Early Battles of the Orion War
What began as a small scale bid to secure their borders against a tyrant, quickly grew to become an interstellar war of epic proportions. It is estimated that almost 10% of sumnian citizens lost their lives in the conflict, and yet for their struggle, they won the galaxy.
The Conflict
Prelude
The Dione Corporation had been formed amidst the collapse of the 2530s and slowly grew in strength thanks to aggressive expansion into the Kaiju Worlds and beyond, effectively gaining a monopoly over the border of the Hellenic Cluster, although the vast majority of the worlds would remain unexplored for centuries. In the following millennium Dione would buy out hundreds of thousands of competitors before assuming control of the majority of the known galaxy. Now controlling a majority in the tenuous United Nations it bribed its way into acknowledged possession of every world in the Hellenic Cluster, inhabited or not. In its final days Dione had begun to stagnate, the distance and bureaucracy meaning that it took several years to get non priority messages to and from the outer colonies. This combined with an established upper-class and an extreme wealth gap would lead to little innovation and an unprepared officer cadre. Several long-sleep missions during the 2600s to the outer edge of known space would go missing, and because of the time delay, were never found. One of these missions would crash onto HD-10180-G-A known a millennia later as Sumnia. The Republic of Sumnia had been dragged into the space age in its infancy, having barely months previously discovered the colony ship on which they arrived. In a period of 3 years, they organised a planetwide government, developed rudimentary rockets, and created a functioning FTL drive. The young nation had barely united itself when it was forced to interact and negotiate with the rest of the Orion Arm. It is perhaps unsurprising then that a nation so young it had yet to fully implement fiat currency and still used direct democracy would be anathema to Dione's governance. Shortly after Sumnia's discovery of Dione, the population voted to go to war.
Deployment
Understanding their lack of knowledge of established space combat, they went to the nearby world of New Prague for answers. New Prague was lead by a Viceroy assigned by Dione Corporation, who was responsible to one of the minor administrative officers on Dione herself. Since it took 2 years for a message to make a round trip the Viceroy was effectively in full control of the planet. The current Viceroy also felt similarly to Sumnia that Dione should be taken down a notch, establishing a secret alliance between New Prague and Sumnia, and agreed to let a large number of Sumnian Officer Cadets to immigrate to New Prague and secretly enter the military academies there. Over the next three years they would secretly send back vital information to Sumnia, who would in turn use that to create increasingly sophisticated ship and weapon prototypes, based on Dionian tech, but tweaked and perfected to their new understanding and concepts of warfare. New ships were tested in mock battles around the dead world of Xaksistri. Espionage didn't just stop at military affairs, they conducted extensive undercover operations against nearby systems, during this time the New Prague's scientific and historical database was leaked to Sumnia in full. With this and access to the myriad census data of the nearby planets also stored within allowed Sumnia to minutely plan their operations, sometimes to platoon level, for the first year of the war. This would all culminate with Sumnia's formal declaration of independence to nearby systems. New Prague, Massissaiy, and Krios would all agree to an alliance for independence, Korok and a few other systems would agree to be neutral in the now obvious upcoming conflict.
Finally, armed with state of the art warships and military exosuits, Sumnia would launch its initial strike on the closest Dionian worlds.
