Basic Currency values in Faerin | World Anvil

Basic Currency values

Coins in the lands of Faerin come in a number of sizes and denominations. What helps, however, is to understand the value of the metal that makes up the coins, and the standard sizes coins are minted in. Your "normal" coin of the realm is based on a weight of 70 grains, or 4.5359 ounces. This puts 100 coins to a pound for the weight of currency.   Copper is the coin of the people, and most transactions will be done in copper coins. Copper is valued at a twelveth of Silver. So 12 Copper coins of normal weight are worth 1 Silver coin of normal weight. Silver is valued at a twentieth of Gold, so 20 Silver is worth a single Gold coin. It would take 240 Copper coins to equal a single normal weight Gold coin. These weights are the bases of all trade in Faerin.

Tin, Bronze, and Copper are the most common coin types used in Human exchange. These three metals are by far the most prevalent of the coins you will find, and they come in a lot of shapes and sizes. Often times merchants will cut a coin in half, quarters, or even parts of eight; to make the change for a transaction. If the people of an area use these partial pieces a lot, they get minted as whole coins worth the value of a half coins, our even double coins.   Silver, Electrum, and Gold are worth more, but uncommon in distribution and used in bigger transactions. These coins are more commonly used by wealthy merchants and nobles.   It is, however, the metal in the coin and not the coin itself that generates trade and commerce. Many merchants will weight the coins to ensure they are the correct weight for the value. Countries who have shaved off value or do not use pure metals will often time find their currency of little use outside their towns.
Note: Dwarven merchants are very picky about the quality of metals. It is advised to not buy while using mixed metals like Bronze or Electrum as they will often devalue it without the ability to know the correct composition of said metal. They will also rarely except Tin coins used by the human nations.
