Retrieve Information

Retrieve Information
School: Divination
Level: Sor/Wiz 2, Grey Elf 1
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close
Area: 1 5' cube per 2 levels
Targets: Objects within area
Duration: 1 hour per 2 levels
Saving Throw: None or will negates (object)
Spell Resistance: No   Description: You can view still existing information (text, images, diagrams, etc.) on objects within the area that you can see, regardless of the quality of the writing or state of the medium. You can read very sloppy handwriting, moderately water-damaged books, scrolls that are ripped to shreds, stone tablets that have worn with time or fallen face down, a letter someone else is reading and is faced so that you can't see the front, ink that has been smudged or crossed out, a closed book under a clear glass display case, scrolls that are too old to open without crumbling, and other similar objects as if they were brand new, written clearly, facing you, intact, and so on. This spell does not allow you to read information that has been destroyed or that is on pieces not within the spell's area. Nor does it confer any additional ability to understand what the information means (text in an unknown language is still unreadable and diagrams for bizarre mechanisms are still just as confusing.) You do not need to hold the object in your hand, but you must stay sufficiently close to it to be able to read it and at least one side of the object must be illuminated well enough for you to read. Information on objects in another creature's possession receive a will save to remain unviewable by this spell. Magical symbols that activate when read only activate if the symbol is still whole or the magic is otherwise still intact. Reading in this way takes the usual amount of time.
Retrieve Information, Greater
School: Divination
Level: Sor/Wiz 4, Grey Elf 3
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close
Area: 1 5' cube per level
Targets: Objects within area
Duration: 1 hour per level
Saving Throw: None or will negates (object)
Spell Resistance: No   Description: This spell functions as lesser retrieve information, except as noted above and that you can read information that has been completely destroyed or that you can't see. You can read books that have been burnt to ash, scrolls fully dissolved in acid, waterlogged paper crumbled to mush, stone tablets that have crumbled to dust, books that are closed and in a locked, completely dark chest behind a closed closet door, and similar objects. So long as you are within close range of an affected object, you can call an image of it to your mind and read it as if it were right in front of you under the same lighting conditions you are under. Additionally, you are treated as being under the effect of the spells read magic, detect magic, and comprehend languages, for the purpose of viewing information on affected objects for the duration of this spell. Information on objects in another creature's possession receive a will save to remain unreadable with this casting of this spell. This spell may be cast through walls, but is blocked by 3 feet of wood or dirt, 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, or a thin sheet of lead. It does not discern anything other than information mediums (it will not detect creatures, type of terrain, room layout, etc,) through walls, but the caster may infer such things if, for example, she sees a tattoo moving back and forth or the pages of a book turning.
