Loxodon

Guildmasters Guide to Ravnica
The humanoid elephants called loxodons are often oases of calm in the busy streets of Marquet's metropolises. They hum or chant in sonorous tones and move slowly or sit in perfect stillness. If provoked to action, loxodons are true terrors- bellowing with rage, trumpeting and flapping their ears. Their serene wisdom, fierce loyalty, and unwavering conviction are tremendous assets to their allies.   Lumbering Giants   Loxodons tower above most other humanoids, standing over 7 feet tall. They have the heads, trunks, tusks, ears, and faces-of elephants, and hulking bipedal bodies covered by thick, leathery skin. Each of their hands has four thick digits, and their feet are the flat-bottomed, oval-shaped feet of elephants. Like that of an elephant, a loxodon's trunk is a useful appendage. In addition to providing a keen sense of smell, the trunk can be used to lift and carry even heavy objects. The trunk can be used to carry both food and liquid to the mouth and can even act as a snorkel.   Gifted Stoneworkers   Loxodons are tireless, patient artisans with an unrivaled intuition about their craft. Although they make nurturing spiritual leaders, their gift for stonework is so ingrained that they are often at a loss when they try to impart that knowledge to others. Among the guilds and factions across Marquet, it primarily falls to loxodons to build the guild's magnificent, cathedral-like arboretum structures.   Relentlessly Loyal   Loxodons believe in the value of community and life. Some find fulfillment in the cause of order by joining religious organizations, guilds, parliaments, archives and other organizations that promote order as a statute. Loxodons believe that the members of a group have a responsibility to look out for each other. Once they have joined a guild or bonded with other individuals in any capacity, loxodons devote themselves to maintaining that bond. They coordinate their efforts and are often willing to sacrifice themselves for the sake of the group. They expect reciprocal loyalty and commitment from the other members of their communities and can be severe in their disappointment when their trust is violated.   LOXODON TRAITS   Your loxodon character has the following racial traits.   Ability Score Increase. Culture and cultural heritage

Loxodon widely worship gods within the nature domain, with the Wildmother being first among those. However, some who live to practice their craft can find affinity with the Allhammer and his realm of creation and artistic expression. Stone lasts for the ages, but so to do the stories told by song. Loxodons commonly practice singing, humming or chanting to tell stories and worship the gods. Self-expression is very important to a loxodon, which results in an amazing diversity of the arts within the Loxodon culture.

Shared customary codes and values

Loyalty.

Common Etiquette rules

Honor the elders. Respect the loyal. Protect the herd.   These can apply to anyone a loxodon deems worthy of respect.

Art & Architecture

The loxodons masterful stonework shows definitive evolution in methodology and practice of the craft over the ages, but to most people it can be difficult to understand the complexities that a loxodon can impart into their artistic stonework.

Coming of Age Rites

Until a Loxodon reaches a mature age (though they reach adulthood around 18, a loxodon isn't considered mature until around 60-80 years old), they are forbidden from leaving the herd unless granted special permission from the Elder Council. The Council believes a loxodon needs to spend however long it takes to truly understand what it means to be loyal. The well being and spiritual growth of the herd as a whole is just as important as that of an individual.

Funerary and Memorial customs

There is an ancient custom usually reserved for when the Matriarch of the herd passes on to the great beyond, though some instances of great heroes or worthy artisans are given a similar departure. Quite simply, upon death the body is taken out to the wilderness by the entire herd and ritualistically burned on a funeral Pyre. The herd joins in unison to sing the "Last Song" in deep harmonic sonorous tones, while using their stonecraft to construct an artistic monument to that loxodon's life. The herd sings until the monument is finished and once the song completes, the herd leaves in total silence until returning home. It is said that when a loxodon dies, it's soul then ascends to the afterlife and beyond to "the Great Migration".

Common Myths and Legends

The Great Migration The elders speak often of this metaphysical journey that all loxodon must take upon passing into the after life. There are many different interpretations of the final destination that change from herd to herd, but they all agree that the migration of their souls must be some small part of the gods grand plan and thus it is taught to the children as fact.

Major organizations

The Wildmother While loxodons are free to worship any god, most Loxodons worship the Wildmother heavily throughout Marquet and beyond.
