The basic premise was what if the mythological creatures we know so well actually did exist. How would that change the development of culture? What do armies and war look like when you have legions of griffin riders? How do cities form when behemoths can wade through your city? How do leviathan effect sea travel? I also wanted to avoid some tropes I have seen to often in other fantasy. Such as the previous fallen civilization from which the people get old world technology/magic and adhering to strictly to medical conventions in worlds were those would not have developed. I thought it would be interesting to see kingdoms on the rise forging their cultural identity. I have written several short stories set in the world and it is mostly for fun.
