Among the many intelligent races in the galaxy, each was given the same root language at their creation. This is the language of the Eternals.
Speaking
Every race found in the galaxy, no matter how remote or isolated, will understand the same spoken language. Most races are also able to speak this language, though there are sufficiently bizarre creatures who do not possess the physiology to do so. For them, they usually find other means to speak the words of this language, with some even using a form of telepathy to do so.
In the case of the Wendigo, they can take possession of an individual of another race to use as a mouthpiece. And in the case of the Alcora, they have a translation device built into their environment suits that produces words of the common language, translated from the clicks and warbles the Alcora are able to produce.
Writing
Written language is another matter, as no race was given a written standard. As such, each race in the galaxy has come up with their own lexicons and format of text. This makes for some difficulty when one race finds the writings of another in an abandoned or ancient location. Men write with a familiar alphabet-based set of words, where Arkadians use glyphs and pictograms that are hard for Men to read. Every race's writings are unique, though once learned, the words are the same as the reader is already used to.
Evolution of Language
Various races have come up with new words for new things that never existed before. These new words will be unique to the race that made them and not understood by other races until they are shared and accepted.
