The Evening-Bird's Call

There is a species of bird in Meldan and the surrounding region which the locals call the Evening-Bird, on account of that its distinctive call can only be heard around sunset.   The Evening-Bird is a large and solitary bird, measuring about a foot from head to tail feather. It's plumage is primarily black and very dark blue, with more vibrant blue spots at the cheeks and under the wings. The male is generally more muted in color than the female and a little smaller. Evening-Birds are territorial and keep large territories where they keep others of their species away.   The call of the Evening-Bird is very characteristic, a long, slightly ghostly tone that can be heard over long distances and ends in a warble. A common superstition states that the call of the Evening-Bird is lightly prophetic in nature and that the number of calls heard will tell you something about your immediate future.   There are different traditions of what exactly the different numbers of calls mean, but in general one call is interpreted as encouragement and two calls as discouragement for whatever issue or question occupies the hearer's mind. Further associations along those same lines are also common. For example one call is associated with luck, love, successful business dealings, pleasant weather, safe travels and good health. Two, on the other hand, are associated with ill fortune, anger, financial hardship, drought, accidents and illness.   Since the Evening-Bird frequently only calls one or two times in sequence, most of the superstitions and interpretations are connected to these two numbers. Three calls are associated almost exclusively with death across the region but with any number higher than this, being exceedingly rare, the interpretations are vague and very varied.   One interpretation of the calls is summarized in the rhyme below (from the South-West coast of Meldan):   One is for smiles and your lover's kiss
Two for the things you will sadly miss
Three is the call to eternal sleep
Four for the things you will always keep
