Living Erenel: Downtime

Welcome to the Living Erenel Downtime article. In this article, we'll breakdown the second major pillar of the Living Erenel experience, Downtime!   The Downtime system allows dungeon masters to reward players with resources. By awarding the same currency to players each week, we remove any unfairness between games and give players the freedom to pursue their goals.

In Living Erenel, players are given a specific amount of Downtime Days each week during the Weekly Update live stream. A text update is included in the #weekly-update Discord channel after the Weekly Update. These Downtime Days may be spent on various progression activities such as Crafting, Training or Working.   Immediately following the Weekly Update, players will be able to sign up for Adventures and/or spend Downtime Days. If a player attempts to sign up for an Adventure that week, they have Adventure Downtime Cost as discussed in Living Erenel: Adventuring. Adventure Downtime Cost does not need to be posted by players in Discord.   Downtime Days expire one hour before the Weekly Update begins. If a player attempts to sign up for an Adventure but is not selected or the Adventure is full, they regain spent Downtime Days for not running an Adventure.

When spending Downtime Days, the Player will post in the #downtime Discord Channel. After a moderator approves the Downtime with a "thumbs up" emote, the Player may make adjustments to their character sheet. The player must wait until approval before changing their character sheet.   Moderators only approve Downtime posts at regularly scheduled intervals, which are listed in this articles sidebar. Downtime placed hours before an adventure will not be accepted unless the regularly scheduled interval falls before the adventure. No exceptions.   When entering your Downtime in Discord, be sure to include as much information as possible for the Downtime Moderators.

Correct Example: Brews works for 3 days and earns 60 GP
Incorrect Example: Brews Works for 3 days.

Artisan's Tools

An artisan tool helps you do something you couldn’t otherwise do in downtime situations, such as crafting items, cooking food, or writing scrolls. Tools in Living Erenel have more uses and can be enhanced magically, similar to +1, +2, +3 weapons, and armor. When purchasing a magically enhanced tool, the tool will provide additional benefits and expanded options, dependant on the tool and your skill with said tool.

+1 Tools

A +1 tool is considered an uncommon magic item, priced at 1,000 GP.
A minimum player level of 5 is required to craft at +1.

+2 Tools

A +2 tool is considered a rare magic item, priced at 2,500 GP.
A minimum player level of 10 is required to craft at +2.

+3 Tools

A +3 tool is considered a very rare magic item, priced at 5,000 GP.
A minimum player level of 15 is required to craft at +3.

Tool Proficiency

When performing the various Downtime Activities below, proficiency in the necessary tool is required.

Tool Expertise

Having expertise in a tool allows you to craft an item 3 levels higher than your current player level.   Example: A 7th character with expertise in Smith's Tools can now use +2 Smith Tools to craft Rare items.

Available Downtime Tools

The following tools which are used in Living Erenel Downtime and can be enhanced magically are shown below. As Living Erenel progresses, more options will become available for magically enhanced tools.
  • Alchemist’s Supplies: Craft potions
  • Calligrapher’s Supplies: Craft scrolls and music sheets.
  • Cook’s Utensils: Craft food and drink
  • Herbalism Kit: Forage for poison and potion materials
  • Jeweler’s Tools: Craft jewelry and gems made from precious stones.
  • Leatherworker’s Tools: Craft armor made of leather
  • Poisoner’s Kit: Craft Poisons
  • Smith’s Tools: Craft armor and weapons made of metal
  • Tinkerer’s Tools: Craft clockwork devices and firearms
  • Weaver’s Tools: Craft items made of cloth
  • Woodcarver’s Tools: Craft weapons, arrows, and items made from wood

When a Player uses a tool that has been enhanced magically, that tool cannot be used again until the Weekly Update.

Downtime Approval Times

  • Friday 5:30 PM EST
  • Sunday 5:30 PM EST
  • Tuesday 5:30 PM EST
  • Thursday 7:00 PM EST
  • Downtime Activities and Cost

The following Downtime Activities are available for Living Erenel players to spend Downtime Days on each week. Downtime days are spent by posting in the #downtime Discord Channel and discussed further below.   When using Downtime to craft items over multiple days, a gold cost of the item is divided into “pieces,” allowing an item to be crafted over multiple weeks. If the gold remainder remaining is less than the typical gold per day amount, it still requires the full Downtime day to complete.   When posting about crafting in the #downtime Discord channel, include the number of completed days for reference in this format.

Example: (Player name) is crafting (item) totaling (gold spent so far) / (total gold needed), (completed days) / (total days needed)

    Cooking

    Prerequisite: Proficiency in Cook’s Utensils
Prepare food and drink to consume for a passive benefit during an adventure. Spend (1) downtime day and the required gold to cook a recipe. When cooking, you can cook recipes up to the daily gold cost amount of 100 gp. If the recipe's cost is higher than the 100 gp daily cost amount, you only make (1) recipe.   If you wish to save gold, you do not need to fill the gold cost amount, however the full downtime day is always spent. All recipes must be the same if cooking multiple items with the same downtime day. All prepared dishes will spoil after (2) Weekly Updates.

