Living Erenel: Downtime

Welcome to the Living Erenel Downtime article. In this article, we'll breakdown the fourth major pillar of Living Erenel's D&D/MMO experience, Downtime!

In Living Erenel, players are awarded Downtime Days each week during the Weekly Update live stream, with a Discord update included in the #weekly-update channel. These Downtime Days may be spent on various progression activities, acting as ways to earn or spend gold, driving Living Erenel’s player economy. As Living Erenel progresses with more players and themed seasons, additional Downtime Activities will be unlocked.   Immediately following the Weekly Update, players will be able to sign up for Adventures and/or Spend Downtime Days. If a player attempts to sign up for an Adventure that week, they must spend Downtime as discussed in Living Erenel: Adventuring.   Downtime Days expire one hour before the Weekly Update begins. If a player attempts to sign up for an Adventure but is not selected or the Adventure is full, they regain spent Downtime Days for not running an Adventure.

When spending Downtime Days, the Player will post in the #downtime Discord Channel. Once a moderator approves the Downtime with an emote, the Player may make adjustments to their character sheet.   A moderator may ask you to roll dice with the Discord Bot before approval, depending upon your Downtime Activity.

Artisan's Tools

A tool helps you do something you couldn’t otherwise do in downtime situations, such as crafting items, cooking food, or writing scrolls. Tools in Living Erenel have more uses and can be enhanced magically, similar to +1, +2, +3 weapons, and armor. When purchasing a magically enhanced tool, the tool will provide additional benefits and expanded options, dependant on the tool.

+1 Tools

A +1 tool is considered an uncommon magic item, priced at 1,000 GP. A minimum player level of 5 is required to craft at +1.

+2 Tools

A +2 tool is considered a rare magic item, priced at 2,500 GP. A minimum player level of 10 is required to craft at +2.

+3 Tools

A +3 tool is considered a very rare magic item, priced at 5,000 GP. A minimum player level of 15 is required to craft at +3.

Tool Proficiency

When performing the various Downtime Activities below, proficiency in the necessary tool is required.

Tool Expertise

Having expertise in a tool allows you to craft an item 3 levels higher than your current player level.   Example: A 5th level character with expertise in Alchemist Supplies can now craft potions in the level 7th bracket.   Example 2: A 7th character with expertise in Smith's Tools can now use +2 Smith Tools.

Available Tools

The following tools which are used in Living Erenel Downtime and can be enhanced magically are shown below. As Living Erenel progresses, more options will become available for magically enhanced tools.
  • Alchemist’s Supplies: Craft potions
  • Calligrapher’s Supplies: Craft scrolls
  • Cook’s Utensils: Craft food and drink
  • Dragonforger’s Tools: Available in an upcoming season
  • Herbalism Kit: Forage for poison and potion materials
  • Jeweler’s Tools: Craft jewelry and gems made from precious stones.

Downtime Activities

The following Downtime Activities are available for Living Erenel players to spend Downtime Days on each week. Downtime days are spent by posting in the #downtime Discord Channel and discussed further below.

Carousing

Spread the news around Erenel of you and your companion's achievements in battle. Spend one downtime day and ((your character's level) x (25 GP)) to give inspiration to your entire party, and yourself, during your next Adventure. If your Adventure includes multiple sessions, increase the GP multiplication amount by 25 per session to gain inspiration at the start of each session.

Cooking

Prerequisite: Proficiency in Cook’s Utensils
Prepare food and drink to consume for a passive benefit available during an adventure or in downtime. Spend one downtime day and the required gold to cook a dish able to be enjoyed by one player. The prepared dish will spoil at the beginning of the Weekly Update, typically Thursday at 7:00 PM EST.

Enhanced Cook’s Utensils

If you possess magically enhanced cooking utensils (+1, +2, or +3) you create one extra consumable per bonus at no cost. All dishes are the same when preparing bonus dishes. Example: a +2 Cook’s Utensil would prepare 1 + 2 for 3 dishes total of the same dish.

Consume Dishes

You can consume a dish at any point as an action to receive the benefit. You may only benefit from one dish at a time, with the last dish providing the most current benefit. A benefit expires after one Living Erenel Adventure unless stated otherwise.

Crafting Items

Magic Items

To craft magical items, the player will need proficiency with the tool associated with the craft. Because there is a wide variety of items to craft, it is recommended to ping a moderator if you are unsure for confirmation. A general rule of thumb is if the tool description matches the magic item, you will be approved.   Players craft magic items at a 10% discount compared to their listed gold value. When crafting magic items, downtime days required are determined by the gold cost of the magic item divided by 100 GP. When spending downtime days, the downtime days spent reduces the total number of required downtime days, allowing you to craft over multiple weeks.

