Juril and Balaneus

The conflict between Juril and Balaneus tells the tale of how Juril, along with six other slaves of Balaneus, rose up to defeat him and free mortals and time from his control. The story is well-known to virtually everyone in Fao, taught from birth and told until death.

Summary

Balaneus had complete control over Fao and its peoples for all of time. One of these slaves, Juril, decided to rise up against the tyrant's control and, along with six other slaves with similar passions met along the way, Juril confronted Balaneus in his domain. They all fought before Balaneus was vanquished, with Juril landing the killing blow. Balaneus' power was taken from his corpse and given to each of Juril's allies. This elevated them to Godhood as Faoilist Gods. Juril, however, disappeared, rumored to appear once more when trouble appears.

Historical Basis

Though the legend of Juril and Balaneus is rumored to have started the flow of time, there exists no evidence, other than the account of the Faoilist Gods, to provide authenticity. Ruined structures and objects dated before year 0 do exist, but these can be explained as being made while Balaneus ruled, the Timeless Era.

Spread

Juril and Balaneus can be learned simply by asking any citizen walking down the street. Almost every citizen knows it by heart, learned in their earliest days of childhood.

Variations & Mutation

Various retellings of Juril and Balaneus are almost uniform with one another, with the only exception being Juril. Some regard Juril as male and others as female, and there is no confirmation on Juril's race either. Only Juril's feats are known. All else about Juril is merely speculation.

In Art

Several stained glass windows in temples, songs in taverns, and topiaries in gardens portray Julian slaying Balaneus. In Fao, it's more difficult to go a day without seeing something of the stories.
