Nesi Re-Marr, the Whispering Peeress

Nesi Re-Marr was a noblewoman in the ancient Eltari realm, and is one of the most controversial figures in the history of the region. She was the eldest daughter of a wealthy noble family known for its business dealings, many of which involved goods of dubious legality. The family also had strong ties to powerful people in other regions, and Nesi spent her adolescence studying abroad.   The Queen's Confidante   Nesi Re-Marr was particularly known for being the long-time confidante of the legendary queen Layarna. It is unclear when the two met, but by the time Layarna took the Eltari throne they were by all accounts already quite close, socializing often both at court and occasionally at the Re-Marr estate outside the city. It is said that couriers ran through the city almost daily with messages from one to the other.Due to her and her family's general reputation, her relationship with the queen was controversial and fairly widely criticized. There was widespread concern that a person of her description having the queen's ear would adversely affect the realm and some claimed that her relationship with the queen was a scheme designed to further her family's influence over the throne. It was on account of this that she was given the nickname "The Whispering Peeress".   The Queen's Queen   While officially Nesi Re-Marr and Queen Layarna's relationship was platonic, and the Queen was married to King Leadorn for most of her reign, many believe that the two women were romantically involved. This belief is based largely on those few letters between them that survived to be entered into historical record, which make frequent use of terms of endearment usually only used for romantic partners, including the Queen referring to Nesi as Nesirna, adding the suffix -rna, which means queen and is reserved for royalty. Some theorize that their relationship was kept unofficial due to the sordid reputation of the Re-Marr family, and that the marriage to King Leadorn was a political one. Nesi Re-Marr never married.
