Vampire Species in Ersetu in the Age of Heroes | World Anvil

Vampire

Vampires regard themselves as the 'noble dead,' and typically look down on other forms as beneath them. They obsess over the blood of the living, an all consuming need. While they may pursue other interests, in particular hedonistic entertainment and political ambition, these things only serve to give them access to donors in the end.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Vampires live in their graves. When they walk, they rise from their burial soil in the way a fungus does, growing themselves a new body in just a few hours after dusk. In this form, they walk the world almost indistinguishable from the being that they were in life unless they are cut open and examined to reveal that they are boneless and their organs are rudimentary at best. Some vampires sport sharp teeth, some a hollow-clawed tongue, and some a seemingly normal set of teeth tipped by razor-sharp crowns.

Genetics and Reproduction

Vampires produce more vampires through infection acquired by feeding their own blood to a prospective vampire. Most mortals can fight this infection off, and a period of periodic bloodletting to weaken their immune system is typically required.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Vampires drink living blood. Some strains can eat food and drink alcohol, but most simply lack the anatomy.

Biological Cycle

A vampire's period of unlife lengthens as they age. Regardless, all vampires must return to the moldy soil in which they were interred. They lay on their grave and melt away, their corpus draining into the soil and being reabsorbed by their roots. They remain in this state until they gather enough will to rise again, producing another body to walk the world and revel in it.

Behaviour

In the end, it is their final obsession, it is their food, drink, drug, and breath.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

The growth of a vampire's body partially reflects their own psychology. If they admire themselves, their faces might be more symmetrical than they were in life. If they loathe humanity or are disgusted with themselves, they may appear more monstrous.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Vampires sense the energy of the living, most describing it as a 'vibrant smell' or a 'beautiful opalescent aura.' Most vampires also see in the same visual spectrum as humans, albeit more sensitive to light.

Civilization and Culture

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Vampires dominate humans as a matter of instinct. They either kill or enslave other, 'lesser' undead that they meet. Most vampires started their lives as humans and generally despise other races.   Vampires and the gods generally despise each other. Even Allatu finds them tiresome and above their station.
