Riven, Home of Heroes

Introduction

The town of Riven lies on the outer edge of the Khrysahl Valley on the continent of Syvahl. The valley in which Riven is located is surrounded by the mountains that make up the eastern edge of Dunatis' Ring. It is home to The Guild of Adventurers, an organization that serves as a college for those who wish to seek the life of an adventurer. The Guild Hall is a place where young aspiring heroes can go to safely train and hone their skills. With so much of Riven being tied to The Guild, they have become what serves as leadership to the town. The Guild of Adventurers is lead by a council of five elders, each with a focus and specialization that coincides with each branch of the guild. With a wide breadth of knowledge and opinions, as well as an uneven number, this system of council leadership has served the town well.   Since the town relies so much on The Guild of Adventurers to bring people into the valley, much of the town business has been shaped to support adventuring types. Many of the craftsman have a focus on arms and armaments. The town has an above average number of taverns and bars. Many of the people who live here full time originally came to be adventurers themselves or as family to someone who has joined the guild and is able to support them in Riven. Surrounding farmland consists of not only livestock and crop to keep the town fed, but there are also numerous hop growers and vineyards who grow wine grapes. This does mean that Riven has a wide variety of wines and ales, some of which are sought after even in other regions of the continent.   Since many of the commonfolk who live here are in some way connected to The Guild or a member of The Guild, Riven actually has a small portion of it's population who are considered poor or impoverished. Those who struggle are often seen as chosing that life as The Guild is willing to give almost anyone a chance to learn and grow, and there is much to do to keep the town prosperous.   Riven also sees a large number of travelers since it's location on the coast makes it one of the few places for traveling ships to stop, rest, and resupply. These ships bring news from the regions outside of the Khyrsahl Valley that may require The Guild's attention as well as give a constant means for adventurers to go out into the world to help those in need.

Neighborhoods of Riven

Though Riven is not officially divided into distinct districts, it is home to a number of collective areas where similar businesses or populations have congregated to. A square has formed up between The Guild Hall and one of the gates out of Riven that is home to many of the town's crafters who focus on arms, armor, and other adventuring gear. Much of the town between The Guild Hall and The Docks is filled with a mixture of inns, taverns, brothels, and bars. The Docks themselves are home to a number of warehouses so that ships who make regular stops to Riven have a place to store goods long term or vendors from out of town can store items in Riven until a merchant can sell the goods off to other companies. The areas furthest from the docks are where much of the working class live.

Key NPCs

Alberich Ironfist - Leader of The Clergy

Lodging

The Heroes Fable

Did a group od adventurers just return to town after a great journey? You can be almost sure to find them in The Heroes Fable telling a tale of their adventure. The Heroes Fable is a large inn with a central bar, two different stages for music, and multiple long tables where an adventuring part can gather to share their stories.

The Golden Satchel

For those adventurers who wish to have more class and avoiud boisterously bragging about their deeds at The Heroes Fable, they have The Golden Satchel. This tavern is much quieter and a fair bit smaller with it's focus set on an evening of luxury. The atmosphere is much more intimate featuring mostly booth seating for small groups and a focus on good food and fine cocktails.

Sailor's Rest

Though the name may imply that this tavern is a quiet place where traveling sailors can stop by to rest their weary bones after a hard week at sea, the Sailor's Rest is quite the opposite. With a name that draws in sailors and deck hands specifically, Sailor's Rest is a rowdy and rambunctious venue where little actual resting actually occurs. The bars patroons can often by heard from blocks away drunkenly shouting their shanty tunes to one another over mugs of cheap ale.

Bars

The Fisherman's Hook

A small bar frequented mostly by fishermen in the docks area of Riven.

The Highwayman

A bar right on the edge of town known for being the first or last place someone may stop before heading out of town into the Khrysahk Valley.

The Copper Dwarf

A dwarven owned pub that specializes in imported ales and liqours. Fairly exclusive due to limited stock on certain items.

Goods and Services

Gizgig The Alchemist

Gizgig is a gnomish alchemist and one of the many Gizgig sisters. Though her actual age is unknown, it is clear that she is old. Though she is obviously wise and skillful, it is hard to have confidence in her as she often comes off crazy. However, if someone is in need of magical supplies as well as minor magical enchantments and potions, she is the one the town turns to.

Dorric Norwood

Dorric Norwood is the owner of a weapons shop located in Riven's crafting square. One of his more notable moments was purchasing The Might Kobold Slaying Spear from Kenina. Upon purchasing the spear in exchange for the story that Kenina shared with him, he immediately began to spin the tale even further, trying to sell the spear, once wielded by a great kobold and used to kill many humans.

Alanis Aldwyn

Alanis Aldwyn is a middle-aged half-elven woodworker. Though he carries many standard wooden items such as bows, arrows, and quarterstaves, one of the things that sets Alanis apart from other woodworkers in the town of Riven is that his small shop has a lathe in it that allows him to offer minor customizations to the items that he sells on the spot instead of needing to take it back to his workshop to do any additional work to it.
