Revathon

A sea of buildings that crawl for miles beyond sight;
The crowds of people, dreaming, living;
The city stands tall, yet sags under its own weight;
Its crown a shining beacon, the shadows long beneath it;
For centuries long past, and those yet to come;
Revathon
- Revathon, by Quincy Alabaster

Government

While the royal family of Alinné owns and rules the city in name, they have done little in the way of governance for centuries, hardly ever venturing past Wall Ivory. The true governance then fell to the lesser nobles of Wall Day, who in turn delegated the task to the "mayors" of each district of Wall . These mayors are selected through whatever process the district has implemented, but the lesser noble in charge of that specific district may influence those processes to get their favored mayor in position. The rate of interference depends on the district and what noble family is in charge, as some are more involved than others. Each mayor, and therefore district, is then, within limits, allowed to run their districts as they wish. For some, as long as money rolls in they may have a longer leash, a few may merely be a mouthpiece for their noble patron; this leads to a large disparity in how each district is run, essentially making Revathon a collection of independent cities rather than one whole.

Industry & Trade

Revathon imports almost everything. Food, clothing, building supplies, etc. With the population as high as it is, the surrounding farmland is not enough to sustain them, and thus must import nearly everything. The only reasons the city can support its own citizens through imports is because of Revathon's strategic location, which is between multiple trade routes; the tolls it then enacts on merchants; its history and magnificence, which attracts multitudes of tourists and other travelers; and then the multitude of services, shops, and rarities that can only be found in Revathon. Together, these aspects of the city keep it thriving despite the heavy cost of its population.

History

Revathon as a city shares a close tie with magic, even more so than the nation of Illkana. When magic first appeared around 4000 years ago, the early mages were still exploring and struggling with what would be considered novice spells today. The progress of knowledge was slow, until about 200-300 years later, when a woman, Quinn Alinné, burst onto the scene. A genius never seen before or since, she changed the landscape of what could be done with magic. Quinn quickly became the most powerful mage in the world, and with her power people flocked to her. Quinn and her followers dived deep into the mysteries of magic, only to find that the deeper you go, the easier it is to lose yourself. When some of her underlings started going mad, Quinn made an executive decision. She sent an announcement to all who would hear that she would be hosting a tournament, where she would take on new students from amongst the promising participants. Quinn monitored her current students, and those in the tournament, and only selected those she felt had what it took to truly learn magic. She took those select few, and built a castle for them to learn, away from those they might harm and tempt, so that they may use what they know to bestow gifts amongst the people. This castle became the seat of the Throne of Revathon, where throughout the years Quinn Alinné's descendants explored further into the depths of magic, and built up the land surrounding the castle, eventually becoming the shining gem that is today's metropolis.
