Personal history

Domesday Book records Eadric Wild holding six manors in Shropshire and Herefordshire at the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066. He may have held more - 52 manors in these counties are associated with the name Edric or Eadric, but it's impossible to say whether they refer or Wild or another Eadric.   In 1086 he is recorded as holding three: Bourton in Shropshire, and Cuple and Laysters in Herefordshire.   Eadric's rebellion is mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, in Orderic Vitialis' History of Normandy and England, and in John of Worcester's Chronicle.   Following his refusal to submit to Norman rule, Eadric was attacked by Norman forces from Hereford commanded by Richard fitz Scrob.   In 1067 he allied with Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, Prince of Gwynedd and Powys for an unsuccessful attack on Hereford Castle. In 1069, once more in alliance with Gwynedd, and joined by English rebels from Cheshire, he burnt Shrewsbury and attacked its castle.   Eadric and his allies were defeated by King William at Stafford late in 1169. He was captured in the battle by Ralph de Mortimer and improsioned. In 1070 he submitted to King William, and he fought for William in expeditions in Scotland and Maine in 1072.
