Magical Consuption

Magicis consummatio, more commonly known as magical consumption, is a very rare yet devastating disease that can affect magic users throughout the world of Eraterna. It is thought to be caused by ingesting animals with the same disease present in their body. A magic-user infected with magical consumption will see no outward symptoms other than the inability to cast any magic. While there is empirical evidence that magic can be bestowed upon individuals by deities, genetics, study, and many other means, this disease affects all magic users the same. There has been no verified proof of a cure for this disease, though the surgeons of Nohola have stated that they have cured some individuals by precise surgery on the brain of those affected. It is said that they remove a mass of tissue that is believed to block the magical powers and once the patient recovers from the surgery, they have been able to perform magic again. The disease is uncommon, infecting only a few humanoids a year, but it is still a sickness that worries some magic users and its cure has become a priority for many who practice medicine.

Rumors of a form of brain surgery have been spread. The surgery has been performed by the healers of Nohola and they have claimed that those who undergo the procedure make a full recovery and can use magic in the same capacity that they could before.

Affected Groups

The only know individuals affected by the disease seem to be humanoids. There are certain types of animals, Bovidae (cattle), certain crustaceans, that carry the disease, but they are not physically affected by the effects of the disease. Little is known about the reach of the disease because the only people that see any effects by it are the rare magic users that contract it.
