The Strain of Chirurgery in Expedition Demeter | World Anvil

The Strain of Chirurgery

I bring you vigor in this cold dead world. Through my pain, I bring you warmth.

Chirurgury is a strain of Arcana Sanguis that deals with Healing and protection. Learning the strain takes time. The mind set Is unique among other strains as it requires a desperate need to use blood to aid others. The pain is activly sought and a welcome expirience as the pain is part of their power.
Blood is life in this strain and and when a blood mage links their veins with the veins of their allies, the connection sparks a new sense of vigor. They leave their allies revitalized, and relish the stare of wide eyed wonder as any wounds their allows suffer seal themselves and their strength rises like a fire.
In the time of Expedition Demeter, these men and women were doctors who traveled all over to administrator the healing power of blood. The practice continued on into the time of the web and the strain's name, meaning surgery, was chosen to honor this history.

The Power to Heal

Usually casters give their own blood or blood that has been sacrificed to their cause of healing. However, they are more than willing to use the blood of enemies using the other strains. No spell in Chirurgery can be used to harm directly. The pain they cause must their own. it simply won't take effect if its tried.

Blood has been used to heal for ages. The process of healing wounds and applying a shield of sorts around a subject were the first spells to appear in the strain. As time moved on and the field of medicine grew, the concept of using blood to perform more complex healing began to emerge. Sanguimancers have performed operations that no ordinary professional could such as removing organs damaged beyond repair and regrowing them as the cuts seal shut.

Surgical Steel

The need for sanitary equipment is paramount for the more complex procedures the mages of this strain use. Their blades are always sharp and clean and they take great care in preserving the blood they spill. Using the strain requires blood to be pure. Blood that touches the ground could be tainted, pathogens in the blood are just the same. The blood must be healthy and contained if not in use.
system rule
Spells in this strain can only be used by harvested blood that has been either purified or determined to be pure. This blood can be harvested over time in vials and bottles that must be sterile. Every mage with this strain may gain a blade that is incredibly sharp. The blade is sterile and the solution in the sheath keeps it so. Blood spilled by this blade, unless diseased or touches the ground, can be harvested and used for these spells. This is for the mage to continue harvesting and using resources after running out. To avoid redundancy any blood harvested can be purified by taking an action to do so.

Blood Pact

A practitioner has a bond with those they heal and protect. This blood oath grants them the ability to link their veins without focus or thought. Healing and protections happen quicker and tend to be more effective. The blood is invigorating and the more powerful spells can give additional benefits to those with whom the practitioners has a pact.

Thicker Than Water

Blood mages are sympathetic by nature. They tend to see those they protect as more than their role in the group. It is their sworn duty and responsibility to keep their allies alive. They often see their allies as family. Blood is thicker than water and as such, a blood mage is directly tied to the fates of their allies. Their lives literally depend on it.
System Rules
Making a blood pact adds HP to the blood mages pool. Any time a blood mage makes a pact, they may add the characters HP to their own. Should that character die, this HP disappears and an additional 10 points of damage are taken as the blood mage experiences the death of one they consider family.

The Hippocratic Oath

A blood mage of this strain tends to abhor violence. While they can learn other strains to aid in battle, they always have a little resentment of it. Whether this is due to their need to heal or simply a disgust of wasting so much blood is up to the player. They can spread that to enemies as well. Linking veins with an enemy not only opens up the ability to take blood and affect the blood of the enemy but a blood mage can pacify them as well and force them to stand down.