Enhanced Artisan Tools

Crafting magical items is a feat requiring enhanced magical tools. At base, artisan tools can only craft Common rarity magic items.
  • +1 tools are required for Uncommon rarity magic items
  • +2 tools are required for Rare rarity magic items
  • +3 tools are required for Very Rare magic items
  • Legendary items cannot be crafted.

Example: A +1 longsword is priced at 1,000 GP. Crafting a +1 longsword would require proficiency with +1 Smith’s Tools, 9 downtime days, and 900 GP.   Important Note: When crafting +1, +2 or +3 versions of weapons and armor, this does not include the base cost of the item. You would include the cost of the mundane item plus the cost of the magical item, or already have the mundane item in your inventory.

Mundane Items

To craft mundane items, the player will need proficiency with the tool associated with the craft. Common materials are easy to obtain by players in capital cities. When crafting mundane items, the player will spend gold equal to 2/3 the cost of the item, rounded down. Downtime days progress as followed, with the gold cost below matching the Players Handbook and Living Erenel Equipment options. When spending downtime days, the downtime days spent reduces the total number of required downtime days, allowing you to craft over multiple weeks.

Example 1: crafting leather armor would require proficiency with Leatherworker’s Tools, 1 downtime day, and 6 GP to craft.

Example 2: crafting arrows would require proficiency with Woodcarver’s Tools, 1 downtime day, and 3 GP to make 100 arrows. (Arrows come in stacks of 20 and are worth 1 GP, letting you craft 5x).

Item Value Crafting Days
Up to 1 GP 5x with 1 day
Over 1 GP to 50 GP 1 day
51 GP to 200 GP 2 days
201 GP to 1,000 GP 3 days
1,001 to 2,000 GP 4 days
2,001 GP and above moderator approval

Poisons and Potions

Poison Prerequisite: Proficiency in Poisoner's Kit. | Potion Prerequisite: Proficiency in Alchemist's Supplies
To craft poisons and potions, the player will need proficiency with the tool associated with the craft and the required minimum player level. Common reagents are easy to obtain by players in capital cities. When crafting poisons and potions, the player will spend gold equal to 3/4 the cost of the item, rounded down, and one downtime day. If the player posseses the necessary material from Foraging, the gold cost is removed. Gold cost can be found on the Erenel Shopping List pinned in Discord.
Example 1: crafting a potion of healing would require proficiency with Alchemist’s Supplies, 1 downtime day, and 37 GP.   Example 2: crafting wyvern poison would require proficiency with a Poisoner’s Kit, 1 downtime day, and 900 GP.

Enhanced Alchemist’s Supplies or Poisoner’s Kit

If you possess magically enhanced tools ( +1, +2, or +3), you create one extra consumable per bonus at no cost. All consumables are the same when crafting bonus consumables. Example: a +2 Alchemist’s Supplies would create 1 + 2 for 3 of the same consumable.
New Blood Potion Option: Hematurgy Vials
Consumable Value Minimum Character Level
Up to 50 GP 1
51 - 250 GP 3
251 - 500 GP 5
501 - 750 GP 7
751 - 1,000 GP 9
1,001 - 2,000 GP 12
2,001 - 5,000 GP 15

Scrolls

Prerequisite: Proficiency in Calligrapher’s Supplies
To craft a scroll, the player will need to know the spell or be able to prepare the spell at their current level. Spend one downtime day and the required gold to craft the scroll. Cantrips are considered 1st level spells with this crafting process.

Enhanced Calligrapher’s Supplies

If you possess magically enhanced Calligrapher’s Supplies (+1, +2, or +3), the rate at which you craft scrolls increases, possibly allowing for more crafts in a day.   +1 Calligrapher’s Supplies allows you to craft a number of scrolls per downtime day with a combined spell level, equal to half your spellcaster player level, rounded down. You must pay the gold cost for each scroll while crafting multiple scrolls.   +2 Calligrapher’s Supplies allows you to craft a number of scrolls per downtime day with a combined spell level, equal to your spellcaster player level. You must pay the gold cost for each scroll while crafting multiple scrolls.   +3 Calligrapher’s Supplies allows you to craft a number of scrolls per downtime day with a combined spell level, equal to your spellcaster player level +4. You must pay the gold cost for each scroll while crafting multiple scrolls.   Example 1: A 5th level wizard with +1 calligrapher’s supplies can craft a total of 2 spell scrolls if they choose. Both scrolls would be 1st level.   Example 2: A 5th level wizard with +2 calligrapher’s supplies can craft a total of 5 spell scrolls if they choose. A combination of options is available such as (2) level 2 and (1) level 1 scrolls, or (5) level 1 scrolls.
Spell Level GP Cost Save DC Spell Attack Bonus
Cantrip/1st 50 GP 13 +5
2nd 250 GP 13 +5
3rd 500 GP 15 +7
4th 1,500 GP 15 +7
5th 2,500 GP 17 +9
6th 5,000 GP 17 +9
7th 7,500 GP 18 +10
8th 10,000 GP 18 +10
9th 20,000 GP 19 +11

