The Kingdom of Nikosia

Structure

The Kingdom of Nikosia is an organized feudal state which operates under the authority of the King as well as the lesser nobility who control the lands beyond the monarchs direct authority. The King holds an elected position where each of the Dukes of Nikosia is granted a single vote with which to choose their next King. The capitol of Nikosia changes each time a different noble family takes on the mantle of King, with the new holder of the title making their own city into the nation's new capitol for the duration of their reign. This shifting of the location of the capitol keeps any one dynasty from being able to accumulate too much power within the nation.   Though the King rules the nation at large, the lands outside his direct domain is managed by his vassals, the different Dukes of Nikosia, and their vassals beneath them. Each noble lord manages their own personal holdings, as well as the affairs of the vassals directly under them. Beneath the nobility, the people of Nikosia live a fairly good life. The founding document of Nikosia, The Promisary Vow, ensures the people of the Kingdom are granted certain inalienable rights, such as freedom of worship, freedom of passion, and freedom of migration. It also outlaws certain, less humane practices like slavery, capital punishment, and unlawful confinement.   Due to having many different cultures and faiths within it's borders, the Kingdom of Nikosia has no single state religion. As Freedom of Religion is a right granted by the Promisary Vow, it's not unlikely for an King to hold a different faith than his predecessor. The most commonly practiced faiths within the nation state include the worship of Valdyr, Domina, Va'tor, Shintora, and Lyros. As their is no state religion, however, the clergy of these faiths hold no institutionalized power within the nation.

Culture

The Kingdom of Nikosia is home to a myriad of different cultures, all united under the common banner of the nation. They are as varied and diverse as the people who live and serve the Kingdom's monarch, and each of them is notable in their own right.   The most common culture found within the Kingdom are those of the Nikosian people, living in the city of Nikos. The Nikosian people are an industrious and determined people who are as welcoming as they are competetive. Nikosians will often engage in friendly competitions and wagers among themselves as well as other outsiders, and as such many competitive sports are quite popular in Nikos, such as chariot races and other such games.

Assets

The Kingdom of Nikosia is rich in both resources and population. Hosting almost a tenth of the world's entire population, the Kingdom of Nikosia has many people whose needs must be catered to. The Kingdom is rich with strategic resources, such as Iron, Copper, and Tin. More over, Nikosia is home to some most well bred horses on all of Eyria.   To feed it's population, the Kingdom makes use of large plots of hardy crops as well as vast herds of sheep and goats. The nation puts great effort into maintaining it's farms and pastures, and invests large amounts of money to pay the wages of the workers. Due to the size of the nation, a vast amount of different crops are grown by the different cities and regions. From carrots, turnips, and beats along the Alpine Coast, to Cabbage, Pumpkins, and Melons near the Summerbreeze Bay.   Most formidible, however, is the Military of Nikosia. Structured in a typical feudal style, highly trained elite knights lead forces of experienced Men-At-Arms and large hosts of levied militia against any threats to the nation. While Nikosia seldom has reason the martial their men to war, their forces often do battle with internal threats to help protect the people of the nation, with bandits and monster both often meeting their end by the sword.

History

In the wake of the Fifth Ravaging, with the northern lands of Eyria thrown into chaos by the march of the Tarrasque, the many scattered city-state of the region found themselves failing to contain centuries old problems once thought trivial due to the complacency about the future. Banditry began to rise, gnoll warbands and goblin hordes swept over unprotected villages, and centaurs migrating from the steppes to the south-east left the whole area on the brink of collapse. In the wake of this calamity, a hero known as Alferic Praxis. Known later as Lord Alferic of Summerhold, the hero gathered several companions and became well known as the greatest hero the world had ever seen, all but single-handedly saving the region from the various threats that caused it to ride on the edge of collapse. Hailing from the city of Nikos, Lord Alferic soon found himself adopted by the cities Royal Family. Taking the throne a few years later, the Hero used the weight of his prestige as well as his own diplomatic skill to unite the various city-states of the region, slowly but surely assembling a coalition of cities to form the nation state now known as the Kingdom of Nikosia.   Before the end of King Alferic's life, he drafted and put into law the Promissory Vow, ensuring the rights of all citizens of the nation even after his reign ended. From there, Nikosia bid farewell to it's first King. Now without the anchor that many thought was the only thing holding their nation together, the fledgling Nation-State entered a period of decline. Several incompetent or otherwise overwhelmed monarchs either tried and failed to keep the nation on course, or took advantage of their station to empower and enrich themselves. It wasn't until the rise of the Mordicalli Dynasty that the nation finally had the firm leadership to get it on track once again.   The Mordicalli dynstasy of the city of Selthora took power in the nation for over two-hundred years, solving many of the nations problems that came in the wake of King Alferic. Even after the dynasty lost power, future monarchs of Nikosia inherited a much stronger nation-state, and since then, Nikosia has only grown stronger with each successive monarch.
