The Blackhouse Casino

Written by WeekendGamez

As you enter the casino, you feel as if it is a homely environment. It's a large, 2-story building with drinks on one floor, and a kitchen on the other. It seems rather nice and clean. There are some tables for drinking, and obviosly, some for gambling away all your money. Due to this, it earned the nickname "The City's Debt House." Most of the dealers are playing a game called Devil's Dice. A game where you can double, triple, or even quadruple your money, or you can lose it all. The building is made of blackstone, hence it's name.   As you sit down at one of the tables, you feel the nice, soft cushion of the seat. The table seems rather nice, made of dark oak wood and a bit of iron to hold it together. A server, a beautiful young lady, comes by and asks if you would like a drink. She hands you a menu and says that they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner too.   As you glance through the menu you find 5 different meal options as follows:
Roasted Phoenix and Leek, Glass of Rum (2 sp) Boiled Mutton and Lentils, Tankard of Perry (9 cp) Salted Veal and Peas, Tankard of Cider (10 cp) Salted Scallop and Cashew Bread, Tankard of Beer (10 cp) Stewed Oxen and Spelt Bread, Tankard of Stout (9 cp)   You choose one of the options and you wait for your drink. As you wait you sit and talk to your friends or whoever you are there with. Within the next 15 minutes, a waitress comes over and hands you your food and drink.   If you choose to gamble, you sit at one of the gambling tables. The way devils dice works is, you, the player, roll 1 dice. The dealer rolls 3. If one of the dice matches you double. If 2 match, it triples. If 3 match, it quadruples. If none match, you lose all your money and the casino gains it all.   You manage to grab hold of some rumors, such as:
The elves of the Tillau Woods are preparing for war.
The elves of the Fangwood Forest are all female.
The silver dragon of the Black Temple of the Wyrm Tyrant sometimes helps adventurers.
The Warrens of Ulfang the Black is haunted by the ghosts of dragons.
A gold dragon is held captive within the Dark Barrow of Emirkol the Chaotic, bound by chains of magical flame.
A spectral dragon has been seen in the Shadow Downs.
A patrol of soldiers has accidentally awakened an undead army in the Dragon's Desert.
As you explore more into the tavern, you find out that the casino is being patronized by: Gery Garre: Male Human Merchant, Good. Gery has copper hair and sharp grey eyes. He wears simple clothing and several pouches hang from his belt. Gery has an acute fear of injury.
Cinge: Male Human Scofflaw, Neutral. Cinge is willowy, with grey hair and grey eyes. He wears simple clothing and carries a willow staff. Cinge is mourning his wife, who was eaten alive by a wyvern.
Gedu: Female Dwarf Servant, Good. Gedu has a square face, with uneven copper hair and green eyes. She wears well-made clothing and a pewter amulet. Gedu blames dragons for every misfortune.
Marielye: Female Elf Mercenary, Good. Marielye is tall and thin, with curly black hair and narrow hazel eyes. She wears chain mail and wields a long sword and shield. Marielye seeks to discover the truth of her lineage.
And finally, the innkeep: a tall, female human named Brytha

Good concept and detail. I like the rumors. Really helps hint at the larger world.   I would suggest some formatting tweaks like breaking up the text under the template's sub-headers.   -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   Feel free to check out my Tavern Challenge article if you want to see what I am up to! A casino! This might be the first one I have read during the Tavern Challenge - I would strongly suggest emphasising on some sections through the Bold tool and maybe adding some more titles and headlines to the article to make it an easier read? I enjoy the worldbuilding done through rumors!

A casino, huh? The setup for the world surrounding it is nice, and made for a fun read, despite the claustrophic formatting others have mentioned.

Interesting approach with the second-person narrative. Lots of things to do here, plenty of plothooks. The only feedback I'd offer is that you start a lot of paragraphs with "As", so maybe vary your language a tiny bit? For example, "Glancing through the menu,"?

I like the idea and the initial detail. I think you can start messing around with formatting. Headers for the different sections would help with the readability a bit, and second person narration can be a little hard for people as it gets a bit repetitive. All that said, you have done a good job with this. It seems ready to slot into a campaign.

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.