Faction Advancement: Renown

When a Faction Leader uses the Faction’s Downtime for Advancement that week, all players in the Faction may use the Faction Advancement downtime activity. When Faction Advancement is used by the Faction, it does not gain Renown; instead, it unlocks the option that week for players to boost their Renown.   Spend 1/2 (rounded up) of the week's allotted downtime days, increasing your Renown by 1. Downtime days players purchase with a seasonal currency, and the Lone Wolf downtime day benefit are not affected as they are not allotted with the Weekly Update.

Foraging

Prerequisite: Proficiency in Herbalism Kit
Spend one downtime day to search an area in Erenel for reagents to craft a poison or potion. When foraging, you announce what potion or poison reagent you wish to search. This reagent is enough for one craft of only the announced potion or poison. You may only find one reagent per downtime day. When announcing the reagent, your character must meet the reagent level to search for the reagent.   Example: I announce I want to find the reagent to craft a superior healing potion. A superior healing potion has a gold cost of 450, meaning I would need to be a 9th level character.

Enhanced Herbalism Kit

If you possess a magically enhanced Herbalism Kit ( +1, +2, or +3), you find one extra reagent per bonus. All reagents found are the same while foraging and based on what you announced. Example: a +2 Herbalism Kit would find 1 + 2 for 3 of the same reagent.

Reagent Value Minimum Character Level
Up to 50 GP 1
51 - 150 GP 3
151 - 300 GP 6
301 - 500 GP 9
501 - 1,500 GP 12
1,501 GP and above 15

Gem Socketing

Prerequisite: Proficiency in Jeweler's Tools
Generic weapons, and armor with a magic property of +1, +2, or +3, also include an open socket allowing players to socket a magical gem, increasing the equipment's power. A player with proficiency in Jeweler's Tools can craft different gems and socket the gem correctly.   Players craft a gem at a 10% discount compared to their listed gold value. When crafting gems, downtime days required are determined by the gold cost of the gem divided by 150 GP. When spending downtime days, the downtime days spent reduces the total number of required downtime days, allowing you to craft over multiple weeks.   Suppose a player does not have proficiency in Jeweler's Tools. In that case, they must find and agree upon a cost to have a gem they have collected socketed in their equipment. A gem may be removed by a skilled jeweler with 1-minute of work preserving the gem, or hastily removed by anyone destroying the gem. After a gem has been removed, a new gem may be placed in the same socket.   Only 1 gem can be added to an item. Gems cannot be placed in shields at this time.

Enhanced Jeweler's Tools

Crafting magical items is a feat requiring enhanced magical tools. At base, artisan tools can only craft Common rarity magic items.
  • +1 tools are required for Uncommon gems
  • +2 tools are required for Rare gems
  • +3 tools are required for Very Rare gems
  • Wand and Spellcasting Focuses

Wands and magical spellcasting focuses with magical property of +1, +2, or +3, also include an open socket allowing players to socket a magical gem, increasing the equipment's power. These include but are not limited to Wands of the War Mage, Moon Sickle and Bloodwell Vial.   When using the table below, the following rules are applied.
  • The extended spell duration gem only applies to spells that have a duration of 1-minute or longer.
  • The increased spell attack range applies to the range of the spell, not the spells radius.
  • When rerolling 1s on cantrip damage rolls, you must use the new roll even if it is a 1.

    Mount and Pet Training

    Powerlevel Faction Member

Assist a member in your Faction, increasing their Character Experience. Spend 1/2 (rounded up) of the week's allotted downtime days, increasing their Character Adventure Experience by 1. Downtime days players purchase with a seasonal currency, and the Lone Wolf downtime day benefit are not affected as they are not allotted with the Weekly Update.   To assist a Faction member, you must be of a higher Character Level. If you are the same level, you cannot aid them in this way. A lower level character may only benefit from one Power Level per week. Characters cannot benefit from any Power Leveling once they hit 6th level.   A Faction can use Faction Downtime to power level a faction member. The Faction uses the Faction Leader's character level when determining the higher level player.

