Facing Oblivion

The world never got better after the world wars, political tensions rose and eventually the entire world was involved in a third global conflict which eventually lead to the near destruction of humankind. No one is exactly sure when the war ended because everything descended into chaos and there weren't enough people left to care. During this time a greater threat to humankind was created, the ghouls, who were the tipping point in the end of civilisation. Ghouls were introduced about 30 years before the start of the book. Due to the long war the climate of the world is unbalanced and the ground is poisoned. But life is slowly bouncing back. There is limited plant growth in many areas towards the South but the north is more hospitable and has a more established ecosystem.
