Ykona Prose in Ezohr | World Anvil

Ykona

Finally, it came to pass that in a small village in the Heartlands, that there was a young mortal named Ykona. She was a teacher, but she never stopped learning, always asking questions of those whose crafts she did not know. She was much loved by her fellow villagers, and she loved the gods more than any of them. Each day, she ventured farther into the forest, for she insisted that she should never pray in the same place twice, and it offered her an opportunity to explore the woods.   One day, however, in search of a new place to pray, she came upon a cottage. Curious as to why such an establishment was built so far away from any other civilization, she investigated and found it to be the home of a lone witch. Angry that she had trespassed, the witch demanded to know what she was doing. When Ykona replied that she was only curious and meant no harm, the witch grew even more furious and cursed her, such that she would always ask questions, but at the end of each day would forget all she learned.   Confused by her new existence, Ykona returned to her village. She asked and asked, and she forgot, and she asked and asked again. Eventually, in search of something to break the curse, she and her friend set out into the world.   In the world, Ykona asked and asked, and every time she learned something, even if she had learned it a thousand times before, she delighted in it. Every day, she found new questions to ask, and every day she found a new love for the dragon gods. She traveled everywhere, eventually forgetting about her quest to break the curse, and instead only bringing her questions into the world.   Idon saw this, and recognized her dedication. One day, he decided to seek her out. He asked her why she continued asking all her questions when she knew she would only forget.   "Even if I forget, those I ask will remember," she told him with a smile. "Whether I make them consider a new perspective, or just make them smile by asking about something they're interested in, it's worth it for them."   Idon was so moved by her response that he decided to bless Ykona. He removed the curse from her, and in doing so imparted some of his divinity onto her. Much like his mother and siblings, she took the form of a great dragon and her mind clarified.   From then on, Ykona never forgot anything she learned. And though she'd been given divinity, she never lost her curiosity, nor her love for humanity. She often walked among the mortals, learning from them and sharing her own wisdom.   Thus the last of the gods came to be.
