The Glittering Lake

The Halflings of Eraterna have many tales for a lot of things in their society. Gods, heroes, and much else are spoken of in these stories, but none seem quite as tangible as the tale of the Glittering Lake. As the story goes, long ago during the Great Dragon and Giant war, the Metallic Dragons had to retreat through the ancient Halfling lands. It is said that the Dragons were carrying much of their vast wealth with them, but with the Chromatic horde hot on their tails, they had to stow their loot in a secret place. Halflings, typically, care very little for great riches, their wants lie in good food, drink, and otherworldly pleasures. With their unwavering kindness, the Halfling ancestors offered to allow the Dragons to hide their menagerie of valuable objects underneath the lake at the center of town until the time came that the Dragons could come back and retrieve it. The war waged on and the Chromatics passed through with very little notice of the Half-Men. When the war ended, the Halflings offered to help the Chromatics retrieve their riches, but their focus was more on rebuilding their lost homes. So there it sat. All of the Halflings that made the original deal passed away, and the story of the riches passed on between Halfling generations, growing and mutating. Some said that there was a weapon below that would have ended the war if the Metallics weren't pushed out, others believe that the riches surpass all that the vaults and banks in Eraterna. Many believe that the Metallic Dragons had already taken their horde from the lake. The Metallic Dragons have since rebuilt their magnificent cities, creating new ones across the lands, lending more evidence to the theory that the treasure has been taken back. If the treasure is still there, in their great restructure, the Dragons seem to have forgotten about the treasure hidden so long ago. Some more ambitious Halflings have tried to set up excavations of the lake, but it's very hard to get a group of their kin to worry about such silly things as gold and gems. Whether the treasure is there, or long lost to history, the stories ever abound about the Glittering Lake and why it always seems to have a little glint under the surface.
