The Grand Ante-Historian

Deep underneath the ruins of the city of Tis Domeil lies the Compendium. Vast in scope and monstrously complex, the Compendium is one of the marvels of Techno-Arcane engineering, requiring an army of engineers, wizards and mechanics to maintain its intricate interactions.   While these workers are integral to the proper running of the systems and sub-systems, it is the Auditors and Interpreters that form the heart of the Compendium. Studying its movements, predicting its interactions, these teams of highly intelligent individuals turn the chaotic movement of the machine into comprehensible logic. However, such groups are naturally highly volatile, and academic debate often ends with childish squabbles or flying limbs. Hence a mediator is required to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Compendium.   The Grand Ante-Historian must be both mentally brilliant, in order to understand the nature of the often intricate arguments, and flawlessly diplomatic, in order to appease both sides. Often they are called upon as a judge of sorts, their opinion lending weight to interpretations of history or possible futures.

Appointment

When the previous Ante-Historian becomes unfit for office a new one is elected anonymously from among the ranks of the Interpreters. The outcome of these elections is one of the few world events which are not interpreted from the weightings and analysis of the Compendium.

Duties

Grand Ante-Historians are tasked with maintaining the standards and output of the Compendium, ensuring that the harmony of the machine is matched by the harmony if its workers. They are also expected to maintain the secrecy of futures yet to come.

Responsibilities

The Grand Ante-Historian is required to mediate on disputes between the academics, and whilst there is no official ruling from these disputes their opinion carries huge weight in favour of the side they support. They must also represent the Compendium and their requirements in the Hall of Lords and welcome important guests that visit their subterranean home. On top of these official duties, the Grand Ante-Historian is charged with studying the most crucial parts of possible futures, pouring over interactions, sudden shifts and strange movements in the spheres of the Compendium. These predictions are then written in the tome of Ante-History, and are kept secret from the majority of the outside world.
