The Pit Cities of Antarctica

In 2097 in order to solve the worlds growing power problems several world governments gathered to create the Antarctica Global Geothermal Power Plant, the large factory was built over what was believed to be a huge geothermal vent under the ice and a large drill, known as the Lance, was used to burrow deep under the ice and harness this energy. Several of these geothermal plants were built across the icy continent and the power problems were solved.   The plants effectiveness was appreciated but the larger global concern were the apparent destabilizing effects these drills were having on the ice sheet, pieces were falling away, melting, and falling into the pits, thus creating more steam and increasing water levels. This destabilized many nearby areas that were treated with constant flooding and huge waves, problems that were somewhat fixed with the use of Flood Walls. It wasn't until around ten years later that the problem at hand was fixed and artificial wells were created at the bottom of the ocean to fix this rising water crisis. These wells went on to be the structural points of many Spar Cities around 100 years later.   For many years the geothermal factories continued to be used until Ion generators became a common occurrence, at which point in 2306 the final geothermal plant was shut down. Eight years later however the Rapture Virus broke out and with this shortly after the discovery of its vulnerability to the cold. These factories, designed to hold a few hundred people, were now full to triple capacity or more. Soon the mining tools and technologies were taken up once more to create homes within the bore holes, a small infrastructure was already built going a half mile down to perform testing and from these scaffolds homes were built around and into the ice.   These homes were extremely dangerous, the aging factories were not built to hold such a number of people and were supposed to have been deconstructed for safety. Over the years many of these pit cities fell when the drill lances began detaching while others with the right support flourished. Antarctica is still dotted with these now huge pit cities capable of holding thousands at once, the factories above often deconstructed for parts and the safety of its inhabitants.   These pit cities are likely one of the most well developed of anywhere left in the world, their technologies are still up to date with those of the Capital Wars and its construction has gone from ramshackle to professional and sturdy. Many countries outside of Antarctica will not touch the technologies of the Pit cities or their inhabitants, fearing the latent infection may still reside within the ice, leaving much of Antarctica to its new inhabitants.

Demographics

The pits run off an uplifted economic structure built of that of the old world, while most resources are easily attainable due to nanite technology Pitters trade in food and heat. Personal generators are common for all. The higher class lives amongst the farms in the lower pits while those less fortunate are left higher up or in some cases on the surface of the frozen continent.

Government

The Pits were at one point complete anarchy, no leaders or police and crime was rampant. The force that now controls all the pits, known as the Delvers, was a military force utilizing advanced technologies, nobody is actually aware of where this organization origonates, nor where their main base actually is. Some speculate they reside in one of the many collapsed Pit cities while others argue they are super soldiers developed from the war, whatever the case they rule the Pits with reason and logic, though wielding an iron fist over those that would trespass their rights.

Defences

The Pit cities hold an obvious tactical disadvantage in that assaults from the surface are difficult to predict. This is why many Pits hold a security force around the lip of the pit.

Industry & Trade

The Technologies that the Pit cities hold are kept close at hand, many cities hold secrets even their own inhabitants may not be aware of, the cities trade food and weapons between themselves. The biggest export of the country is experimental technology, Delver scientists continue to progress designs to the outside world at a considerable profit though it is commonly believed that they are simply drip feeding the outside world and they know far more than they let on.

Assets

The Pits benefit from many advanced technologies, making few things an issue, their only major concerns are heat and food. Heat requires a constant source of power and cannot be trusted to the standard Ion generators while food requires space to grow, so that too is limited.
