thermohaline circulation

condensation of water in warm region, increased salinity. Ocean water is blown across the ocean by the gulf stream exchanging heat to air. in the northern part this process gets colder, the salinated (salty) water density increases and 'sinks'. more north the water freezes and leaves the salt behind in the unfrozen water, increasing salinity.
