Aarakocra Species in Faerûn | World Anvil

Aarakocra

Aarakocra are a race of avian humanoids. They are capable of flight, and have wingspans often exceeding twenty feet in width. Suspected to originally hail from the Elemental Plane of Air, the origins of their existence in Faerûn are debated. Some scholars believe they simply transited between the planes and settled, while others believe they evolved from or were created by the Aearee-Krocaa creator race about 30,000 years ago. Regardless of their exact origin, the first aarakocra appeared in Anchorome and Maztica. They eventually crossed to Faerûn in 418 DR, and settled in a number of locations.

Aarakocra tend to resemble birds in their form, such as eagles, hawks, and parrots. In addition to their wide wings, they possess humanoid arms, which they can use to manipulate tools. Their legs end in sharp talons that some aarakocra learn to use in a similar fashion to hands. Aarakocra also have significantly lighter bones than most humanoids, being hollow to allow for easier flight. However, these hollow bones are also fragile and easily broken.

Most aarakocra enjoy living communally in their isolated nests, which are typically built in tall forests or on mountains. Aarakocra also tend to be very claustrophobic, becoming panicked in any place they cannot fly (such as caves or alleyways).

Flight. Because of your wings, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed. You can't use this flying speed if you're wearing medium or heavy armor.
Talons. You have talons that you can use to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with them, the strike deals 1d6 + your Strength modifier slashing damage, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Wind Caller. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the gust of wind spell with this trait, without requiring a material component. Once you cast the spell with this trait, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have of 2nd level or higher.
Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for when you cast gust of wind with this trait (choose when you select this race).
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common, Aarakocra, and Auran.
