Lythaelos, Dragon of Fate Myth in Emaxus | World Anvil
Emaxus is currently undergoing a large entry into a new Age (and a large revision of the current Age). Consider this an active construction zone: things are moving around, getting changed, and the world's being reorganized. Apologies for the inconvenience!

Lythaelos, Dragon of Fate

"Fate is a paradox: all creatures have one, yet not all creatures abide by it. To know it is to dread it, yet to not know it, is to fear it. I see its skein and make sense of it all."

God of the sky, dragons, dreams, and fate, Lythaelos is the wisest of all the gods and patron of oracles and soothsayers. It is believed that they have the ability to peer into the vast and infinite futures of the multiverse. Indeed, some believe Lythaelos was the one who warned the Children of Yamma of the Obsidian Lords return, and it is because of them that the Reckoning was a bloody stalemate instead of a brutal slaughter.   Whether or not that is true, followers of Lythaelos petition them for foresight and for aid in divination, hoping to glean some of their divine insight.

Depictions, Symbols, and Names

Lythaelos' depictions vary depending on the culture. Those in Yathra Silthame portray Lythaelos as a dragon of unbelievable scale, with grey skin riddled by massive sapphires and blue rocks, greatest of the rare sapphire dragons. These are believed to be true, as some even predate the Reckoning, but it doesn't stop other cultures from having different depictions. For example, many Imperial cultures show Lythaelos as a beautiful dragon of gold with wings large enough to darken the sky.   Lythaelos' symbol is the draconic twist of fate, representing destiny's skein and Lythaelos' view of it all, looking in four directions at once. Simpler renditions of this symbol will sometimes simply be a complex knot, representing all the different threads of fate and their connections.   Lythaelos is known as Lythaelos, the Dragon of Fate, the Wise Dragon, Dragon of Dragons, and Dreamspeaker. They are called Feitou~ībā (Fateweaver) in the Taesu Empire and the Xuzou Dynasty, and dragons refer to them as Il Elthrex Aal (The First One).

Ancient Home

Ipacia was the plane that Lythaelos made their lair. They created a great island that floated across the Sea of Stars, a safe haven where they rested within a giant basin of sapphire. Here a great number of their brood worked with them and defended them. Today, the gems lay dark and an egg lies in the center, where Lythaelos' god-spirit rests.

Worship Distribution

Lythaelos is one of the least worshipped Children of Yamma. Outside of the largest cities, most people aren't concerned with their fates; they're more worried about their survival and family/community; however, most towns have their soothsayers, rural diviners who claim to hear Lythaelos' call.    Centers of Lythaelos' worship tend to be those places with large temples devoted to oracular visions and divination. Some cities have entire orders of people who spend their entire lives petitioning Lythaelos for visions and omens of the future.

Champions of Lythaelos

Champions of Lythaelos are known as Oracles of Fate, and are named during or before times of great struggle and strife. None have been named during the Age of Extant, and some believe this is because Lythaelos' divination abilities were greatly reduced after the Reckoning -- or that there has been no threat justifying an Oracle's naming. Known Oracles of Fate are as follows:
  • Sarryth was an Oracle of Fate during the Reckoning. He led the armies that would settle Drakkina, and created a relic known as the Helm of Fates.
  • Catrain Darkdraft, who divined in the Age of Rebirth. Believed to have seen a great plague before its arrival, which helped stop it early.

Divine Domains

Lythaelos is god of the sky, dragons, dreams, and fate, so Clerics who serve them tend to fall within the Domains of Dream, Fate, and Knowledge. Paladins of Lythaelos swear Oaths of Awakening and Devotion.

COMMANDMENTS OF LYTHAELOS

  • Let nothing deter you from your fate. Destiny is all.
  • Underestimate not the omens in your dreams. The realm of sleep is a reflection of reality, not a mockery.
  • Every destiny, no matter how small, can impact the skein of fate. Never lay yourself low.

Methods of Worship

Lythaelos has daily prayers devoted to them, and much more complex rituals for trying to divine destiny and the future.   Daily prayers to Lythaelos often involve a simple petition someone makes to ask Lythaelos to guide them to their true destiny, and to keep them on their path.   Rituals of divination vary greatly based on what the oracle or soothsayer is trying to divine, and can have variations based on culture, location, and even the time of year or day of the month. They all, however, focus around connecting with Lythaelos and their position as the Dragon of Fate. The oracle speaks in draconic and tries to contact Lythaelos' god-spirit, using prayers, sacrifices, and other sacraments to establish a connection.

Holy Day

Lythaelos' holy day is known as Prophecy's Time, and takes place on Uldreyin 25, Kendreth. It is a day of reflection, recollection, and divination, in which oracles, sages, and soothsayers attempt to glean omens and signs from the Dragon of Fate. Even ordinary people take the day to think on their lives and what they wish for in their futures, and sometimes come out of the holy day with new feelings and opinions on their circumstances and even their destinies. Some believe tarot cards made on Prophecy's Time are true tellers of fate, but this is entirely unsubstantiated.

Ancient Foes and Allies

Laaelum hated Lythaelos and she and her followers believed the ideas of fate and destiny were horrible misinterpretations of the threads of creation. Lythaelos' followers are vigilant against mages bearing Laaelum's corruption, and aids Alindr's followers in watching out for her dark magics.   Most dragons hold Lythaelos in a position of begrudging respect at worst and outright devotion at best. They know that they wouldn't exist without Lythaelos' intervention, and respect them accordingly; however, some dragons outright hate Lythaelos, either because of their own selfish reasons or as part of a greater organization.
