Atlantis Settlement in Eschaton Cycle | World Anvil

Atlantis

Atlantis was one of the original Ouranid poleis, founded by Atlas and now ruled by his daughters, the Pleiades.   As the richest city in the World, it has also become one of the most decadent. Trade comes from across the sea to Atlantis, and its aristoi revel in opulence. Titans across the Elládosi World come to Atlantis for Ambrosia and orichalcum.   In recent years, the city has begun to suffer from a blight of an Ambrosia knockoff called Nectar. Nectar replicates some of the effects of Ambrosia, but tends to cause psychotic episodes even more quickly.   The city is famed for its water gardens, glorious baths fragrant with massage oils, and expansive library. Many of its halls take ostentatious grandeur to an embarrassing degree, with its temples soaring into the sky, and its acropolis reaching heights even above the towering Tree of Life.

Industry & Trade

Atlantis's wealth derives from it serving as the World's sole source of both orichalcum and Ambrosia, goods exported all around the Thalassa.

Geography

The city of Atlantis lies upon the island's eastern shore, encircled by two concentric canals running down from the mountains, with the acropolis lying on the central island. Smaller canals bisect the great ones, segmenting the city, while soaring stone bridges connect the different districts.   The central island, home to the royal palace, is further encircled by a forty-feet-high earthen wall capped with bronze crenellations. Beyond this lies a second wall of tin. The walls of the royal citadel itself are capped with orichalcum and engraved with warding glyphs. The citadel bears sculptures of dolphins some fifteen feet long each, acting as water spouts feeding an artificial lake teeming with rays and fish.   Aqueducts carry water throughout the city, including to massive bathhouses. Aristoi and commoners have separate houses. Both have fountains, but only aristos houses have heated fountains.   In the Leucippe District lies the famed Atlantis Amphitheater where performers put on dramas every festival. The theater can hold up to 20,000 spectators.   A great harbor lies within the city, welcoming trade from across the Thalassa with a colossal statue of Atlas commissioned by his daughters. The harbor remains continually full of ships out of all over the Elládosi world, and from beyond.   Atlantis is one of few poleis with guesthouses. In particular, by the harbor lies the famed Bay of Dreams guesthouse and dining hall, known for its posh accommodations and swordfish platters. Patrons—and only the wealthiest of merchants can afford the fare—can dine on a covered portico on the second floor, overlooking the bay.   Beyond the harbor, south of the city, sits the Cove of Poseidon, where his son Triton serves as the mer emissary to Atlantis. Most of Triton's palace lies beneath the surface, but an above-water colonnaded pavilion allows him to receive human visitors.   North of the city lies the Tracks of Kleito, a horse racing course where the aristoi often while away their afternoons.
