Adea and Atia

It was thousands of years before new deities were born. Esteemed Chyrlathyn created no more. It wasn't until Volnir's Questions that another came to be.   Volnir, in all his love for esteemed Taleyar's creations, wanted nothing more than to protect them; and yet, as he watched them, he saw that that which destroyed them often came from within their own kind. Distressed by his inability to protect humanity from itself, he went to his sister Zyla, who watched them from afar. "How can I save them?" he asked her.   "You cannot," she told him. "Watch with me." But Volnir, in his love, returned to humanity.   And again, he wanted nothing more than to protect them. He stood between two great armies and let out a mighty roar, and terrified, they let down their blades. Yet elsewhere, another battle raged on, for he could not stop all battles at once.   And so he went to his sister Zyla once more. "How can I save them?" he pleaded.   "You cannot," she told him. "Watch with me." But Volnir saw in the world below a terrible danger, and returned to humanity once more.   Volnir wrapped his dark wings around a small town, shielding them from the eyes of bandits and brigands; and so the bandits and brigands went on to other towns, and looted and pillaged there, for he could not hide all towns at once.   And so he returned to Zyla. "Can I not save them?" he asked in defeat.   "Watch with me," Zyla said again. And this time, he sat with her and watched. He watched all of humanity, their battles, their losses, their triumph, their grief, and their joy. He watched their lives, and when he made to leave urgently to aid them, Zyla gently held him back to continue watching.   He watched their despair, their hope, their curses, and their prayers. He watched their faith.   "Why must I watch this?" he asked miserably. "How will this help me save them?"   "You cannot," Zyla repeated. "You can never save all of them. We do not wield such power. But do you see?" She pointed a claw to one village, where a human knelt at a shrine and prayed for Volnir's protection.   "You cannot save them all," Zyla told him. "But you save as many as you can, and they know as much. They know that you love them, and that gives them hope. And so even if you cannot save all of them, it is not futile to try."   Volnir watched a while longer, and he saw more pray to the gods for help. And as he watched, he too felt hope.   "Thank you," he told Zyla. "Now I see."   Volnir returned to humanity, and when he wished to remind himself of hope, he returned to Zyla, and they sat and watched. At first they sat apart, and then, slowly, they sat closer and closer to one another. And as she watched over the world, when Volnir was away, Zyla watched over him. And then once, when they sat together, they did not watch. Volnir wrapped Zyla in his darkness, and from their union, the young twins were born.   From Zyla's watchful eye and Volnir's love came Adea, who saw as much as her mother and found as much beauty in it as her father. From both near and far, she made art of all the world, capturing its magnificence and grace.   From Zyla's sight and Volnir's desire to protect came Atia, who saw the threats to the world and placed themself as a bulwark between them and all they could hurt, a mighty and unyielding shield.   And so esteemed Chyrlathyn's first grandchildren were born.
