Angels and Devils VIII

"You could've gone easy on him, you know," Temerity said, pulling a shirt over her head. "He's new. He's learning."   "I was getting the measure of him," Eisna said. "You don't do that by holding back."   "And now he's in the infirmary with a concussion."   Eisna sighed. "I'm sorry." He turned to face her. "They said he'd be fine in a few days. There shouldn't be any lasting damage."   "Still." Temerity sat on the bed and crossed her arms. "He's not ready for that yet."   "I suppose you're probably right." Eisna sat next to her. "It's late."   "Yeah."   Eisna moved back and leaned against the headboard, then smiled a bit. "Are you coming or are you sulking?" He held out an arm.   Temerity looked back at him. She sighed. "I'm not sulking. I'm brooding." She leaned back against his arm and closed her eyes. "And now I'm sleeping."   "I can see that." Eisna pulled the covers up. "Goodnight, Temerity."   Temerity opened her eyes to look up at him. After a moment, she smiled. "Goodnight, Eisna."   Both of them settled into bed and fell asleep as the candles burned out.   Eisna wasn't sure what time it was when he woke up. There was a sharp pain in his side that jolted him awake. It was still dark outside. He looked over and saw Temerity tossing and turning next to him. Her knee was right where his side had been a moment earlier.   "Temerity?" he asked quietly. She didn't wake up. He moved to shake her, then noticed a faint red glow beneath her eyelids. He pulled his hand back and reached over to the bedside table to grab his sword.   He watched her, waiting for her to wake up. His hand stayed on the hilt of his sword. He counted minutes, growing more and more tense as they reached ten.   Nine minutes and sixteen seconds. Temerity's eyes snapped open, and Eisna shoved his sword aside.   "Temerity? It's okay. You're awake."   Her breathing was shallow and quick, but steadied as he reached out and took her hand.   "It's okay. Can you hear me?"   Her hand tightened in his and she nodded. "... I woke you up again. Did I hurt you?"   Eisna shook his head. "Knee to the side. Won't even bruise." He kissed her hand. "They're getting longer."   Temerity said nothing.   "Especially this one. The last one was barely eight minutes. Are you sure we shouldn't talk to your parents about it?"   "I'm sure. They wouldn't help anyway. Probably just call it another blessing."   "Temerity-"   "Just tell me if they get longer than ten minutes. Okay? I'm fine. Really. It's late. I still have training tomorrow." She closed her eyes again.   There was silence for a bit, then Eisna spoke again. "What do we do then?"   "I don't know, Eisna. Maybe nothing. Ten minutes is just a guess."   Eisna went quiet.   "Go back to sleep, okay? We don't have to worry about it yet."
