Father Darius Brenmore

The Tale of Father Brenmore the Dutiful

The Battle of the Deadwoods took many. It was one of the few battles during the Dominion's expansion that did not have the full support of the people or the soldiers fighting it. By this point, King Amun the Conquerer had waylaid the Elves to the south and the dwarves were on the retreat. The soldiers had felt like the year-long war was finally coming to an end. They imagined seeing their families again, but too soon. In a moment of overconfident ambition, the King or maybe his generals gave the order to chase the mountain men into the forest. Every decision up to this point had a reason behind it. Take a hill and the mill which was built there would aid the soldiers with food. Defend a bridge to block supply lines to the enemy. This order, however, had no tactical reason anyone could make out and the soldiers made it known. Sadly, as such things usually go, soldiers must take orders without question, and several thousand men paid the ultimate price for that reality. Because of this, the battle lasted for two weeks. Blood from both sides coated the grassy fields surrounding the Deadwoods.
At the time he was known only as Darius Brenmore, a recruit, and like many, required to serve in Shahar's 'time of need'. By the end of the second week, he had already seen half of his company killed by the fleeing dwarves, the other half slaughtered by the beasts of the Deadwoods. He was trapped in an abandoned den with what may have been the last four men in his company. Dwarven berserkers covered the exit and only the gods knew what denizens lurked further down. He and his men were trapped. Brenmore admitted later in his life that he had never been a pious man. His mother inherited her faith in Jeeran from her father, a soldier, and a devout follower of the Defender. He remembered whenever his brother and he would go out to play, his mother would plead the shield of Jeeran on them and pray for their protection. It was a small gesture, one that showed how much she cared for her children as any mother would, but it stayed with Darius long after she passed away. Trapped in that cave, with rushing berserkers and bloodthirsty hounds snapping at their heels, Darius Brenmore kneeled down, beset on all sides by enemies, and prayed.
There are many accounts of what happened in that cave. From the outside, soldiers reported seeing a golden beacon shine down from the sky. Something launched from the clouds and struck the top of cave scattering dust all around. When it cleared, the battle flag of Jeeran the Defender waved in the air and five men exited the cave. One of them wore full plate armor, a stark contrast from the hard leathers of his comrades. Soldiers reported feeling their despair fade away replaced by a fervor for battle they had long lost. Darius Brenmore, the man who would become one of Jeeran's most faithful followers, wielding a burning sword, chased the dwarves back into the mountains with 500 men at his side.
