Untaran the Sky, the Cursed
"When Untaran spoke he spoke with the voice of the Sky. When Untaran fought his falcatas cut enemies down like lightning, and when Untaran died, he died a King." - Oltalo the Feathered, Unbowed Shaman
Untaran (Oon-tar-an) the Sky was the last great King of the Unbowed Nomads. His horde numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Their territory stretched from the extreme south west corners of Traia all the way north to Jandal and as far east as the Bowra Pass.
Untaran the Sky's horde was the largest tribe of Unbowed to ever exist. No Nomad-King has united so many tribes before or since.
Untaran was a shrewd, brutal and exceptionally charismatic man, two things which are highly prized among the Unbowed. Through careful negotiation and sheer brute force Untaran managed to bring nearly every tribe west of the Bowra Pass under his control. Rivals that stood against him were killed, often in single combat, and their tribes assimilated into Untaran's own. With every tribe joining under his banner Untaran's prestige and legend grew. At its height the tribes under Untaran knew unprecedented success and wealth. Even seeing his scouts was enough to cause caravan workers to abandon their goods and flee into the veld or desert. Untaran brought his tribe unprecedented horde glory, honor, and revitalized their faith in a way that had not been done in centuries.
A large part of that faith revival was because Untaran believed he was sent by the Sky to reclaim the lands the Unbowed had lost to the Traian's over centuries of invasion and conquest. His successes and victories lent credibility to his claims. In a ritual performed on the nest of a roc Untaran was declared the avatar of the Sky, the Warrior of the Eagle, by a tribunal of eleven shamans. and once Untaran decided his tribe was ready they began probing for weaknesses in the Traian defenses to begin their war to reclaim their territory.
The first attack was the sacking of a village, Ein Kaban, which is still nothing more than a ruin. Every one living in the village was killed, and the buildings burned. This first attack drew a small force of soldiers from the nearby Olantin fortress. Olantin fielded several thousand horsemen, footmen, and archers. Even with such sizable numbers they were slaughtered by Untaran's horde when they came near the village. These first skirmishes eventually sparked off the War of the Veld, a decade long conflict between Untaran's massive tribe, and the massive army of the Traian King, Kolkim I Wazida.
These conflicts continued for a decade up and down the south eastern frontiers of Traia until King Kolkim I battle and executed. In revenge for all the lives Untaran had claimed while his tribe was on the warpath Kolkim had Untaran's body buried at sea rather than Touching Heaven. Since that time Untaran the accomplishments of Untaran's life have been largely forgotten by the Traians, and even by the Unbowed, who have no written histories and rather than being known as Untaran the Sky, or the Warrior of the Eagle, has he become known as Untaran the Cursed. Legend says that he can be heard wailing and fighting enemies long gone from this world in various places around the Black Knife, the site of his final battle.
