Purkal, City of Light

Purkal City is the capital of the nation that bears its same name. It is a Chandelier, a word used by the people of Enrin to describe the vast, light-illuminated cities that are so very rare in this world of night. Purkal is the oldest, largest, and strongest Chandelier in the known world, and boasts an extreme amount of wealth, power, and influence. It is the only Chandelier in all of Purkal, acting as the central hub for all commerce and culture in an otherwise dark land. Centers for learning, cultural advancement, housing development, and all other manner of advanced infrastructure exist amidst the soaring towers and winding streets of this booming metropolis.

Demographics

Purkal is wide-ranging in its distribution of wealth. Roughly ten percent of the population control over eighty per-cent of its wealth and resources, while at least twenty per-cent are on or below the poverty line.   Like all of Enrin, Purkal is populated only by humans, though the adaptations that have taken place over the years of night have altered the people beyond what their ancestors might recognize.

Government

Purkal is a totalitarian aristocracy. Ruled by Damok with an iron fist, there is little questioning his judgments, as he holds absolute power over both the military and the economy. That being said, he fully recognizes the need for certain freedoms in order for progress to take place. To this end, the nobility have been allowed to decide where their own wealth takes action, with only a minor guiding hand from Damok when he is either in need of specific assets, or feels a noble needs to have their ego checked.

Defences

The city boasts the tallest towers in the realm, the tallest of which - Damok's Talon - is fitted with a projector which can envelop the city in a protection energy dome for up to three weeks, preventing all entrance or egress. And should a siege find its way into the city itself, a standing army of over 5,000 strong is equipped with sturdy armor and power technological weapons to ensure its citizens' safety.

Industry & Trade

Purkal's primary trade is to do with water and agriculture. Following quickly after this is its academic and cultural centers: nobles from all over the world send their children to the illustrious halls in Purkal to learn.

Infrastructure

The city is mostly towers, all run through with glass bulbs of pale white light. Purkal truly looks a Chandelier turned on its head, the towers to the middle being the highest, with each following skyscraper tapering off until the lowest ones at the edge - these are a mere twelve storeys in height. A function sewer system has kept the city healthy and clean, and its roads are well-maintained and policed. Several academies occupy the cultural center of the city, teaching all manner of subjects in the realms of science, history, language, military, agriculture, and religion.

History

Purkal was found several hundred years ago when the Day first disappeared. At first a small gathering of like-minded individuals bent on survival, they quickly realized that if they mastered the use of the land's water resource and its subsequent ability to maintain edible fungi, they as a people would be able to prosper. Since that time, all energy has been dedicated to agricultural pursuit, though recently the greater minds have been turned to work on Damok's new technology...   The nation had for many decades been a peaceful one, but as it grew so did its division in thought. Tensions rose to a point that a small scale civil war broke out, one that only ended when a savvy military leader took power and enforced martial law across the nation. Since that time Purkal has remained a totalitarian state, though tensions have once again begun to rise. Damok, knowing he must act or lose power, has begun experiments with those possessing the rare trait known as the Flash to creating a unqiue and terrifying weapon that might ensure power never slips from his grip. Unfortunately for him, some few amidst his researchers have picked up on his designs and are working to put them to a different use...

Architecture

The buildings are all built of metal and glass, each a wonder of unique architecture. Every building is bound up in various sources that emit pale white light.
