Atlantis
The island of Atlantis lies at the heart of the Thalassa Sea, making it a trade center. More importantly, it is the site of the Tree of Life, the fruit from which allows the brewing of Ambrosia. As a consequence, some call it the heart of the World, though this is more often in reference to the city of the same name.
The Oracle Brizo serves Atlantis. She lives in a temple on the western peninsula, across from the island of Ogygia. Her prophecies are famed across the sea, especially for sailors.
Geography
At the heart of the island lies the Evenor Mountain. By the sea lies a wide fertile plain farmed for wheat. Beyond the mountain lies the Garden of the Hesperides where the Tree of Life bears its golden fruit. The garden is guarded by the hydra Ladon. Woodlands cover the southwestern shore, plentiful with game.
Just off the coast lies the island of Ogygia, ruled by Kalypso, daughter of Kelaino.
Fauna & Flora
Atlantis's forest runs flush with subtropical plants, birds, and game animals. Palm trees grace its shores, while upon the mountains, fir and pine trees dominate. Its wide plains are home to herds of elephants.
Natural Resources
The island of Atlantis is the only known source of the metal orichalcum, the most precious material in the World.
History
During the Golden Age, Atlantis was ruled by the Titan Atlas. Following the Titanomachy, Atlas was imprisoned in Tartarus, and Zeus entrusted the island to Atlas's seven daughters, the Pleiades (Maia, Elektra, Taygete, Alkoune, Kelaino, Sterope, Merope). They became the Seven Queens of Atlantis, serving at the sufferance of Zeus. At his command, the better part of the Ambrosia they produce is shipped to Olympus.
At some indeterminate time in the future, the island is torn in half and becomes Vanaheim.
Inspiration
Atlantis is a fictional island put forth in some of Plato's philosophical writings. The island was destroyed in a prehistoric war with Athens. It has since entered popular consciousness and been associated with Greek mythology. In the Eschaton Cycle, it serves as the site of the World Tree. In later Eras it had been split into three pieces (two large halves, plus the island of Crete), but during the Titan Era it is whole.