    Enhanced Cook’s Utensils

Cooking exquisite meals are a feat requiring enhanced magical tools. At base, artisan tools can only craft Common meals.
    • +1 tools are required for Uncommon food and drink
    • +2 tools are required for Rare food and drink
    • +3 tools are required for Very Rare food and drink

    Consume Dishes

You can consume a dish at any point as an action to receive the benefit. You may only benefit from one dish at a time, with the last dish providing the most current benefit. A benefit expires after one Living Erenel Adventure unless stated otherwise.

    Crafting Items

    Clockwork Items

    Prerequisite: Proficiency in Tinkerer's Tools
Players craft clockwork items, explosives and ammunition at a 10% discount compared to their listed gold value. When crafting, downtime days required are determined by the gold cost of the item divided by 100 GP. When spending downtime days, the downtime days spent reduces the total number of required downtime days, allowing you to craft over multiple weeks.

    Adventuring Gear

Clockwork Adventuring Gear crafting follows the Mundane Crafting downtime rules and requires tinkerer's tools.

    Enhanced Tinkerer's Tools

Crafting clockwork magic items is a feat requiring enhanced magical tools. At base, artisan tools can only craft Common rarity magic items.
    • +1 tools are required for Uncommon items
    • +2 tools are required for Rare items
    • +3 tools are required for Very Rare items

    Crafting Ammunition and Explosives

When crafting ammunition and cheaper explosives, you craft in stacks up to the daily gold cost amount. If you wish to save gold, you do not need to fill the gold cost amount, however the full downtime day is always spent.
Example 1: You could craft up to 6 Acidic Bullets with 1 downtime day.
Example 2: You could craft up to 2 Lightning in a Bottle with 1 downtime day.   Clockwork Workshop

    Magic Items

Players cannot craft Named Magic Items because they are earned with Renown or purchased with Seasonal Currency.   Magic Item crafting is primarily used to craft +1, +2, +3 weapons, armor, Wand of the Warmage and TCE +1, +2, +3 class items. A reminder that all +1, +2, +3 items require attunement and come with (1) open gem socket.
To craft magical items, the player will need proficiency with the tool associated with the craft. Because there is a wide variety of items to craft, it is recommended to ping a Moderator or Sherpa if you are unsure for confirmation. A general rule of thumb is if the tool description matches the item, you will be approved.   Players craft magic items at a 10% discount compared to their listed gold value. When crafting magic items, downtime days required are determined by the gold cost of the magic item divided by 100 GP. When spending downtime days, the downtime days spent reduces the total number of required downtime days, allowing you to craft over multiple weeks.

    Enhanced Artisan Tools

Crafting magical items is a feat requiring enhanced magical tools. At base, artisan tools can only craft Common rarity items.
    • +1 tools are required for Uncommon magic items
    • +2 tools are required for Rare magic items
    • +3 tools are required for Very Rare magic items
    • Legendary items cannot be crafted.

Example: A +1 longsword is priced at 1,000 GP. Crafting a +1 longsword would require proficiency with +1 Smith’s Tools, 9 downtime days, and 900 GP.   Important Note: When crafting +1, +2 or +3 versions of weapons and armor, this does not include the base cost of the item. You would include the cost of the mundane item plus the cost of the magical item, or already have the mundane item in your inventory.

    Mundane Items

To craft mundane items, the player will need proficiency with the tool associated with the craft. Common materials are easy to obtain by players in capital cities. When crafting mundane items, the player will spend gold equal to 2/3 the cost of the item, rounded down. Downtime days progress as followed, with the gold cost below matching the Players Handbook and Living Erenel Equipment options. When spending downtime days, the downtime days spent reduces the total number of required downtime days, allowing you to craft over multiple weeks.

Example 1: Crafting leather armor would require proficiency with Leatherworker’s Tools, 1 downtime day, and 6 GP to craft.

