know that Esvele's secret identity is that of the Black Viper.

Special Equipment. Emilia wields a frost brand rapier and a +1 dagger (accounted for in her statistics). She wears a periapt of wound closure.
Unexpected Resolve. While a creature friendly to Emilia that she can see is affected by a condition, Emilia gains advantage on saving throws against that condition.
Medium Armor Master. Emilia can add 3 Dexterity to her AC while wearing medium armor rather than 2, and does not have disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks from wearing it.
Sentinel. Creatures provote opportunity attacks from Emilia even if they take the Disengage action before leaving her reach. In addition, when Emilia hits a creature with an opportunity attack, the creature’s speed becomes 0 for the rest of the turn.
Action Surge (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). After taking one action on her turn, Emilia can take one additional action.
Maneuvers (1/Turn). When Emilia hits with a melee weapon attack, she can choose to apply a maneuver to that attack. The attack deals an additional 4 (1d8) damage, and Emilia chooses one of the following effects.

  • Disarming Attack. The target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or drop an object it is holding of Emilia's choice. The object lands at its feet.
  • Distracting Strike. The next attack roll against the target by an attacker other than Emilia has advantage if the attack is made before the start of Emilia's next turn.
  • Feinting Attack. Emilia gains advantage on her next attack against the target. The advantage is lost if not used on the same turn she gains it.
  • Trip Attack. The target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. Creatures Huge and above are immune to this effect.

  • Actions

Multiattack. Emilia makes four attacks, three with her rapier and one with her dagger.
Frost Brand Rapier. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8+3) piercing and 3 (1d6) cold damage.
Dagger +1. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d4+4) piercing damage.

    Bonus Actions

Commander's Strike. Emilia chooses one friendly creature within 30 feet of her that can see and hear her. The creature can immediately use its reaction to make one weapon attack, adding 4 (1d8) to the attack's damage roll.

    Reactions

Riposte. When a creature misses Emilia with a melee attack, she can use her reaction to make a melee weapon attack against the creature. On a hit, she adds an additional 4 (1d8) damage to the attack roll.
