The Red Waste
Legend says that the waste was stained red by the blood of the Ancient Beast in its final fight with an Ancient God. The legend claims it is this stain which makes the land inhospitable. Despite the hostile outward appearance, the wastes are actually thriving with life.
Geography
The desert is formed from a combined effect of the rain shadow of the The Bloodstone Hills and the cold currents moving south down the coast. The inner regions of the desert is made of limestone mesas and rolling sand dunes with scattered oasis dotting the plain. Intermixed are various salt lakes and dry river beds. The Kervakhen River cuts a fertile gorge through the desert which is the dominion of the Saisol Awak Empire. Several canyons cut through the gorge walls into fill into the gorge which are formed from intense but infrequent floodplains. The outer band of the desert is known as the Taba Steppe and gradually transitions from sparse desert to savanna to the south and east and forest in the north.

Natural Resources
On top of the people and animals that call it home, the Red Waste is peppered with exposed deposits of ore and minerals. Due to the harsh conditions, even the Saisol Awak Empire has a minor presence in the mining of these deposits. Instead, merchant caravans pass by these sites on their annual trade routes, and a period ranging from a few days is spent collecting the topmost layer, to latter be traded along the way.

Survival
Hot days can result in dehydration while cold nights may cause frostbite. Direct solar radiation can also cause sunburn and heat stroke. Walking through sand slows movement and counts as difficult terrain. Duststorms blow up quickly and last 1d4 hours. Sandstorms are worse and can produce electrical strikes. Glare can result in temporary or even permanent blindness. Flashfloods sweep through low lying areas at 60 mph. Navigation is generally very difficult and dangerous when diverging from well traveled lands.Maps
