Spirit Realm

The Spirit Realm is a realm of fulfilment, a home for the souls of those who died without regret. Unlike the Chaos Planes, it is more akin to a mirror - a parallel version of the physical world, invisible to ordinary life. Neither realm can interact with each other, save for a select few scenarios.   When a living or unliving thing dies and the soul has expunged all the Willpower to keep it going, it will fade into the Spirit Realm and the owner of the soul will return to the form they once took during their life. They are free spirits, unbound by what is physical and what is not, they may go wherever and whenever they wish, meeting and talking to other spirits if they desire. They can see the physical world through cyan mist, yet they cannot touch it.   Spirits are unaffected by time and never age, their memories never fade and the knowledge they gain will constantly grow. Due to this, they can become the wisest beings in the world. Folk have wished to speak to them since the very beginning of civilisation, and have made artifacts such as the Dead Ringer to drag them out of their Realm enough to interact. The Spirit Realm is an unseen ocean, the physical world lies above while in shallow depths there roam lost souls and vagrant spirits. The deeper in, the harder it is for people - even those with the arcane eye - to see.   In most cases, folk proficient and familiar with their magic can see into the shallow depths of the Realm. The average folk consider this "having the arcane eye", a term coined by Ilmia, a well-known Tethic researcher on magic and soul, who had written his finding down in many books transcribed throughout the ages and spread across the western dominions.   Not all who become a spirit truly sink into the Realm, for those that still remain vengeful or unfulfilled as their soul expunges will instead transmute into a different form of ghost, fueled by their resentment or sadness. They go by many names, ghouls, poltergeists, wraiths, and all drift in the shallow depths of the Realm. Because of this, they can interact with the physical world, and the physical world to it. What happens to the vengeful upon their final death remains uncertain, it is assumed they persist, if only deeper within the Spirit Realm. What is known, is that the only way to let their spirits rest is to give them gratification - only then will they be free spirits. It is believed by the spirits that if they were to discover something that may undo their feelings of satisfaction, they may become vengeful and return to the shallow depths as a wraith. This belief has reinforced their commitment to positive emotions in fear of becoming what is undesired.

Lost Souls & Vagrant Spirits

by Halmska
When a living thing dies, its soul leaves the body, becoming lost. They search around the world to look for corpses to infuse with. They roam catacombs and graveyards to find the right vessel. During this pilgrimage, they're still connected to the physical world, meaning some proficient enough in magic may see them fade in and out of the Spirit Realm, for they drift in the shallow depths.   The size of the lost souls depends on the original individual’s strength and emotion, the stronger the Will of the being, the bigger the soul. Once a soul leaves the body, they cannot infuse with it again. When the soul has found a worthy vessel, it fuses with it. On most occasions, a Skeleton will be created. However, if the soul is strong enough, it will form pale-brown flesh on the skeleton, creating a Fallen. When the Undead dies, the soul either dissipates into the Spirit Realm or escapes the body once again in a weaker state than prior, restarting the cycle.   If a lost soul wanders too long without a physical vessel for the Core to encompass, they can morph form and seep out of the spirit realm and become vagrant spirits - now slightly visible even to the naked eye.

Dead Ringer

An artifact of Kol Duluramodul in Tethuram, constructed in Iful's Capital to be the form of a bell. Ringing it near a corpse will force their spirit back to their location while tugging them out of the Spirit Realm slightly, allowing the living world to see and speak to them. Originally, its purpose was for gaining knowledge of the past, but overtime was used for more personal reasons - such as letting the dead talk to their family and friends.
