Vermoeder

The ugly Vermoeder is a strange sort of animal that can solely be found on Eilan, the desolate island in the which never managed to sustain a human settlement for more than a few decades at a time.
Aside from a few types of birds - which just so happen to be their main source of food - this is the only living creature able to call this island its permanent home.

Physiology

When encountered in its natural habitat, the Vermoeder looks like much of a formless blob, usually hiding behind what little vegetation the island offers. This is because it has no eyes, and its mouth is covered by flaps of its grey-ish skin, just like the rest of its hideous body. The reason for it being so saggy is that it functions much like a spring: It pulls back fully while lying in wait for prey, and once the vibrations caused by a bird's flapping wings become strong enough, it suddenly jumps towards it, attempting to capture it in its huge, nightmarish mouth, swallowing it whole and starting to dissolve it inside of its body, as it lacks any sort of teeth.

Danger to Humanoids

While these nightmarish fiends sound like a sure death sentence for the foolhardy explorer braving the island, the short time in which a settlement was established there proved them to be quite harmless. This is thanks to the fact that it is almost impossible to trigger their spring as a human, unless moving very quickly and thereby emulating a small bird's wing beat.
Another fact playing into this is their lack of teeth, so even if it jumps a humanoid unless it somehow perfectly manages to latch onto the head, the victim will be far too large to actually reach down into its belly to be digested, and their jaws are weak enough to be unable to hold onto anything. Needless to say, this is still a severely unpleasant and gross experience.
