Dwarf Species in Everus | World Anvil

Dwarf

Dwarves were the first beings to evolve to sentience on Everus.   Dwarven clans are solitary. They settle in mountains, hills and sometimes deserts to get away from the trivialities of modern civilisation. The clan structure revolves around a chief who maintains direct control of their clansmen. These clansmen are generally stout fellows ranging from 3' 6''- 4' 5'' and well groomed.   Beard are a particularly common cultural symbol of dwarves. The length of the beard combined with the quality of it’s design are symbolic of the individual’s nobility, power and superiority. While not always the case, it has been known that the females of certain clans have been capable of growing majestic beards.   Dwarves are territorial and enjoy combat and tactically challenging situations. Dwarven war chiefs are among the most fearsome beings in the world and frequently are able to pull of miracles with small numbers of men.   Dwarves are considered to have been birthed from the earth itself and living up to this is the aspiration of all dwarves everywhere. Being stoic and tough is but a fraction of the responsibility a dwarf bestows upon himself.

Ecology and Habitats

Dwarves are by nature very hardy and resilient thus they can survive in practically every climate, though they prefer tall mountains and rough hills.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Due to breathing the minutely toxic airs of mineshafts and being forced to survive off of the meagre bounties of mountainous terrain, dwarves have an incredibly resilient digestive and respiratory system. Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They can see in dim light up to a range of about sixty feet as clear as if it was day, though their colour perception is hampered by the low-light. It should also be noted that this works by manipulating the small amounts of light in a given area, and is rendered inoperable by complete darkness.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Dwarven first names are usually a collection of hard syllables and tough constanants. Some have specific meanings but not necassarily.   Dwarven surnames are given from the individual's clan and usually are a concatination of two words that represent the clan in question. (i.e. Ogreaxe, WyvernCuller)

Major Organizations

Dwarves organise into clans that rule over a small terittory usually surrounding the geological landmark they are built into.

Beauty Ideals

A dwarf's beauty is mostly represented by their beard. A long, well kept and well groomed beard are the common signs of maturity, nobility and strength that a dwarf would look for in a partner.   Some dwarven women have been known to bear beards. Those women are often considered some of the most attractive.

Gender Ideals

Of all the races, Dwarves are arguably the most equal in terms of gender traditionalism. Any job that a male dwarf can do, a female can and no-one argues with that, because female dwarves are just as tough and fighty as the males.

Courtship Ideals

Most dwarven courting takes place in bars. Drink being perhaps the largest cultural influence on dwarves, it is very common to find couples in taverns.

Relationship Ideals

Generally speaking, a good partner is one who can put up with you. Some would consider it barbaric or otherwise imperfect, but a Dwarf would see an ideal relationship as stubborn and unyielding to silly emotional trauma and feelings of weakness.

Average Technological Level

Dwarves are among the best blacksmiths because of their exposure to metals and mountains. Masters of the metals, the Dwarves have near perfected methods of utilizing naturally hot magmas and other similar effects to craft the best weapons, armours and jewelry.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

The Dwarven language is among the topmost languages spoken on Everus despite the rarity of the Dwarven popualtion.

Common Etiquette Rules

Signs of weakness are considered uncooth among dwarves and especially dwarven nobility. To bow infront of a dwarf would mean to imply that dwarf can only rule through commanding others to bow. It is far more respectable to instead offer a sign of respect without symbolising fear or submission. Something like a salute, or a nod of the head is applicable.