Example 2: Crafting arrows would require proficiency with Woodcarver’s Tools, 1 downtime day, and 3 GP to make 100 arrows. (Arrows come in stacks of 20 and are worth 1 GP, letting you craft 5x).
      Masterwork Options: Masterwork Armory
    Item Value Crafting Days
Up to 1 GP 5x with 1 day
Over 1 GP to 50 GP 1 day
    51 GP to 200 GP 2 days
    201 GP to 1,000 GP 3 days
    1,001 to 2,000 GP 4 days
2,001 GP and above moderator approval

    Poisons and Potions

Poison Prerequisite: Proficiency in Poisoner's Kit
Potion Prerequisite: Proficiency in Alchemist's Supplies
Players craft potions and poisons at a 10% discount compared to their listed gold value. When crafting, all potions and poisons require (1) downtime day, regardless of their gold cost. However, all gold required is spent at the time of crafting.   If the player posseses the necessary material from Foraging, the crafting gold cost is removed. Gold cost can be found on the Erenel Shopping List in Discord or this articles sidebar.
Example: Cafting a potion of healing would require proficiency with Alchemist’s Supplies, 1 downtime day, and 45 GP.

Enhanced Alchemist’s Supplies or Poisoner’s Kit

Crafting powerful potions and poisons is a feat requiring enhanced magical tools. At base, artisan tools can only craft Common rarity items.
    • +1 tools are required for Uncommon magic items
    • +2 tools are required for Rare magic items
    • +3 tools are required for Very Rare magic items
    • Legendary items cannot be crafted.
      Blood Potion Option: Hematurgy Vials

    Scrolls

    Prerequisite: Proficiency in Calligrapher’s Supplies
Players craft scrolls at a 10% discount compared to their listed gold value. When crafting, all scrolls require (1) downtime day, regardless of their gold cost. All gold required is spent at the time of crafting.

    Enhanced Calligrapher’s Supplies

Crafting powerful scrolls is a feat requiring enhanced magical tools. At base, artisan tools can only craft Cantrip and 1st-level scrolls.
    • +1 tools are required for 2nd-level and 3rd-level scrolls
    • +2 tools are required for 4th-level and 5th-level scrolls
    • +3 tools are required for 6th-level and 7th-level scrolls
    • 8th-level and 9th-level scrolls cannot be crafted.

Spell Level GP Cost Save DC Spell Attack Bonus
    Cantrip 25 GP 13 +5
    1st 50 GP 13 +5
    2nd 250 GP 13 +5
    3rd 500 GP 15 +7
    4th 1,500 GP 15 +7
    5th 2,500 GP 17 +9
    6th 5,000 GP 17 +9
    7th 7,500 GP 18 +10

    Foraging

    Prerequisite: Proficiency in Herbalism Kit
Search for reagents to craft a poison or potion at no gold cost. When foraging, you announce what potion or poison reagent you wish to forage. This reagent is enough for (1) craft of only the announced potion or poison.   When foraging, downtime days required are determined by the gold cost of the potion or poison divided by 100 GP. When spending downtime days, the downtime days spent reduces the total number of required downtime days, allowing you to forage over multiple weeks, if necessary. Foraging does not require gold and only uses the gold cost to determine time spent.

    Enhanced Herbalism Kit

Foraging for rare herbs is a feat requiring enhanced magical tools. At base, artisan tools can only forage for Common rarity herbs.
    • +1 tools are required for Uncommon herbs
    • +2 tools are required for Rare herbs
    • +3 tools are required for Very Rare herbs
    • Legendary herbs cannot be foraged.

    Gems

    Prerequisite: Proficiency in Jeweler's Tools
Weapons, and armor with a magic property of +1, +2, or +3, also include an open socket, allowing players to socket a magical gem. A player with proficiency in Jeweler's Tools can craft different gems and socket the gem correctly.   When crafting gems, downtime days required are determined by the gold cost of the gem divided by 100 GP. When spending downtime days, the downtime days spent reduces the total number of required downtime days, allowing you to craft over multiple weeks. If you possess the raw version of the gem, deduct 1,000 GP from the gems cost.   Suppose a player does not have proficiency in Jeweler's Tools. In that case, they must find a Jeweler and agree upon a cost to have a gem socketed in their equipment. A gem may be removed by a skilled jeweler with 1-minute of work preserving the gem, or hastily removed by anyone destroying the gem. After a gem has been removed, a new gem may be placed in the same socket. Only (1) gem can be added to an item. Gems cannot be placed in shields at this time.

    Enhanced Jeweler's Tools

Crafting magical items is a feat requiring enhanced magical tools. At base, artisan tools can only craft Common rarity gems.
    • +1 tools are required for Uncommon gems
    • +2 tools are required for Rare gems
    • +3 tools are required for Very Rare gems

    Wand and Spellcasting Focuses

Wands and magical spellcasting focuses with magical property of +1, +2, or +3, also include an open socket, allowing players to socket a magical gem. These include but are not limited to Wands of the War Mage, Moon Sickle and Bloodwell Vial.   When using the table below, the following rules are applied.
  • The extended spell duration gem only applies to spells that have a duration of 1-minute or longer.
  • The increased spell attack range applies to the range of the spell, not the spells radius.
  • When rerolling 1s on cantrip damage rolls, you must use the new roll even if it is a 1.
  • Raw Gems and Gem Dust

Raw gems found on adventures can be ground into Gem Dust. Gem Dust is a vital spell casting reagent used for all Resurrection spells and NPC spellcasting, such as remove curse. At base, proficiency in Jeweler’s Tools can dust all raw gems.   Each Raw Gem provides 100 GP worth of Gem Dust and does not require Downtime to perform. When dusting a gem, players should post in #p2p-transactions with the specific Raw Gems used and the amount of Dust gained.