    Research

The research downtime activity allows a player to delve into lore concerning a monster, location, magic item, or some other particular topic. Because topics chosen to research vary and comes directly from Brews, the number of downtime days could also vary.   All information resulting from Research will be provided in a private message once the Research period ends. Research can not be used to spy on other Factions.   Important! There is some knowledge that cannot be obtained through Research. If the topic you wish to Research falls under this disclaimer, you will be refunded downtime days as quickly as possible. If you submit Research under the disclaimer too close to the Weekly Update, the days will, unfortunately, be lost.

    Rune Carving

Rune carving downtime will be added to Living Erenel once the appropriate Chronicle Adventure is completed during Season 3.

    Sell Magic Item

Selling magic items is no easy task with thieves, high transaction values, and the difficulty of finding a legitimate buyer. After accessing the risk, you can sell a magical item in your inventory to potential buyers. All magic items sell at 1 /4 their value rounded down with differing downtime days required, based on the rarity shown in the table below. Legendary magic items cannot be sold with downtime days.   When attempting to sell a magic item, you can choose to roll a Persuasion check, representing negotiations. On a success, you sell the individual item at 1/3 value rounded down. Be warned, this check adds risk! If your Persuasion result is less than 5, downtime days are lost, and the item is unsold.   When spending downtime days, the downtime days spent reduces the total number of required downtime days. This allows you to spread the word and market your sale over multiple weeks. When posting about selling magic items in #downtime, including the number of completed days for reference in this format.   Example: (player name) is selling (magic item) totaling (completed days)/(total days needed)   Note: It is meant to be far more rewarding to sell items between players in the Discord marketplace. Selling magic items with downtime is a way for quick GP while unloading unwanted items. Not a means for crafters to sell magic items at profit to a NPC. The costs above should help act as a "floor" for any negotiations.
    Rarity Downtime Days
    Common 1
    Uncommon 2
    Rare 8
    Very Rare 12

    Shop

Travel to a merchant ward in a capital city to buy or sell non-magical items. Spend one downtime day to purchase anything on the mundane items and adventuring gear list in the Players Handbook at cost.   You can sell any non-magical items in your inventory to shopkeeps at 1/2 value rounded down, up to 2,500 GP total in one downtime day. This is to promote player to player selling in the #marketplace!

    Training

Given enough free time and the services of an instructor, a player can learn a wide range of enhancing abilities. If you drop the training for your current choice before it is complete in favor of another choice, all gold spent is lost, and you will need to start at the beginning when returning to the previous choice.   When spending downtime days, the downtime days spent reduces the total number of required downtime days, allowing you to train over multiple weeks. When posting about training in the #downtime Discord Channel, include the number of completed days for reference in this format.
Example: (Player name) is training (training service) totaling (completed days) / (total days needed)

    Marketplace

In the #marketplace Discord channel, players may buy, sell, and trade wares with one another. In the marketplace, you can post role play discussions such as buyers requests, what you would like to sell, or what trades you are interested in pursuing.   The following ruleset is in place while using the #marketplace. Failure to adhere to the rules or attempting to cheat on your character sheet can result in your removal from Living Erenel.
    • While bartering, do not delete your post regardless of the deal going through or not. Logs are kept and updated.
    • Do not spam. This is not a MMO trade chat.
    • Follow the Roleplaying Best Practices Ruleset and Prohibited Roleplay Conduct.
    • Once a deal is made, the deal is not finalized until it has been posted and approved in the #p2p-transactions Discord channel. You may not add or subtract inventory until moderator approval. More information below.

    Player to Player Transactions

Once a transaction is agreed upon by players, a player will initiate the approval process by posting in the #p2p-transactions Discord channel. It is up to the players who will initiate the process.   To do so, one player will post the agreed-upon deal. After the initial post, all other included players will confirm the deal with a confirmation post.   Once an Erenel moderator sees and confirms the trade, they will post and tag all players involved. Players may then deduct and/or add items on their character sheet in terms of the deal. A moderator will most likely be watching character sheets during this time or will check in to verify shortly after.

    Transaction Example
Player 1: I am buying a Potion of Healing from @Player2 for 45 gp.
    Player 2: Confirmed @Player1
    Moderator: @Player 1 @Player 2 Approved – please adjust your inventories.
