Claria Goldwood

Claria Goldwood (born 18 Hammer, 1475 DR) is a human woman hailing from the city of Baldur's Gate. Born to a wealthy merchant family, she was the third child and second daughter. With her older siblings set to inherit the family business, her parents allowed her to pursue her own dreams. After meeting the wood elf adventurer Valna Mellerelel in 1492 DR, Claria decided to become an adventurer herself.

While not particularly skilled in any one field, Claria has knowledge of a very wide variety of skills. Growing up, she was tutored in martial combat, mentored by a wizard, learned etiquette from nobles, and had several educational encounters with thieves. She prefers the sword and shield, but knows how to use just about anything. In 1494 DR, she moved to the city of Waterdeep after learning it was more friendly to adventurers than her hometown of Baldur's Gate.

Personal history

Claria was born in the city of Baldur's Gate on 18 Hammer, 1475 DR, to a moderately wealthy family. She was the third child and second daughter of her parents, and as such, was not set to inherit the family business. Growing up, Claria never lacked for anything, as her parents provided for her completely. She read many books, but particularly liked tales of adventurers, knights, and wizards.

As Claria grew older, she wanted more and more to become an adventurer one day. However, she couldn't decide whether to focus on fighting, magic, or even thievery. As such, she tried to learn everything. She convinced her parents to hire both a martial instructor and a wizard to teach her. Although they were apprehensive about their daughter going adventuring, they felt she would do so with or without their help.

What her parents didn't approve of was Claria's repeated excursions to the Lower City in her late teens, in order to meet and learn from members of The Guild. At first, she was robbed repeatedly, but eventually she managed to get through to a number of members and learned from them.

In 1490 DR, Claria ran into a young wood elf named Valna Mellerelel while walking around the Lower City. While Valna was somewhat awkward, Claria took a liking to her and invited her (and her brother) to stay at her parents' villa. Despite not being consulted about the new guests, Claria's parents accepted the wood elves into their home.

While the Mellerelel siblings were staying at her house, Claria occasionally went with them to Candlekeep and the Cloakwood. When they left in late 1492 DR, Claria wanted to go with them - but her parents finally objected. They believed she was still too young, at the age of 17, to go adventuring. They insisted she wait until she was at least 19 before departing, and Claria reluctantly agreed to their terms. In the intervening year, she continued her learning in the arts of sword, stealth, and magic.

On her 19th birthday in 1494 DR, Claria bid farewell to her parents and siblings, and joined a caravan heading north to Waterdeep. They gave her some money and equipment to help her on her journey, but for the most part, she was on her own. After a number of difficult weeks as a caravan guard, she arrived in Waterdeep, and found a place to stay in the Dock Ward.

Claria spent some time acting as a bodyguard, then a waitress, unable to find any employment as a solo adventurer. However, her luck changed in mid-Tarsakh, when she managed to run into Valna Mellerelel yet again. Valna, by this point, was a skilled adventurer and member of the elite Arrowheads group. While Claria was still too unskilled to join, Valna helped her find opportunities in Waterdeep for adventuring.

Social Aptitude

While extroverted and capable of conversation, Claria prefers to let other people speak if they want to. She is very polite and positive, preferring to assume the best of people. Many of her friends have described her as 'mellow', cheerful, and content. She enjoys simply being around her friends, even if they aren't talking. Despite all this, she is socially comfortable, and can hold in-depth conversations if people want her to.