    Mount and Pet Training

Collect and train mounts and pets to aid you on adventures or to provide flair and show status in the Living World.
Learn more: Mount and Pet Training

    Remove Soulbinding

    Prerequisite: Proficiency in Calligrapher’s Supplies
When a player attunes to a magic item, the item becomes Soulbound, as discussed in House Rules. Suppose a player does not have proficiency with Calligrapher's Supplies. In that case, they must find a Calligrapher and agree upon a cost to have the binding unlocked. Doing so allows the magic item to be attuned by another player.

    Enhanced Calligrapher's Supplies

Unlocking an item in this way requires (1) downtime day, per item. At base, artisan tools can only unlock Common magic items.
    • +1 tools are required for Uncommon magic items
    • +2 tools are required for Rare magic items
    • +3 tools are required for Very Rare magic items

    Sell Magic Item

Selling magic items is no easy task with thieves, high transaction values, and the difficulty of finding a legitimate buyer. After accessing the risk, you can sell a magical item in your inventory to potential NPC buyers. All magic items sell at 1/4 their value rounded down with differing downtime days required, based on the rarity shown in the table below. Legendary magic items cannot be sold with downtime days.   When attempting to sell a magic item, you can choose to roll a Persuasion check, representing negotiations. On a success, you sell the individual item at 1/3 value rounded down. Be warned, this check adds risk! If your Persuasion result is less than 5, downtime days are lost, and the item is unsold.   When spending downtime days, the downtime days spent reduces the total number of required downtime days. This allows you to spread the word and market your sale over multiple weeks. When posting about selling magic items in #downtime, include the number of completed days for reference in this format.   Example: (player name) is selling (magic item) totaling (completed days)/(total days needed)   Note: It is meant to be far more rewarding to sell items between players in the Discord marketplace. Selling magic items with downtime is a way for quick GP while unloading unwanted items. Not a means for crafters to sell magic items at profit to a NPC. The costs above should help act as a "floor" for any negotiations.
    Rarity Downtime Days
    Common 1
    Uncommon 2
    Rare 4
    Very Rare 8

    Shop

All mundane items are available for purchase in the Adventure Hall by clicking on NPC vendors. Purchasing items in this way does not require Downtime!   Mundane items cannot be sold to NPCs.

    Training

Given enough free time and the services of an instructor, a player can learn a wide range of enhancing abilities. If you drop the training for your current choice before it is complete in favor of another choice, all gold spent is lost, and you will need to start at the beginning when returning to the previous choice.   When spending downtime days, the downtime days spent reduces the total number of required downtime days, allowing you to train over multiple weeks. When posting about training in the #downtime Discord Channel, include the number of completed days for reference in this format.
Example: (Player name) is training (training service) totaling (gold spent so far) / (total gold needed), (completed days) / (total days needed)

    Marketplace

In the #marketplace Discord channel, players may buy, sell, and trade wares with one another. In the marketplace, you can post role play discussions such as buyers requests, what you would like to sell, or what trades you are interested in pursuing.   The following ruleset is in place while using the #marketplace. Failure to adhere to the rules or attempting to cheat on your character sheet can result in your removal from Living Erenel.
    • While bartering, do not delete your post regardless of the deal going through or not. Logs are kept and updated.
    • Do not spam. This is not a MMO trade chat.
    • Follow the Roleplaying Best Practices Ruleset and Prohibited Roleplay Conduct.
    • Once a deal is made, the deal is not finalized until it has been posted and approved in the #p2p-transactions Discord channel. You may not add or subtract inventory until moderator approval. More information below.

    Player to Player Transactions

Once a transaction is agreed upon by players, a player will initiate the approval process by posting in the #p2p-transactions Discord channel. It is up to the players who will initiate the process.   To do so, one player will post the agreed-upon deal. After the initial post, all other included players will confirm the deal with a confirmation post.   Once an Erenel moderator sees and confirms the trade, they will post and tag all players involved. Players may then deduct and/or add items on their character sheet in terms of the deal. A moderator will most likely be watching character sheets during this time or will check in to verify shortly after.

    Transaction Example
Player 1: I am buying a Potion of Healing from @Player2 for 45 gp.
    Player 2: Confirmed @Player1
    Moderator: @Player 1 @Player 2 Approved – please adjust your inventories.
