Although founded on asteroid mining, the station has become a commercial hub in the post-Scream economy where it thrives as a center of exchange.
History
Historical resources concerning the genesis of the Heap are readily available. However, most sources contradict one another which makes the exact date of founding uncertain. However, most experts place it as a late Second Wave construction based on its architecture. A consistent element that is present across almost all of its origin stories is that it started when a mining fleet's AI navigator made a miscalculation during a spike drill and led them off course. The head of the fleet, commander Zhang, made the best of a bad situation and initiated asteroid mining operations.
Although planet-less, the system had unusually dense asteroid rings. Without a planet to provide a base of operations, Zhang's engineers created an ad hoc design that combined several fleet ships into a functioning space station. This has led several historians to speculate that the fleet ships came from one of several pre-Scream companies that specialized in modular inter-compatible ship design. Others disagree and say that the engineers under Zhang's command were simply "that good" and innovated in response to their demanding circumstances.
