Merchant Houses of Craw

Population: 3,000,000     The Merchant Council is an elected body of representatives from each of the Recognized Merchant Houses. There are dozens of merchant houses in Craw's borders, but only twelve of them are recognized. The last to be recognized was more than a century ago. The entire country is ruled from its capitol, Nakyra, which sits on a large, rocky island, east of the southern most tip of the continent        It primarily exports agricultural goods such as dates, olives, grapes, and wine, but also textiles like alpaca and llama wool and cotton grown in the hot, humid lowlands. The mountainous areas also give Craw a rich supply of gold and silver.

Demography and Population

Craw has a relatively diverse population of humans from Sandryne, Traia, and even as far as Lower Lete, and the Demenian Empire

Military

Craw has a large army but it is decentralized, with each of the Recognized Houses responsible for raising, maintaining its own force. In war time a central commander is elected, and given command of all the forces. Although, personal feuds and politics come into play. This means that sometimes an inferior, compromise commander is elected, and twice in the nation's history has it gone to war with no commander at all. Most of the under Houses (those not Recognized) also have their own private armies. However since most of them are orders of magnitude smaller than the Recognized Houses they are neither required or expected to shoulder the burden of maintaining any forces for the nation's use. Often, they still contribute though, either directly with troops, or indirectly with funds or supplies.

  • Craw Writ of Value: Writs are documents that can be exchanged at certified banks for the value noted on them. Writs are commonly saved for large transactions and are generally favored over moving very large amounts of gold and silver coins, gems, or other valuables.
Legislative Body
The Merchant Houses of Craw, and their territories are managed by an elected Merchant Council from the twelve largest Merchant Houses in the country, known as the Recognized Merchant Houses. While there are dozens of merchant houses in Craw only 12 are officially recognized by the Council. Theoretically there are strict criteria a House can meet to earn official recognition, and thus representation on the Council, but the Council has not officially recognized a house in more than a century.   In the event of a deadlock a citizen is selected at random to hear all sides of a debate and vote to break the tie.
Judicial Body
Justice is dispensed by the Merchant-Adjutants, of all houses. Each house appoints their own, and as many as they need. These Merchant-Adjutants report directly to a Merchant-Judge. Merchant-Judges are appointed for life by each of the Recognized Houses.
