Verti of Norwell

Vertixico Ma'agus VaThullin (a.k.a. Vagabond)

"My back was turned at the time, bar work isn't particularly receptive to the idea of surveillance. The man was a drunkard, as any of his friends should attest and it doesn't surprise me that he'd make bets on things like that. The thing is, we don't call it the Frostmist river for nothing..."
— The account of Tyler, Manager of the Riverside Tavern of Khalis"
The Merchant Vagabond Vertixico, or 'Verti' to his friends is an older, though still sprightly dwarf from the lands of Norwell, Belethia. A self proclaimed world traveller, he has taken his small donkey-driven cart laden with goods to countries all over the world. Verti mainly kept his travels to Belethia, but when he got into a racially charged drunken scuffle with some imperial soldiers, he fled to the Velian country of Awn, Reledus.   Verti settled in Dunferreth, where the population of dwarves was highest, and lived happily travelling around Reledus and The Western Isles until one day, he found himself in the riverside tavern of Khalis.   Verti spent a majority of his time sober, though when he started drinking, he found it incredibly difficult to stop. Thus, in the early hours of the morning, the dwarf found himself swaying at the edge of the river by the tavern with a crowd around him having bet his entire pocket that he could cross it... Naked.   The Frostmist river, named as such because of the early morning mists that cast a thin layer of frost over the grasses in the colder mornings isn't particularly wide, no more than 15 feet across. But it is deep enough to come up to the dwarf's chest, and as he submerged his upper body, Verti fell into shock from the cold and very rapidly drowned; his alcohol-addled body too weak to fight off the cold. His last words were; "You have no idea what you're talking about!".   Taking pity on the poor traveller who fell so cruelly just outside of the tavern's doors, the tavern was renamed in Vertixico's honour; becoming known as "The Sunken Norwellan".
"Maybe he would've been fine, but the drink... The sheer amount of drink in his system slowed his pulse, made him colder -as it tends to do-. It seems to me that when he hit the water, the shock caused him to inhale and that was his fate sealed. He's in a better place now, wherever that may be."

Your article makes very good use of the template and decorates the text nicely with quotes – well done. The poor Verti had to die and I like the twist about how he was so susceptible to the cold – positively absurd. If I had one thing to critique, the build up towards the central event – the death – feels a bit slow. On the other hand that of course highly supports weaving the character deep into your own world.
